1. Apple Watch Series 12: best everyday smartwatch for iPhone
WIRED names the Apple Watch Series 12 the best everyday smartwatch for most iPhone owners. It comes in 42mm and 46mm cases and runs for up to 24 hours, or as long as 38 hours in Low Power Mode. That is enough for a full day, but most users should expect to charge it daily.

Health and safety features
Series 12 combines ECG readings with hypertension notifications, sleep-apnea notifications and recovery-focused heart-rate-variability (HRV) tracking. Siri AI and Audio Intelligence add voice and audio-processing features that are not present on every lower-cost model.
Who should buy it
- iPhone owners who want the broadest everyday health and notification experience.
- People who value recovery and cardiac trend data more than multi-day battery life.
- Users comfortable charging every night or using Low Power Mode when necessary.
2. Apple Watch Ultra 4: best rugged Apple option
At a $799 list price, Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the premium Apple choice for hiking, endurance training and demanding outdoor use. Its rated battery life reaches up to 50 hours per charge, substantially longer than Series 12 or SE 3, although actual endurance varies with GPS, cellular use, display settings and workouts.

Ultra 4 provides continuous heart-rate and HRV tracking, a Readiness Score and Health Age. Those features make it more useful for athletes who plan training around recovery rather than simply recording workouts.
Trade-offs
The larger, more rugged design and higher price make it excessive for basic notifications, sleep tracking and occasional exercise. It remains an iPhone-only watch, so Android users should consider Pixel Watch 5 or Galaxy Watch9 instead.
3. Apple Watch SE 3: best value for iPhone users
Apple Watch SE 3 starts at $249 MSRP and runs watchOS 26 on Apple’s S10 chip. It offers 50-meter water resistance and an always-on display, with an 18-hour battery rating.
What you get
Tom’s Guide reports Sleep Score and Workout Buddy features alongside the always-on screen. The lower price makes SE 3 a practical first smartwatch, a family watch or a replacement for an older Apple Watch.

Some Apple Intelligence features require a newer iPhone, so check your phone model before buying. The 18-hour rating also means daily charging is part of ownership, and buyers seeking advanced cardiac or recovery functions should move up to Series 12 or Ultra 4.
4. Google Pixel Watch 5: best polished Android smartwatch
Google’s Pixel Watch 5 is the most polished Wear OS smartwatch according to WIRED. Google lists a $399.99 starting price, Android 12-or-newer compatibility and two sizes: a 41mm model with a 332mAh battery and a 45mm model with a 465mAh battery.
Battery, charging and navigation
With the always-on display enabled, Google rates the 41mm version for up to 30 hours and the 45mm version for up to 40 hours. Pixel Watch 5 also supports fast charging and dual-band GPS, useful for city routes and challenging environments where a single GPS band can struggle.

Health, repair and emergency features
WIRED found its health and fitness tracking accurate and highlights a repairable construction. The cellular version adds satellite emergency messaging, giving it a safety advantage for users who travel beyond reliable mobile coverage. Availability of emergency and satellite functions can vary by country, carrier and software rollout.

Compatibility check
Pixel Watch 5 requires an Android phone running version 12 or newer and is not an option for iPhone owners. It is the most straightforward pick when you want Google’s software design without committing to a Samsung phone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Samsung Galaxy Watch9: best for Samsung-phone health integration
Galaxy Watch9 is the strongest choice for Samsung phone owners who want the watch and phone to share health features. WIRED reports reliable heart-rate and sleep tracking, dual-frequency GPS and automatic workout detection.
Health platform
Samsung’s Vitals dashboard, sleep-apnea detection and Daily Cardio Load turn individual readings into longer-term trends. Gemini provides an AI assistant on the watch. Samsung says the 40mm model has a 390mAh battery, 20% larger than the comparable Galaxy Watch8 and 30% larger than Galaxy Watch7 and Watch6. WIRED observed about 25 hours with the always-on display.
Samsung-only limitations
ECG and sleep-apnea functions are limited to Samsung phones. Other Android owners can use compatible Galaxy Watch9 functions, but should not assume every health feature will activate outside Samsung’s ecosystem. Country approvals, calibration and software availability also affect medical-style features.
How to choose among the five
Start with your phone
- Choose Apple Watch Series 12, Ultra 4 or SE 3 if you use an iPhone.
- Choose Pixel Watch 5 if you use Android 12 or newer and want Google’s interface and broad Android compatibility.
- Choose Galaxy Watch9 if you use a Samsung phone and want Samsung-exclusive ECG and sleep-apnea tools.
Then decide how often you want to charge
- For the longest rated Apple runtime, choose Ultra 4 at up to 50 hours.
- For Android, Pixel Watch 5’s 45mm model has the highest stated runtime at up to 40 hours with always-on display.
- Galaxy Watch9’s roughly 25-hour observed result, Series 12’s 24-hour rating and SE 3’s 18-hour rating all point to daily charging.
Match health features to your needs
- Cardiac and recovery focus: Series 12 adds ECG, hypertension notifications, sleep-apnea notifications and recovery HRV; Ultra 4 adds continuous HRV, Readiness Score and Health Age.
- General Android tracking and safety: Pixel Watch 5 combines accurate tracking, dual-band GPS, repairability and satellite emergency messaging on cellular models.
- Samsung ecosystem trends: Galaxy Watch9 emphasizes Vitals, sleep, Daily Cardio Load and Samsung-phone health integration.
These functions are wellness and monitoring tools, not a substitute for medical diagnosis. Regulatory approval, phone compatibility, calibration and software rollout can change what is available in a particular country.
Battery, GPS and durability trade-offs
Battery numbers are not directly equivalent: Apple and Google publish rated durations under stated conditions, while the Galaxy Watch9 figure comes from WIRED’s always-on use. GPS, cellular connections, sleep tracking and high screen brightness can shorten any watch’s runtime.
For outdoor users, Ultra 4 is the premium Apple option. Samsung’s separate Galaxy Watch Ultra2 comparison model has an 800mAh battery and 100-meter depth capability, but it is not one of the five core picks here. Galaxy Watch9 instead targets everyday health and fitness use with dual-frequency GPS.
