Apple has not announced smart glasses. Current reporting describes a possible first-generation product as displayless, closely paired with an iPhone, and designed for audio, AI assistance and visual tasks; late 2027 is a reported target, not a confirmed release date.
The closest current comparison is Meta’s displayless Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, announced in September 2026. Meta also offers a camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio option. Apple’s product details remain rumors, so there is no confirmed Apple price, battery life, availability or final camera configuration.

Earlier reports suggested earlier possible dates, which is a reminder that development timelines can change. Apple has not announced a product, keynote appearance, retail date or preorder. Treat late 2027 as a rumor, not a deadline.
What Apple is reportedly building
Current reporting describes ordinary-looking, displayless glasses that would pair closely with an iPhone. Reported features include cameras, microphones, speakers, an indicator light, touch and voice controls, Siri, audio, directions, photo and video capture, live translation, and AI-based descriptions or identification of things in view. These are reported possibilities, not confirmed specifications.
MacRumors’ August 6, 2026 guide says Apple is testing at least four frame designs, including large and slim rectangular styles and oval or circular options. It also reports that Apple is exploring acetate frames and multiple colors. No final frames, materials, weight, lens options or prescription support have been confirmed.
Reporting also suggests a custom chip based on Apple Watch technology and iPhone dependence for some functions. Buyers should not assume the glasses will work as a standalone computer.

Will Apple glasses have a screen?
The reported first generation is not expected to include augmented-reality display capability. That means it should not be confused with a headset or glasses that overlay digital content in the wearer’s view. A later display-equipped Apple product has been described as a possibility for 2028 or 2029, but that too remains unconfirmed reporting.
Without a display, information would likely be delivered through audio or a paired phone rather than maps, messages or captions shown in a lens. The tradeoff may be a more conventional form factor, but Apple has not published design or performance details.
What will Apple glasses do?
Reported use cases include listening to audio, getting directions, taking photos and video, and asking an AI assistant about what the wearer sees. Live translation and AI descriptions or identification are also mentioned in reporting. Apple has not confirmed a feature list or said which tasks would run on the glasses, iPhone or cloud.
Because the reported first generation is displayless, do not assume it will show navigation, text or notifications in the lens. Nor should you treat a reported feature as a promise that it will be available at launch.

Privacy and recording concerns
Camera-equipped glasses raise questions about when recording or sensing occurs, how people nearby are informed, and how captured information is processed. Meta says Gen 3 has an indicator LED to alert people nearby when photos or video are being recorded. An indicator can signal recording, but it does not by itself establish consent or settle local rules.
The Associated Press reported on October 5, 2026 that Norway’s government was proposing a temporary ban on AI glasses in some places. AP also reported that a Dutch eyewear retailer had suspended sales of Ray-Ban Meta glasses and described a California bill concerning recording people without permission in private places that was vetoed. These are specific proposals and actions, not a universal ban or a settled legal rule.
AP quoted Meta’s published guidance: “Respect people’s preferences. Not everyone loves being photographed. Stop recording if anyone expresses that they would rather you not.” Follow local laws and the expectations of the people around you; an indicator light is not consent.
Meta Engineering describes Private Processing as confidential computing for some cloud AI workloads and says the approach is intended to prevent Meta from accessing user data during processing. That is Meta’s description of its system, not an independent audit finding or proof that every glasses interaction is processed privately.
