What changed with Series 4?
Series 4 brought a redesigned watch with thinner display borders, curved corners, and 40mm and 44mm cases replacing the earlier 38mm and 42mm sizes. Apple described its display as over 30 percent larger than the previous generation (Apple Newsroom, 2018). It also introduced the S4 processor, ECG capability, and hard-fall detection.

Larger display in a similar overall footprint
The 40mm version has a 324 × 394-pixel display and the 44mm version has a 368 × 448-pixel display. Both use an LTPO OLED Retina display with a stated maximum brightness of 1,000 nits (Apple Support, “Apple Watch Series 4 – Technical Specifications”).
Models, finishes, and editions
Apple offered Series 4 in aluminum and stainless-steel configurations, with GPS or GPS + Cellular depending on model. Nike and Hermès editions were also available. S4 processor and performance
The S4 is a 64-bit dual-core processor paired with Apple’s W3 wireless chip. Apple said the S4 delivered up to twice the processor performance of the previous generation (Apple Newsroom, 2018). That is a launch-era comparison, not a claim that Series 4 performs like current Apple Watch models.

Fall detection
The accelerometer and gyroscope support hard-fall detection. After a detected fall, the watch can alert the wearer and provide an option to contact emergency services. Do not treat detection or emergency response as guaranteed; performance and availability depend on settings, connectivity, region, and circumstances.
GPS versus GPS + Cellular
Both configurations include GPS. GPS + Cellular models add LTE and UMTS connectivity, but independent cellular functions require a supported carrier, compatible plan, and availability in the buyer’s location. Before buying a used Cellular watch, verify that its exact model works with the intended carrier and that the previous owner has removed and cancelled any active mobile plan.
A GPS-only model avoids the need for a watch cellular plan. Either configuration still depends on compatibility between the watch’s installed software and the buyer’s iPhone; check the actual devices before purchase.
Case sizes and band compatibility
Series 4 comes in 40mm and 44mm cases. The 40mm case uses the band family for 38mm and 41mm Apple Watch cases; the 44mm case uses the family for 42mm and 45mm cases. Confirm the size grouping before buying a replacement band or case.

Water resistance: what the 50-meter rating means
Apple rates Series 4 as water resistant to 50 meters for shallow-water activities such as swimming, and says not to use it for scuba diving, waterskiing, or high-velocity water activities (Apple Support, “Apple Watch Series 4 – Technical Specifications”). The rating describes the model, not the condition of a particular used watch. Age, damage, or repair may compromise water resistance, so do not assume a used unit remains safe for swimming.
Battery life, charging, and battery health
Apple’s launch specification claimed up to 18 hours of battery life under stated preproduction test conditions; Apple notes that results vary with use, coverage, configuration, and other factors (Apple Newsroom, 2018; Apple Support technical specifications). An older used battery may perform differently. Series 4 uses a magnetic charging cable.
Ask the seller to show battery condition in the watch settings if available, and test charging and normal operation. The research did not establish a current battery-health threshold or a standard price adjustment, so judge battery condition alongside the specific listing and your needs.
watchOS support and iPhone compatibility
Apple announced watchOS 9 support for Series 4 in 2022, paired with iPhone 8 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later running iOS 16 (Apple Newsroom, 2022).
