The Apple Watch Series 9 remains a capable standard smartwatch, though it is no longer in Apple’s regular new-watch lineup. It introduced the S9 SiP, on-device Siri, Double Tap, a brighter display, and 64GB of storage in familiar 41mm and 45mm cases.
For iPhone owners, a well-priced refurbished Series 9 can deliver ECG, sleep tracking, workout recording, and current watchOS compatibility. Check the exact model, cellular status, battery condition, and—especially for U.S. units—Blood Oxygen functionality before buying.
Apple Watch Series 9 price and availability
Apple introduced the Series 9 in September 2023, with retail availability beginning September 22. Its original U.S. starting price was $399 for the entry GPS aluminum configuration; larger cases, cellular connectivity, stainless steel, and premium bands cost more.
As of August 9, 2026, Series 9 is no longer in Apple’s regular U.S. new-watch lineup. Apple lists newer generations, including Series 11, alongside SE 3, Ultra 3, and Hermès models. Series 9 may still appear in Apple Certified Refurbished stock, but prices and configurations vary with inventory.

These are inventory snapshots, not fixed prices. Used-market listings may be cheaper, but check activation lock, battery condition, display condition, included charger, and whether it is a U.S. Blood Oxygen-restricted unit.
Design, sizes, and materials
The Series 9 uses Apple’s rounded rectangular case and supports the Apple Watch band ecosystem. It comes in 41mm and 45mm sizes. The 41mm case generally suits smaller wrists, while the 45mm version offers more room for text and complications.

Aluminum models were available in Pink, Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and (PRODUCT)RED. Stainless-steel models came in Gold, Silver, and Graphite. Stainless steel feels more substantial, but its extra weight may be noticeable during sleep tracking and exercise.
Display
The Series 9 has an always-on Retina LTPO OLED display with 326 pixels per inch. Brightness ranges from 1 nit at minimum to 2,000 nits at maximum, helping keep the display readable outdoors.

S9 processor, storage, and controls
Apple’s S9 SiP is a 64-bit dual-core processor paired with a four-core Neural Engine. The watch has 64GB of storage for apps, offline music, podcasts, and downloaded content.

Connectivity includes Wi‑Fi 4 (802.11n) and Bluetooth 5.3. Controls and features include:
- Digital Crown with haptic feedback
- Side button and touchscreen
- Siri, including supported on-device requests
- Double Tap hand gesture
- Precision Finding with supported iPhone models to locate a nearby iPhone
On-device Siri can handle supported requests without sending every request to the internet and can access or log certain health information. Capabilities vary by language, region, and software version.
How Double Tap works
Double Tap brings the thumb and index finger together twice on the watch hand to perform a context-sensitive action. Configure it on the watch at Settings → Gestures → Double Tap, or on iPhone in Apple Watch app → My Watch → Settings → Gestures → Double Tap.
Available choices include:
- Playback: Play/Pause or Skip
- Smart Stack: Advance or Select
- Off
For recognition, the watch must be awake, unlocked, worn snugly, and set to the correct wrist under Settings → General → Orientation. Double Tap is unavailable in Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, Water Lock, Theater Mode, when the watch is locked, when the display is inactive because the wrist is down, or when configured for a family member through Apple Watch For Your Kids. It is also unavailable with certain accessibility hand-gesture features enabled and does not work in every app; Apple specifically excludes ECG and Depth.
A loose fit, tattoos, movement, or making the gesture before waking the display can also prevent recognition. Double Tap can dismiss timers or control playback, but it is not a universal replacement for tapping the screen.
Health and fitness tracking
Health features include an ECG app, third-generation optical heart sensor, temperature sensing, sleep-stage tracking, Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, and high- and low-heart-rate notifications.

The watch also supports irregular-rhythm notifications, the Medications app, Mindfulness, Noise monitoring, and workout tracking for activities such as:
- Running and cycling
- Swimming and hiking
- Multisport workouts
- Strength training and HIIT
- Yoga and Pilates
The ECG feature is intended for people aged 22 and older and is not available in every country or region. Temperature sensing is not intended for medical use. Cycle Tracking should not be used as birth control or to diagnose a health condition.
Blood Oxygen: check the exact U.S. model
Blood Oxygen functionality differs among Series 9 units. U.S. units sold by Apple beginning January 18, 2024, do not have active on-watch measurement. Apple identifies affected units by part numbers ending in “LW/A”.
In watchOS 11.6.1, Apple introduced a revised Blood Oxygen experience for affected U.S. models: measurements are calculated on the paired iPhone and viewed in the Health app. This is not the original measurement process running directly on the watch. International models and earlier U.S. units may differ, subject to local approval.

GPS versus GPS + Cellular
Both versions have built-in GPS to record outdoor workout routes. The GPS model generally needs a nearby iPhone or Wi‑Fi for calls, messages, notifications, and online services.
The GPS + Cellular model can perform supported communication and streaming tasks away from the iPhone when configured with an active carrier plan. Buying the hardware does not include service; carrier support and plan requirements vary, and service may add a monthly fee.

Apple Watch For Your Kids requires a GPS + Cellular model. Some features are unavailable when the watch is configured for a family member, so cellular is not automatically the best choice for every household.
Navigation and durability
Navigation features include GPS, GNSS, Galileo, and BeiDou support, a compass with Waypoints and Backtrack, and an always-on altimeter. The watch is useful for hikes, runs, and general outdoor navigation, though it lacks the larger battery and more rugged positioning of the Ultra range.

The Series 9 has IP6X dust resistance and a 50-meter water-resistance rating under ISO 22810:2010. It is suitable for shallow-water activities such as swimming, but not scuba diving, waterskiing, or other high-velocity water activities. Water resistance can diminish over time.

Actual endurance varies with cellular use, signal strength, workouts, GPS, display settings, notifications, and battery age. Apple’s test figures use a defined workload and are not a guarantee of a full day and night for every user.
Every Series 9 includes a 1-meter Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB‑C Cable. A USB‑C power adapter is not listed as included, so buyers may need to supply a compatible adapter.

The Series 9 launched with watchOS 10 and originally required an iPhone XS or later running iOS 17 or later. It is compatible with watchOS 26. As of August 9, 2026, the latest listed version is watchOS 26.6, released July 27, 2026.
