For a marathon, the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro is the safer choice because its larger case options provide substantially more multi-band GPS headroom, and its navigation and training tools are deeper. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 remains the better everyday smartwatch for many iPhone owners, with a lower starting price, a broader app and health ecosystem, and strong race features. No published source has documented a same-course marathon in which both exact models were worn under identical settings, so “won by miles” is a recommendation based on battery margin, training depth and navigation—not a measured head-to-head race result.

Which watch is better for a marathon?

The Fenix 9 Pro is the stronger marathon specialist, especially in the 47 mm or 51 mm sizes. Its multi-band GPS ratings are 32 and 56 hours respectively, leaving far more margin for a long race, pre-race GPS lock, delays and post-race tracking than the Ultra 4’s workout modes. Choose the Apple Watch Ultra 4 instead if you value smartwatch, health and iPhone features more than multi-day endurance.

Smartwatch and health Broader apps, ECG, readiness, cellular and satellite connectivity Sport-first interface, flashlight, many sports modes and optional inReach connectivity

Will the Fenix 9 Pro last through a full marathon?

Yes, the 47 mm and 51 mm versions have substantial reserve for a normal marathon. Tom’s Guide lists 32 hours of multi-band GPS for 47 mm and 56 hours for 51 mm; the 43 mm model is rated for 18 hours. Those are published battery ratings, so temperature, display settings, satellite mode, sensors and phone connectivity can reduce actual runtime.

The larger model also helps over the entire race weekend. Tom’s Guide reported 10–11 days from a tested 51 mm Fenix 9 Pro with frequent accurate-GPS runs, enough to arrive at the start without treating a pre-race charge as a critical task. The trade-off is size and weight: a 51 mm watch can feel bulky on smaller wrists, while the 43 mm version gives up much of the battery advantage.

How much margin does the Apple Watch Ultra 4 provide?

Apple rates Ultra 4 for 18 hours of outdoor workout tracking, 25 hours in Extended Workout and 45 hours in Max Extended Workout. Apple’s 2026 specifications also list up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in Low Power mode, while its newsroom describes up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking in Max Extended Workout. These figures refer to different operating modes and should not be treated as one single endurance number.

An experienced marathoner finishing well inside the 18-hour outdoor-workout rating has a comfortable race window, but the practical margin is narrower than the Fenix 9 Pro’s 47 mm or 51 mm ratings. Starting with a full charge and selecting the least power-hungry workout mode that still records the metrics you need is sensible for an unusually long event.

Are their GPS tracks accurate enough for marathon pacing?

Both watches have evidence supporting dependable distance tracking, but there is no published identical-course marathon comparison of these exact models. Tom’s Guide reported that a Fenix 9 Pro half-marathon track was almost exactly the official distance. That supports confidence in Garmin’s distance recording, not a guaranteed result on every course.

  • Push your limits and cross-train with 100+ activity profiles, featuring enhancements to the rowing and rucking activities — as well as advanced fitness and performance tools

Apple’s race-route and pacing tools are designed for the same practical problem: keeping effort and split targets visible without carrying a separate bike computer or handheld GPS. Tall buildings, tree cover, tunnels, sharp switchbacks and corner-cutting can affect any wrist GPS, so runners should still use official course markers for final distance decisions.

Which watch measures marathon heart rate more reliably?

The available direct comparison found near-parity in one demanding session. In TechRadar’s 30-minute hilly run, a Frontier X2 chest monitor averaged 158 bpm, Garmin 159 bpm and Apple 160 bpm. All three readings were within two beats per minute, supporting close performance in that run rather than a universal winner.

TechRadar’s Ultra 4 review also reported an average heart-rate reading two bpm from an electrical monitor and one bpm from Garmin during the same run. Wrist sensors can be disrupted by loose fit, cold skin, sweat, arm movement and cadence lock; a snug fit above the wrist bone or a compatible chest strap is preferable when heart-rate zones determine the workout.

Which provides better marathon training analysis?

Garmin has the broader built-in coaching and load-management stack. The Fenix 9 Pro combines Training Readiness with running tolerance, endurance scoring and extensive post-run analysis, helping a runner decide not only how fast to run but whether the body is prepared for another hard session.

Garmin features that matter before and after race day

  • Training Readiness: a daily view of recovery and preparedness.
  • Running tolerance: context for how much running load your body may handle.
  • Endurance scoring: an estimate aimed at longer-duration performance.
  • Routable maps: turn-by-turn outdoor navigation and rerouting on supported routes.
  • Extensive sport profiles: useful when marathon training includes cycling, hiking, strength work or other cross-training.

What the Ultra 4 does for runners

Ultra 4 includes race routes, a pacer, customizable workouts and running power, along with other running metrics. These tools are strong for structured sessions and race-day pacing, and Apple’s readiness and health features put training information alongside sleep, heart and activity data in the same ecosystem.

Which is easier to use on race day?

The Ultra 4 is the more familiar choice for runners already living in Apple’s interface. Its bright display, cellular capability and broad app support make it useful before and after the start, and the pacer and race-route features keep key information close at hand.

The Fenix 9 Pro is built around sport controls and endurance. Its larger battery reserve reduces charging anxiety, routable maps are more capable for unfamiliar courses or travel, and the built-in flashlight is practical at early-morning starts. Optional inReach connectivity adds satellite messaging and tracking capability, but it increases the purchase price and may require a separate subscription.

How do case size, phone compatibility and price change the decision?

Case and comfort

Ultra 4 uses a 49 mm Grade 5 titanium case and weighs 63 g. Garmin offers 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm Fenix 9 Pro sizes, allowing a smaller fit or a larger battery. The 51 mm option maximizes endurance but is the least discreet; runners with narrow wrists should consider whether the 47 mm battery margin is sufficient before choosing the largest case.

Phone ecosystem

Apple’s strongest case is the iPhone relationship: a broad app ecosystem, health records, ECG, readiness and optional cellular and satellite connectivity. Garmin is less dependent on a phone during a workout and is oriented toward athletes who want training and navigation data to remain central across many sports.

Total cost

Ultra 4 starts at $799 in Apple’s 2026 announcement. Fenix 9 Pro comparison pricing starts around $1,099 and increases with size and inReach hardware; any satellite service subscription is an additional ongoing cost. The Garmin premium buys endurance and specialist features, not simply a different case material.

Which one should a marathon runner buy?

Choose the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro when

  • You want the largest possible GPS battery buffer, particularly for a 47 mm or 51 mm model.
  • Your training includes long runs, navigation, multiple sports or multi-day events.
  • You use readiness, load and endurance metrics to plan training.
  • You may need maps or satellite communication away from cellular coverage.

Choose the Apple Watch Ultra 4 when

  • You already use an iPhone and want the broadest smartwatch and health integration.
  • Your races fit comfortably within Apple’s selected workout-mode rating.
  • You prefer race routes, a pacer, customizable workouts and running power in a lower-cost starting package.
  • ECG, cellular features and everyday apps matter as much as training depth.

For the title’s marathon question, Garmin wins on operational headroom and specialist preparation tools. Apple remains a compelling race watch and the better all-round smartwatch for many iPhone users; the choice is less about basic heart-rate accuracy than about how much battery and training infrastructure you want around the race.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I charge either watch during a marathon without losing my data?

A watch can generally be connected to power only if the event setup and accessory support it, but doing so may interrupt workout recording or change the workout mode. Treat charging during the race as a contingency, not a pacing plan, and verify the watch’s behavior before race morning.

Should I use multi-band GPS for an entire marathon?

Multi-band mode is most useful where buildings, cliffs or dense tree cover can reflect satellite signals. On an open course, a lower-power satellite mode may preserve battery with little practical distance difference, but the correct setting depends on the course and your accuracy priority.

Will either watch replace a chest heart-rate strap?

For many steady runs, wrist readings can be close to a chest reference, as the TechRadar comparison illustrates. A chest strap is still the safer choice for interval training, medical-grade monitoring needs or runners whose wrist fit and skin conditions make optical readings unstable.

Do I need cellular service to follow a marathon route?

No. A route that is downloaded or synced to the watch can be followed without an active cellular plan. Cellular or satellite connectivity matters for communication, live tracking and emergency features, not for the basic act of recording GPS distance.
