Apple Watch generations are easiest to compare as three branches: the numbered Series line, the lower-cost SE line, and the outdoor-focused Ultra line. As of October 7, 2026, Apple’s comparison page lists Series 12, SE 3, and Ultra 4 as the current branches. Choose by fit, supported features, battery needs, and intended use—not simply by which model number is newest.
The historical sequence below is a practical roadmap, not a fully date-verified release chronology. Apple’s model listings and the cited release milestones establish the order and selected changes, but do not support exact launch dates or full specification histories for every generation.
Apple Watch generations at a glance
| Generation or family | Branch | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch (1st generation) | Original | The original model; distinguish it from Series 1. |
| Series 1 and Series 2 | Numbered Series | Two distinct models in the early numbered line. |
| Series 3 | Numbered Series | Part of the numbered Series history. |
| Series 4 | Numbered Series | ECG support begins with Series 4, subject to eligibility and availability. |
| Series 5 | Numbered Series | Part of the numbered Series history. |
| Series 6 and SE (1st generation) | Series and value | Apple’s SE line provides a lower-cost alternative to the flagship Series models. |
| Series 7 | Numbered Series | A notable display and durability milestone, according to Apple. |
| Series 8 and Ultra (1st generation) | Series and outdoor | The first Ultra established a larger, adventure-focused branch. |
| Series 9, SE (2nd generation), and Ultra 2 | Three branches | Compare each model within its family; names alone do not establish feature eligibility. |
| Series 10 | Numbered Series | Part of the standard Series line. |
| Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 | Three branches | SE 3 was announced in 2025; it remains listed alongside newer branches. |
| Series 12, SE 3, and Ultra 4 | Current branches | Apple’s comparison page lists these as the current families as of October 7, 2026. |
Apple’s model comparison page is the appropriate place to check current model names, available configurations, and feature notes. Apple’s model list is not a complete independently comparable specification history, so verify the exact model before relying on a feature or purchase detail.

Feature and use-case comparison
| Comparison point | What the research supports | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Apple’s lineup has numbered Series, SE, and Ultra branches. | Start by deciding whether you want an everyday flagship, a value model, or an outdoor-focused watch. |
| Health features | ECG is supported on Series 4 and later, excluding SE, and on all Ultra models. Temperature sensing is supported on Series 8 and later, SE 3, and all Ultra models. | Check the specific model and eligibility requirements rather than assuming every generation supports the same functions. |
| Battery | Apple says Ultra 4 can track outdoor workouts for up to 45 hours. | Treat this as Apple’s stated figure for that use case, not a guarantee or a cross-generation test. |
| Fit and materials | Case sizes and materials differ across the families. | Check the exact case size and material and try the watch on when possible. |
| Connectivity and price | Configurations and local prices vary. | Confirm the configuration, carrier compatibility, and local price before buying. |
Every Apple Watch generation in order
Apple Watch (1st generation)
The original Apple Watch is a separate model from Series 1. Apple’s model listings distinguish the first-generation watch from the numbered Series family. Treat it as an early historical model; verify current compatibility and condition before considering one as a purchase.
Series 1 and Series 2
Series 1 and Series 2 are distinct early models, not one generation under two names. Apple’s current model list helps establish their place in the product history, but the research reviewed for this guide does not substantiate a complete specification comparison between them.
Series 3
Series 3 continues the numbered Series line. Check Apple’s model identification information to confirm a used watch’s exact model rather than relying on a seller’s description.
Series 4
Series 4 marks the start of ECG availability in the numbered Series line. Apple says ECG is available on Series 4 and later, except SE models, and on all Ultra models. Availability and eligibility requirements apply.

Series 5
Series 5 is part of the numbered Series history. The reviewed research does not establish a complete specification profile for it, so compare its exact features against Apple’s current model information before buying used.
Series 6 and SE (1st generation)
Series 6 and the first-generation SE represent two branches: the numbered Series and the lower-cost SE line. Do not assume that SE models share every health feature available on a Series model. Check eligibility for each feature against the exact model.
Series 7
Apple described Series 7 as a display and durability milestone. Apple said its display was nearly 20 percent larger than Series 6’s and over 50 percent larger than Series 3’s. Apple also highlighted crack-resistant front crystal, IP6X dust resistance, and WR50 water resistance. These are Apple-published comparisons and claims, not independent cross-generation test results.
Series 8 and the first Apple Watch Ultra
Series 8 continues the standard line, while the first Ultra established Apple’s outdoor-focused branch. Apple announced the first Ultra in 2022 and positioned it for endurance, exploration, and adventure. Apple’s announcement described a 49mm titanium case and an Action button.

Series 9, SE (2nd generation), and Ultra 2
These models span all three branches: standard Series, value SE, and outdoor Ultra. Compare them by the features you need and the exact model, rather than treating them as interchangeable because they share a generation period.
Series 10
Series 10 is part of the standard Series line. Health-feature availability is model-specific; Apple’s stated temperature-sensing support begins with Series 8 and includes Series 10.
Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3
This group includes one model from each branch. SE 3 was announced on September 9, 2025. Its continued appearance in Apple’s current comparison does not mean it launched alongside 2026’s newer Series and Ultra models.
Series 12 and Ultra 4
Apple announced Series 12 and Ultra 4 on September 9, 2026, and its archive says they arrived in stores on September 18, 2026. Apple’s current comparison page lists Series 12, SE 3, and Ultra 4 as the current branches.

Apple describes Ultra 4 as using an S11 chip and a new Health Sensing System. Apple also says Ultra 4 can track outdoor workouts for up to 45 hours. This is an Apple-stated capability for outdoor workout tracking, not a promise of an individual owner’s runtime or a directly comparable figure for every model.
How to choose an Apple Watch
- Choose a family. Consider the numbered Series for everyday use, SE for a value-oriented option, or Ultra for outdoor and endurance needs.
- Check the fit. Compare the exact case size and material, and try the watch on if possible.
- Confirm feature eligibility. Check Apple’s listing for the exact model and the country, age, software, and other requirements relevant to the feature.
- Match battery claims to your use. Note the model and activity behind any stated runtime. Apple’s Ultra 4 figure of up to 45 hours refers to outdoor workout tracking.
- Check configuration and price. Confirm GPS or cellular configuration, local availability, carrier compatibility if relevant, and current local pricing.
- For a used watch, verify its identity and condition. Confirm the model, battery condition, and fit with your iPhone before paying.
Health features: check the exact model
| Feature | Models listed in the research | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| ECG | Series 4 and later, excluding SE; all Ultra models | Apple specifies eligibility and availability limits. The feature is not a substitute for medical care. |
| Temperature sensing | Series 8 and later, SE 3, and all Ultra models | Check Apple’s requirements for the intended use and region. |
| Ultra 4 outdoor workout tracking | Ultra 4 | Apple states up to 45 hours; actual runtime varies. |
Apple’s model and feature listings should be checked at purchase time. A feature’s presence on one generation does not prove it is available on every watch in the same family or region.
