To remove a stuck Apple Watch strap, place the watch face down on a clean, soft surface, hold down the band-release button on the back, and slide the band sideways out of its slot. If it does not move, retry while keeping the button held down; do not force, twist, or pry it. If it remains stuck or the button or connector appears damaged, stop and contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider.
Remove the Apple Watch strap using the official method
- Take the watch off your wrist. Work on a stable surface.
- Place the watch face down on a clean surface, such as a lint-free microfiber cloth or soft padded mat.
- Press and hold the band-release button on the back of the watch.
- Slide the band sideways across the slot to remove it. Keep holding the button while sliding.
If the band will not come out, press the release button again and make sure it remains held down as you slide. Apple Support says, “Never force a band into the slot.” Do not try to overcome resistance by prying or twisting.
If the Apple Watch band is stuck in its slot
Reset the watch on the soft surface and retry the button-and-slide method. If the band still will not move, stop rather than applying more force. Apple’s guidance does not provide a repair method for a jammed release button or damaged connector; contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider for help.

Link Bracelet
If the butterfly closure is open, close it first. Use the quick-release button on the inside of the bracelet to separate it into two pieces before removing it from the watch. Do not force or twist the bracelet.

Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop
These bands stretch over the wrist rather than using a usual clasp. Apple says to pull from the bottom to stretch them when putting them on or taking them off.
Milanese Loop
The redesigned Milanese Loop introduced in 2018 can be opened by sliding its magnetic closure through the connector. Earlier versions cannot be opened that way.

Ocean Band, Alpine Loop, and Trail Loop
Apple provides specific alignment advice for installing these precision-fit Ultra bands. That installation advice is not a way to force a stuck band out: use the normal release-button and sideways-slide method, and do not force it.
What not to do
- Do not pry with a knife, screwdriver, pliers, or another tool.
- Do not force or twist the band to get it out.
- Do not keep trying if the release button or connector appears damaged or the band remains stuck after retrying.
Choosing a compatible replacement band
If the existing band is damaged, a compatible replacement may be appropriate, but buying a band will not fix a jammed release mechanism. Check your watch’s case size and the specific band’s compatibility before ordering.
