Yes—the original report was substantially accurate, but its timing is now outdated. Bloomberg reported on March 13, 2025 that Apple was developing in-person conversation translation for AirPods, potentially including existing models. Apple later released the feature as Live Translation with AirPods in iOS 26, rather than iOS 19.
It is not available on every AirPods model. You need compatible AirPods, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later, current AirPods firmware, supported languages, and availability in your region.
What happened to the iOS 19 AirPods translation rumor?
The original story was a rumor, not an Apple announcement. On March 13, 2025, MacRumors reported, citing Bloomberg, that Apple was preparing a feature for translating in-person conversations through AirPods. The report suggested that existing AirPods models might support it and associated the work with the expected iOS 19 release cycle.
That distinction matters: the report described rumored development, while Apple’s current documentation describes a shipped feature. Apple ultimately introduced it under the name Live Translation with AirPods as part of iOS 26.

In short, the feature first circulated as an iOS 19 possibility, but Apple released it as an iOS 26 feature.
Which AirPods support Live Translation?
Apple currently lists these compatible models:

Every compatible model also needs the latest firmware. An iPhone update alone does not make unsupported AirPods compatible, so check the exact model rather than assuming that all AirPods receive the feature.
Apple’s iOS 26 feature documentation separately identifies AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 and later. Apple’s current support page additionally lists AirPods Max 2.
Which iPhone is required?
Live Translation with AirPods is tied to Apple Intelligence. The iPhone must therefore be an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later.

In practice, the compatible range starts with the iPhone 15 Pro generation and newer supported models—not the standard iPhone 15. Saying “iPhone 15 or later” without identifying the Pro requirement can be misleading.

You also need the Translate app, supported language data, and a supported region and language configuration.
How Live Translation works
The feature is designed for a face-to-face conversation:
- You wear compatible AirPods.
- The iPhone uses Apple’s Translate and Apple Intelligence systems to process the conversation.
- Translated speech is played through your AirPods.
- The iPhone can show or play your translated response for the other participant.
The other person does not need compatible AirPods. If they do not have AirPods with Live Translation, Apple says you can use the Translate app on the iPhone to display translated text or play translated audio for them.

These are language variants, not simply ten interchangeable language labels. For example, Apple distinguishes U.S. and U.K. English, Brazilian Portuguese from European Portuguese, and simplified from traditional Mandarin Chinese.
Support can vary by region and may change as Apple adds languages. Some languages were staged after the initial release: Apple’s launch coverage said Italian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese were planned for later in 2025. Check Apple’s current availability information before relying on a particular language pair.

- The latest AirPods firmware.
- An Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, practically starting with the iPhone 15 Pro generation.
- iOS 26 or later.
- The Translate app installed.
- Apple Intelligence enabled.
- Supported languages selected and downloaded when prompted.
- A supported region and language configuration.
How to start a translated conversation
Apple can change menu names and control locations between iOS releases, so use its current support instructions if a label differs. The basic process is:
- Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later.
- Update the AirPods firmware and connect them to the iPhone.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Open the Translate app.
- Choose the two supported languages.
- Download language data if iOS requests it.
- Start Live Translation from the Translate app or the available AirPods translation controls.
- Speak normally and allow time for the iPhone to process each spoken segment.
- Use the iPhone’s screen or audio output for the other participant’s translated response.
Troubleshooting: why the feature may be missing
The feature does not appear
Check that the iPhone supports Apple Intelligence and is running iOS 26 or later. A standard iPhone 15 is not equivalent to an iPhone 15 Pro for this requirement.
Your AirPods are not recognized
Verify the model. Only AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are listed; AirPods 4 without ANC are not. Also check that the AirPods have current firmware and are properly paired.

A language is unavailable
Confirm that both language variants are supported in your region and download the required language data in Translate. General Apple Translate support does not automatically mean that the language is available for AirPods Live Translation.

Feature availability can vary by geography, language, and Apple Account or regional configuration. Coverage reported that iOS 26.2 expanded Live Translation on AirPods to the European Union, but regional availability should be checked against Apple’s latest documentation.
The translation is poor
Move to a quieter environment, avoid speaking over the other person, slow down slightly, and use shorter, clearer sentences. Do not rely on the feature as a guaranteed professional interpreter for medical, legal, safety-critical, or other high-stakes conversations.

Not necessarily. AirPods Pro 2 owners may already have compatible hardware and could receive the feature after meeting the firmware, iPhone, iOS, language, and regional requirements. Check compatibility before spending money.
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
Apple’s U.S. shopping page showed a listed price of $179 when checked on August 16, 2026. It is the lower-priced Apple-listed option identified here that supports Live Translation and includes active noise cancellation. It does not offer the full set of features associated with AirPods Pro models, including Apple’s listed hearing-health features.

AirPods Pro 2
For existing owners, this is the most important option: Apple lists AirPods Pro 2 and later as compatible. Buying another pair solely for translation may be unnecessary.
AirPods Pro 3
Apple’s U.S. shopping page showed a listed price of $249 on August 16, 2026. AirPods Pro 3 support Live Translation and add premium Pro features, but they are difficult to justify if translation is the only reason for upgrading because lower-cost and older compatible models are available.
Prices are U.S. list-price observations from that date, not permanent worldwide prices. More importantly, buying AirPods alone is not enough: an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone is also required.
What Live Translation cannot promise
- It is not universal across AirPods models, iPhones, languages, or regions.
- It is not necessarily instantaneous or perfectly accurate.
- It may struggle with noise, accents, overlapping speech, rapid conversation, and specialist vocabulary.
- It should not replace a qualified interpreter in high-stakes situations.
- Apple’s requirements include firmware, software, language, device, and regional dependencies; do not assume that all processing is exclusively on the AirPods or entirely offline.
Bottom line
The iOS 19 AirPods translation story was a genuine 2025 report, but it is no longer the correct way to describe Apple’s current offering. Apple shipped the idea as Live Translation with AirPods in iOS 26. Compatible AirPods include AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 and later, and AirPods Max 2, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
