To call emergency services from an Apple Watch, press and hold the side button until the Emergency Call slider appears, then drag it to call immediately. If you keep holding the side button, a countdown ends with an automatic call; to disable that countdown, turn off Hold Side Button to Dial in the paired iPhone’s Watch app. The Emergency Call slider remains available.
Emergency SOS attempts to reach local emergency services and share your location, but whether a call connects depends on the watch, its connection, carrier, and region. Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts in advance, and know what the watch may share after a call.
Before you need Emergency SOS
Use the paired iPhone to review your watch’s Emergency SOS settings and prepare information that may help responders.
Set up Medical ID
On the paired iPhone, open Health, tap your profile picture, choose Medical ID, and tap Get Started or Edit. Add relevant information, such as allergies, medical conditions, medications, and emergency contacts. Consider enabling Show When Locked so responders can view Medical ID from the locked iPhone. Apple’s Medical ID instructions explain the current options.

Add emergency contacts
In the iPhone’s Health > profile picture > Medical ID > Edit, add trusted people under Emergency Contacts. After an emergency call, the watch can text these contacts with your location unless you cancel the notification. Location updates may continue for a period after entering SOS mode.
Notifications are not guaranteed: Apple cautions they may not be sent if Messages is not the selected texting app or has been deleted. Only add people who should receive your emergency status and location.
Review the automatic-call setting
On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app, tap My Watch > Emergency SOS, and review Hold Side Button to Dial. Turn it off if you do not want a continued side-button hold to trigger the countdown call. The manual Emergency Call slider remains available.

- Drag Emergency Call to place the call immediately.
- Alternatively, continue holding the side button through the countdown to have the watch place the call automatically.
On Apple Watch Ultra models, holding the Action button can also open the emergency controls. Follow the on-screen instructions and speak with the responder. Apple’s Emergency SOS guidance describes the process.
What happens after an Emergency SOS call
Stay connected to the responder. If you called accidentally, do not hang up: wait for an emergency responder to answer and explain that help is not needed.
After the call ends, the watch can text your emergency contacts and share your location unless you cancel. If prompted and you do not want contacts notified, tap No. To stop location sharing afterward, tap Stop Sharing in the reminder notification. Contact notifications and location sharing can be affected by Messages settings.
How to stop an accidental countdown
If the countdown starts before the call is placed, release the side button to stop it. If the call has already been made, stay on the line and explain the mistake rather than hanging up.

How to turn off automatic side-button dialing
- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > Emergency SOS.
- Turn off Hold Side Button to Dial.
This disables the automatic countdown triggered by continuing to hold the side button. You can still place a call by dragging the Emergency Call slider.
Connectivity and travel limitations
An emergency call requires a suitable connection: cellular service, Wi-Fi Calling with an internet connection, or an eligible satellite route. The watch or nearby paired iPhone may provide the connection, depending on the model and setup. Cellular availability, carrier support, emergency-calling network support, and regional requirements affect whether a call connects.

Apple says Apple Watch SE (GPS + Cellular), Series 5 or later (GPS + Cellular), and all Ultra models can call local emergency services while traveling abroad, subject to support in the destination. Check Apple’s current Emergency SOS availability and requirements for your model and destination.
Fall Detection and Crash Detection are separate
Disabling Hold Side Button to Dial does not turn off Fall Detection or Crash Detection. These are separate automatic safety features, with model, connection, and software limitations.

Fall Detection
On supported watches, Fall Detection can alert emergency services after a hard fall if you remain immobile and do not respond to the alert and countdown. It cannot detect every fall, and some high-impact activities may be mistaken for a fall. Automatic calling requires a qualifying connection. Review Apple’s Fall Detection guidance for supported models and settings.
Crash Detection
On supported models, Crash Detection can attempt to call emergency services after a severe car crash if you do not respond to the alert. Availability depends on the watch model and software. Review its settings separately from manual Emergency SOS.
Emergency SOS via satellite
Satellite emergency communication is conditional on a supported device, region, and suitable conditions; it is not a standard capability of every Apple Watch. Apple’s support information describes limited satellite-related capabilities, including certain notifications from a paired iPhone in specific circumstances. Do not assume that any Apple Watch can place a manual satellite emergency call. Check Apple’s current model and regional guidance before relying on satellite connectivity.

- Medical ID: Add relevant medical information and review lock-screen access.
- Emergency contacts: Add trusted people and keep Messages available and selected if you rely on automatic notifications.
- Call method: Know how to drag Emergency Call and whether continued holding is enabled.
- Connection: Understand whether your watch depends on a nearby iPhone, cellular service, Wi-Fi Calling, or an eligible satellite route.
- Accidental call: Release the button before the call connects; if connected, stay on the line and explain.
