Some iPhone and Apple Watch owners have reported unusually high battery use attributed to Wallet, sometimes on both devices. The pattern is credible, but Apple has not identified Wallet as a universal battery bug or confirmed one cause. Use Battery settings and controlled, reversible tests to determine whether Wallet, a paired Watch, or something else is responsible before removing payment cards or resetting a device.
Is Wallet actually causing the battery drain?
A Wallet percentage in Battery settings is a share of the battery usage during the selected period, not necessarily the same share of your iPhone’s total capacity. If your phone lost 40% charge and Wallet accounts for 50% of the reported usage, that could represent roughly 20 percentage points of charge used during that period—not 50% of the phone’s battery.
Check Settings > Battery and compare the 24 Hours and Last 10 Days views. Select Wallet or the relevant activity category, if shown, and look for Background Activity. Apple explains that background work, including location-related activity, can use power while an app is not on screen: Apple’s iPhone battery guidance.
A single high percentage is a clue, not proof of a runaway process. It is more concerning when Wallet repeatedly ranks high despite little use, the phone warms while idle, or charge falls quickly with the screen off. Compare a normal-use day with a high-drain day and save screenshots, dates, device models, and software versions.

What user reports suggest—and what they do not prove
Reports on Apple Support Communities and MacRumors describe Wallet accounting for substantial battery use, in some cases alongside rapid Apple Watch drain. Reports span software generations from iOS 14.5–15 through iOS 16 and iOS 17/watchOS 10 and later, so they establish a recurring user-reported pattern, not a confirmed 2026 defect affecting a particular release. Examples include an Apple Support Community report involving Apple Card Family, reports involving the iPhone and Watch, later reports of Apple Card synchronization concerns, and historical MacRumors discussion.
Several reports connect drain with Apple Card, Apple Card Family, card synchronization, or communication between Wallet on iPhone and Watch. Some users say removing a card or changing the Watch connection helped. These accounts make card synchronization a useful variable to test, but do not establish that Apple Card is necessary, sufficient, or the root cause. Apple’s public battery guidance does not identify Wallet as a general, officially acknowledged battery-drain bug.

Possible explanations, ranked by the reported pattern
- Apple Card or Family sharing synchronization: Repeated reports associate some cases with adding or sharing an Apple Card, transactions, or subscription payments. A synchronization or provisioning problem is plausible, but unconfirmed.
- Wallet–Watch synchronization: Wallet cards are provisioned to the Watch as well as the iPhone. A repeated update or inconsistent state could plausibly lead to background work. Reports of both devices draining, and of improvement after disconnecting the Watch or removing Watch cards, do not prove this mechanism. See Apple Support Community reports.
- Location-enabled passes: Some passes use location or context. This is a possible contributor, but the reports do not show that Wallet location access is a common cause or that disabling Precise Location is a reliable fix.
- Post-update work: Apple says background tasks after an operating-system update can temporarily affect battery life. A short-lived decline immediately after an update may not be a Wallet fault; see iPhone guidance and Apple Watch guidance.
- Another battery or activity issue: Battery aging, weak cellular signal, GPS-heavy workouts, Always On display, other apps, or synchronization unrelated to Wallet can produce similar symptoms.
Try these low-risk checks first
- Document the baseline. In Settings > Battery, record the selected period, Wallet’s usage and any background activity, and the charge lost. Note whether the Watch was connected, which cards or passes were recently added or changed, and when the drain began.
- Allow time after an update. If the problem began just after an iOS or watchOS update, charge both devices overnight and keep them near each other on a reliable connection. Reassess over several days rather than treating the first post-update reading as a diagnosis. Apple says update-related background activity can temporarily affect battery life; its Watch guidance advises allowing several days before reassessing after an update.
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPhone and Watch. A restart is a reasonable reversible test, not a guaranteed cure; reports include cases where it did not help or helped only temporarily.
- Check the Watch connection with a controlled comparison. First keep the iPhone and Watch near each other with Bluetooth available. If drain persists, compare a similar period with the Watch in Airplane Mode or powered off. Apple says a Bluetooth connection to the paired iPhone is generally more efficient for Watch battery use than relying on cellular. Airplane Mode is a diagnostic test, not a practical permanent fix if you need connected Watch features.
- Change one Wallet item at a time. Remove an obsolete pass or a recently added item, then compare usage over a similar period. If Apple Card is involved, you can test by temporarily removing it from one device, provided you can complete any required verification to add it again. Avoid removing every card at once: payment access may be interrupted, and a re-add can require verification. Historical reports associate some severe cases with Apple Card or Family sharing, but removing a card is not a guaranteed fix.
- Review relevant settings if available. Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Wallet, Wallet notifications, Express Mode or Express Transit, and pass-specific options. Menu labels and availability vary by software version, device, country, card issuer, and pass. Change only the setting relevant to a controlled test; disabling location services broadly can affect other functions.
- Install available stable updates. Check for current stable iOS and watchOS updates after confirming your devices are backed up and reviewing release information. Public evidence does not establish a particular 2026 release as a definitive fix for Wallet drain.
Separate Apple Watch battery drain from iPhone Wallet usage
A Watch can have its own battery problem even when the iPhone attributes usage to Wallet. On the Watch, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Maximum Capacity and review Low Power Mode. Also consider whether the drain coincides with weak cellular service, time away from the paired iPhone, GPS-heavy workouts, audio through the built-in speaker, Always On display, or third-party background activity. Apple identifies these kinds of usage and connectivity conditions as factors in Watch battery life: Apple Watch battery guidance.
Apple’s battery-performance page, dated July 28, 2026, describes capacity recalibration only for specified models and software: Series 7 and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) after watchOS 26 or later, and Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra after watchOS 26.6 or later. Those conditions should not be generalized to every Watch model. Details: Apple Watch battery performance and recalibration.

When unpairing the Watch is worth considering
Unpairing and pairing again is a later-stage diagnostic step, not a first response to a high Wallet percentage. It can disrupt setup, require cards to be provisioned again, and take time. Some users report that restoring a backup did not resolve the drain; a clean setup has also been suggested in user discussions, but neither outcome is guaranteed. Before proceeding, use Apple’s current unpairing and setup instructions for your Watch model and software, and confirm your data is backed up or synchronized. If you cannot tolerate losing payment access temporarily, do not use card removal or re-pairing as an initial test.

Contact Apple Support if the iPhone stays warm while idle, charge drops rapidly overnight, Wallet continues to show meaningful background activity after the controlled tests, or both devices remain affected on current stable software. If Watch Battery Health says Battery Needs Service, seek Apple’s assessment; persistent drain alone does not prove the battery needs replacement.

When not to blame Wallet
- Wallet has a high share but total drain is small: The percentage is relative to usage during the selected period, not a direct measure of total capacity lost.
- No Wallet background activity appears: Check other apps, cellular reception, GPS use, display settings, and battery age before changing Wallet.
- The Watch is the only device losing charge: Investigate its signal, workouts, display, and battery health independently.
- The decline began after an update and is brief: Background tasks can temporarily affect battery life, so compare again after several days.
- A restart appears to fix it: Confirm over comparable days; one improved reading does not establish the cause or prove a lasting fix.
