A red lightning bolt or blank screen can mean the battery is deeply depleted; a charge stopping near 80% may be normal battery management rather than a fault.
1. Check what the charging screen is telling you
Place the back of the watch on its magnetic charger and wait a moment. The symbols matter:
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Red lightning bolt | The battery is critically low. The watch may not have enough charge to turn on yet. |
| Blank screen or charging-cable icon | The battery may be fully depleted. Leave it connected for up to 30 minutes. |
| Lightning bolt on the watch face | Charging has started. |
| No symbol after 30 minutes | Continue with the charger, cable, alignment, power-source, and restart checks below. |
A blank display does not automatically mean the watch is refusing to charge. Apple says a fully depleted Apple Watch may need as long as 30 minutes before the charging indicator appears.
2. Reconnect the charger and use a proper power source
- Use an Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable.
- Push the cable completely into its USB Power Adapter.
- Plug the adapter firmly into a power outlet.
- Try another Apple Watch charging cable if one is available.
- Try another USB Power Adapter and, if necessary, another outlet.
For faster charging, Apple recommends a USB-C Power Delivery charger with the USB-C Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable supplied with the watch. Charging through a computer, car port, or USB hub—especially one shared with other devices—may be slower.
#1 Best Overall
- Durable, woven cable with fast-charging capabilities for select Apple Watch models. Simply hold the connector near the back of the watch, where magnets cause it to snap into place automatically.
- Supports fast charging on Apple Watch Series 7 and later and Apple Watch Ultra models. Supports regular charge times on all other models.
- Compatible with all Apple Watch
- USB-C Cable Length: 1m or 3.2 feet
3. Reposition and clean the magnetic connection
The watch must sit flat and align correctly with the charger’s magnets. Remove it, place it back on the center of the charging puck, and check whether the lightning bolt appears.
- Wipe the back of the watch and the charging puck with a clean, dry cloth.
- Remove any protective plastic wrapping that remains on either side of a new charger.
- Check that the watch is not being held at an angle by its band or by a charging stand.
With an Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock or MagSafe Duo Charger, 44mm, 45mm, and 49mm models may need the charger tilted to another angle or laid flat. If an Apple Watch Ultra or later still charges unreliably with the charger flat, remove the band and try again.
4. Leave a fully drained watch connected
After cleaning and realigning the charger, leave the watch connected for up to 30 minutes. Avoid repeatedly lifting it off the puck to check the screen. If the battery was completely empty, the watch may remain apparently inactive before it has enough power to display the charging screen.
5. Force-restart the Apple Watch
If the watch still does not charge after the basic checks, force-restart it:

- Press and hold the side button and Digital Crown at the same time.
- Keep holding both buttons for at least 10 seconds.
- Release them when the Apple logo appears.
- Put the watch back on its charger and wait again.
Do not use a force restart as a substitute for checking the cable and charger first. Apple recommends it when the watch still will not charge after those checks.
When an Apple Watch stops charging at 80%
Stopping near 80% is often intentional. Optimized Battery Charging can delay the final part of the charge when the watch predicts it will remain connected for a long time. The battery may stay roughly between 75% and 80% rather than immediately reaching 100%.
To charge fully right now:
- Leave the watch on its charger.
- Tap the watch to display the charging screen.
- Tap the circle containing the green or yellow charging icon.
- Tap Charge to Full Now.
To change the feature’s setting, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Battery Charging, then choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow or Turn Off.
On Apple Watch Series 9 or later and every Apple Watch Ultra, Optimized Battery Charging is always on. Supported models can also use Optimized Charge Limit, which may stop charging below 100% based on usage and conditions. The Charge to Full Now option is the appropriate way to override that limit when it is available.

What “Slow Charger” means in watchOS 26
If Settings > Battery shows Slow Charger, it does not mean the watch or charger has failed. It means a higher-wattage setup could charge the watch faster.
For a faster connection:
- Use a USB-C Power Delivery charger.
- Connect the cable directly to a dedicated charger.
- Avoid computer ports, car ports, and shared USB hubs.
- Use the cable supplied with the watch instead of an older Apple Watch cable when possible.
- Charge at normal room temperature. Very hot or cold conditions can reduce charging speed.
Check for a country-specific WPT charger problem
A WPT-compliant charger purchased in mainland China or Indonesia may be incompatible with a particular Apple Watch. In that situation, the watch can display: Unable to charge. This is a country-specific charger. It is incompatible with this Apple Watch.
WPT-compliant chargers are marked WPT, and their packaging says WPT Compliant. They also do not support fast charging. If you have this warning, changing the watch’s position will not solve the compatibility issue; use a compatible Apple Watch charger instead.
Update watchOS if the problem is intermittent
A software update may help when charging behavior is inconsistent but the hardware still responds. From the paired iPhone, open Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > Software Update. You can also use Settings > General > Software Update > Install on the watch.

For installation, Apple requires the watch to have at least 50% charge. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and near the watch, and leave the watch on its charger during the update. Apple’s current watchOS 26 support includes Apple Watch SE 2 and later, Series 6 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later.
Use a compatible Apple Watch charger
Apple Watch does not treat every wireless charging pad as a compatible charger. An ordinary Qi pad is not a universal substitute for an Apple Watch magnetic charger. Use an Apple charger or a compatible accessory with Made for Apple Watch certification.
A third-party puck that physically fits is not automatically a suitable charger. Apple warns that uncertified accessories can cause slow charging, repeated charging chimes, or reduced battery lifespan. A higher-wattage adapter alone also does not guarantee fast charging: fast charging requires a compatible watch and the appropriate USB-C Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charging Cable. Current fast-charge support begins with Apple Watch Series 7 and later, Apple Watch Ultra and later, and Apple Watch SE 3.

- Used a clean, correctly aligned Apple Watch charger;
- Tested another charging cable;
- Tested another USB Power Adapter and outlet;
- Left the watch connected for up to 30 minutes; and
- Completed the side-button and Digital Crown force restart.
Those checks eliminate the most common power-source, alignment, battery-state, and software lockup causes. If none changes the result, the fault is more likely to require hardware inspection.

FAQ
Why is my Apple Watch showing a red lightning bolt?
A red lightning bolt normally means the battery is too depleted to turn on, not that the charger is broken. Leave the watch on a correctly aligned charger and allow up to 30 minutes for the charging indicator to change.
Why will my Apple Watch not charge past 80%?
Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit may be active. On the charging screen, tap the charging icon and choose Charge to Full Now. You can also check Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Battery Charging.
Can I charge an Apple Watch on any wireless charging pad?
No. Use an Apple Watch magnetic charger or a compatible Made for Apple Watch accessory. An ordinary Qi wireless pad is not a universal Apple Watch charger.
What should I do if my Apple Watch still will not charge?
Try another Apple Watch cable, USB Power Adapter, and outlet; clean and realign the charging surfaces; wait up to 30 minutes; then hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds. If there is still no charging indicator, contact Apple for service.
The Bottom Line
Start with the simple causes: correctly align and clean the magnetic charger, test another cable and adapter, and leave a fully drained watch connected for up to 30 minutes. An 80% limit is usually a battery-management feature, while “Slow Charger” points to a slower power setup rather than a failed watch. If a known-good charger and a force restart produce no charging indicator, the watch is ready for service.
