Some owners of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 have described burning and redness beneath the sensor area, according to a MacRumors report published October 7, 2026. The reports come from forum posts and Reddit threads. They do not establish how many people are affected, and no cause specific to the new models has been confirmed. Apple’s wearing guidance lists fit, material sensitivity and exposure to irritants as possible contributors to skin discomfort in general, and that is the framework to use while the picture is still unclear.
What owners are reporting
The MacRumors report summarizes posts from its own forums and from Reddit. Readers describe a burning sensation and redness under the sensor area on the back of the watch, on the models named in the report: the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The wording describes reported symptoms, not a diagnosed condition.
- Reported symptoms: burning sensation and redness under the sensor area.
- Models named: Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.
- Source type: anecdotal forum and Reddit posts, summarized by MacRumors on October 7, 2026.
- Not established: how many people are affected, whether the watch caused the symptoms, and whether any single design change is responsible.
Is the new sensor design to blame?
MacRumors notes that the Series 12 and Ultra 4 include changes to heart-rate measurement and sensor design. Readers have proposed a link between those changes and the irritation, but that link has not been confirmed. Apple’s September 2026 announcement of the Series 12, “Introducing Apple Watch Series 12, with the all-new Health Sensing System” on Apple Newsroom, is the primary source for what Apple changed in the hardware, and the reporting reviewed here does not tie those changes to skin reactions. Treat the sensor as a suspect that has not been proven guilty.
Contributors Apple identifies for skin irritation
Apple’s “Wearing your Apple Watch” guidance says reactions can come from personal sensitivities, environmental factors, or extended exposure to irritants such as soap or sweat. The table below sets out each factor Apple names and what to check on your own watch.

| Factor | What Apple says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Band fit | “An overly tight band can cause skin irritation.” A band that is too loose can cause rubbing. | The band should sit snugly without leaving marks or pressing into the skin during wear. |
| Nickel | Present in some watch cases, band components and magnets. Apple says nickel levels are below European REACH restrictions, and acknowledges that some people may still be sensitive. | If you know you react to nickel, check the case and band materials for your model against Apple’s listings. |
| Acrylates and methacrylates | Trace amounts appear in listed cases and bands. Apple says adhesive components are designed not to touch skin directly. | Note whether irritation started after a new band or case was fitted, since band changes are the easiest variable to isolate. |
| Moisture and irritants | Soap, sweat, sunscreen and lotion can irritate skin when they stay trapped under the watch. | Look for product residue or sweat under the watch after workouts or exposure to these products. |
| Individual sensitivity | Apple recognizes that some people are more sensitive to materials that are otherwise considered safe. | Consider whether you have reacted to metals, adhesives or wristwear before. |
What to do if irritation appears
- Stop wearing the watch. Apple’s guidance states that you may want to consult your physician before you put your Apple Watch back on if you have redness, swelling, itchiness, or any other irritation.
- Remove the band and clean the parts. Apple Support’s “How to clean your Apple Watch” instructions say to remove the band before cleaning. The cited instructions do not require a specialized cleaning product.
- Dry the skin and the watch completely. Apple says keeping the watch, bands and skin clean and dry maximizes comfort and prevents long-term damage to the watch. Pay particular attention after workouts or contact with sweat, soap, sunscreen or lotion.
- Adjust the fit. Check that the band is neither too tight nor so loose that it rubs. Apple’s quoted guidance is: “A band that’s too loose can cause rubbing.”
- Keep a simple log. Record when the redness appears, how long it lasts, what the watch was in contact with, and which band and fit you used. This is the information a physician will need, and it is also the only way to tell whether a change in band or habit makes a difference.
Changing bands: what to compare
If you are considering a different band, compare three things: the material that touches your skin, the fit and rubbing risk, and whether the band is compatible with your watch model and size. Apple lists the materials for each supported band type in its guidance, so check those listings before buying.
A band change should not be expected to fix symptoms under the sensor. The reports describe irritation beneath the sensor area, and the sources reviewed here do not show that switching bands resolves it. A band swap is worth testing only as a variable you can control, and it should not replace seeing a physician if symptoms continue.
