Originally published March 7, 2024. Apple released macOS Sonoma 14.4, watchOS 10.4, tvOS 17.4, HomePod Software 17.4, and visionOS 1.1 on March 7, 2024. The rollout brought modest visible changes but important security and bug fixes—especially for Mac and Apple Watch owners.
This is a historical release roundup, not current software advice. In 2026, install the newest compatible version offered by Apple’s Software Update system rather than searching for macOS 14.4 or watchOS 10.4.
What Apple released on March 7, 2024
Apple’s release listing included these updates:

iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 arrived two days earlier, on March 5. Those releases were particularly significant in the European Union because of Apple’s Digital Markets Act changes. Those iPhone and iPad changes should not be confused with features in macOS Sonoma 14.4. Apple’s release listing provides the platform-by-platform context.
What changed in macOS Sonoma 14.4?
macOS Sonoma 14.4 was not a dramatic redesign. Its most visible additions were small interface and usability improvements, while its security fixes were the more consequential reason to install it at the time.

New emoji
The update added the mushroom, phoenix, lime, broken chain, and shaking-head emoji. It also added support for reversing the direction of 18 people and body emoji. Apple’s macOS Sonoma 14 release notes contain the full feature list.
More useful Podcast transcripts
Podcast transcripts became more practical in Sonoma 14.4. Users could read an episode’s text in full, search for words or phrases, and select text to jump to a particular point in the episode. Transcripts also worked with accessibility features such as Text Size, Increase Contrast, and VoiceOver.
That makes the change more than a cosmetic transcript display: it improves navigation, content discovery, and accessibility for long episodes.
Messages for Business notifications
Messages for Business added opt-in updates from participating businesses, including order-status notifications, flight notifications, fraud alerts, and other transaction-related messages.

This feature is limited by the business, region, and the user’s previous opt-in. It is not a universal messaging channel for every company.
Safari Favorites Bar icons
Safari added an option to show only website icons in the Favorites Bar. The compact view can fit more bookmarks and reduce visual clutter.

Managed Mac changes
For organizations managing Macs with mobile-device-management tools, Sonoma 14.4 allowed MDM systems to report battery health on Apple-silicon Macs. Apple also changed how software-update declarations behave when the same operating-system version is declared again. Details are available in Apple’s enterprise release notes.
What changed in watchOS 10.4?
watchOS 10.4 was primarily a targeted usability, security, and reliability update—not a major redesign of the Apple Watch experience.

When Tap to Show Full Notification is enabled, watchOS 10.4 changed the behavior so a double tap could expand the notification.
This should not be confused with the separate Double Tap gesture introduced for supported newer Apple Watch models in watchOS 10.1. The notification setting and the hardware-dependent Double Tap feature are related in name but are not the same capability.
Apple Pay with AssistiveTouch
When Apple Pay is used with Confirm with AssistiveTouch, watchOS 10.4 requires a passcode for additional security. In this configuration, double-clicking the side button is not supported.
That change matters most to people who rely on AssistiveTouch or accessibility-focused Apple Watch workflows: it improves protection but can add friction to Apple Pay authentication.

False-touch and contact-sync fixes
Apple said watchOS 10.4 addressed an issue that could cause false touches on the display and fixed a problem that prevented contacts from syncing to Apple Watch for some users. These statements describe the specific software issues Apple addressed; they do not establish that every ghost-touch or contact-sync problem had the same cause.
If false touches continued, other possibilities included hardware damage, moisture, a screen protector, or a different software issue.

tvOS 17.4, HomePod Software 17.4, and visionOS 1.1
HomePod Software 17.4
HomePod Software 17.4 allowed Siri to learn a user’s preferred media service, reducing the need to name the music app in every request. Apple also described performance and stability improvements.
The behavior could vary by service, language, and region, so it should not be interpreted as making every third-party music service equally capable.
tvOS 17.4
tvOS 17.4 was part of the broader maintenance rollout for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. Apple’s public release information did not present it as a major feature release; performance, stability, and security maintenance were the practical focus.

visionOS 1.1
visionOS 1.1 was the first major post-launch update for Apple Vision Pro. It belongs in the March 7 release group, but its changes should not be presented as macOS or watchOS features.
Why the security fixes mattered
Apple’s macOS Sonoma 14.4 security advisory documented fixes affecting several areas, including:
- Accessibility notifications and private-data redaction
- Privilege elevation
- Exposure of location information
- Keystroke observation
- Code-signing and protected-filesystem restrictions
- Bluetooth keyboard spoofing and keystroke injection
- Memory handling in ColorSync
- Bluetooth microphone access
In practical terms, the advisory covered issues that could expose sensitive information, weaken system protections, observe keystrokes, or permit code execution in specific circumstances.
Apple’s advisory describes vulnerability impact and remediation. It should not be read as proof that every user was attacked. Also avoid relying on a fixed vulnerability total: advisory entries can be added or revised after release, so any count requires a publication date and a clearly stated counting method.
Which devices were supported?
- watchOS 10.4: Apple Watch Series 4 and later.
- macOS Sonoma 14.4: Macs compatible with macOS Sonoma.
- tvOS 17.4: Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.
- visionOS 1.1: Apple Vision Pro.
For Mac, model-specific compatibility is safer than using a generic cutoff year. Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update. Apple says Software Update presents only software compatible with that Mac model. See Apple’s software-update guidance.

Mac
- Open Apple menu → System Settings.
- Choose General → Software Update.
- Wait for Software Update to check for releases.
- Select Update, Upgrade, or Restart Now, depending on the control shown.
- Enter an administrator password if requested.
Back up important data first. Keep the Mac connected to power where practical, and do not interrupt the installation. A restart, progress bar, or temporarily blank screen can be normal during the process.

Apple Watch
- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Choose General → Software Update.
- Keep the watch on its charger and within range of the iPhone while the update is prepared and installed.
Apple Watch owners should also check the changed Apple Pay and AssistiveTouch behavior before updating if that is part of their daily accessibility workflow.
If the update did not appear or failed
On Mac, first confirm that the hardware supports the target release and check System Settings → General → Software Update again. A restart can refresh the update check. If the Mac is unsupported, Software Update will not offer Sonoma 14.4. Network problems, insufficient storage, or an organization’s management policy can also prevent an update from appearing or completing.
On Apple Watch, keep the watch charging, confirm that the paired iPhone is sufficiently up to date, and check the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection. Do not interrupt an installation showing a progress indicator.
These are practical troubleshooting steps rather than claims that every failure was documented in Apple’s release notes.
The important follow-up: macOS Sonoma 14.4.1
Apple released macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 on March 25, 2024. It fixed issues including external USB hubs attached to displays not being recognized, copy-protected Audio Unit plug-ins failing to open or validate, and Java-containing applications quitting unexpectedly. Apple’s Sonoma release notes document the follow-up fixes.
This is why a retrospective account should not stop at “install 14.4.” Users who encountered those problems needed 14.4.1 or a later Sonoma release.
Should you install macOS 14.4 or watchOS 10.4 now?
For a reader in March 2024: generally yes. The security maintenance justified updating, provided Mac users checked critical applications, professional audio plug-ins, external displays, drivers, and specialized hardware first. Apple Watch users who depended on AssistiveTouch and Apple Pay needed to understand the new passcode requirement.
For a reader in 2026: no—do not seek out these historical versions as though they were current. Install the newest compatible release offered by Apple’s Software Update system. Compatibility, enterprise policy, and application support can affect which version appears on a particular device.
