Turn the Apple Watch face down, press and hold the band-release button, then slide the band horizontally out of its channel. Do not pull the band straight away from the case, twist it, pry against the watch, or force a stuck connector.
For most Apple Watch models, removal requires no tool. Work over a clean microfiber cloth or soft padded mat, and test any replacement band carefully before wearing it.
What you need before removing the band
- Remove the watch from your wrist.
- Place it face down on a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth or soft padded surface, as Apple recommends.
- Remove a protective case if it blocks access to the release button.
- Have the replacement band nearby if you are changing bands.
- If you have a Link Bracelet, separate it into two pieces before detaching it from the watch.
No special tool is required. Avoid sharp objects, metal tools, lubricants, solvents, and household cleaners around the release mechanism.
Where is the Apple Watch band-release button?
The release buttons are on the back of the watch case, beside the band channels. There is normally one button for each half of the band. The button must remain pressed while the band is slid sideways; pressing the button without sliding the band will not remove it.

How to remove a standard Apple Watch band
- Turn the watch over. Place the display face down on the soft surface.
- Find the release button. Look beside the band channel on the back of the case.
- Press and hold the button. Use a fingertip and keep the button fully depressed.
- Slide the band sideways. Move it parallel to the long edge of the watch. Do not pull it directly away from the case.
- Release the button once the band section is free.
- Repeat on the other side if you are removing the complete band.
Apple’s general procedure is to hold the band-release button and slide the band across to remove it. If it does not move, do not increase the force.
How to install a replacement band
- Check that the band belongs to the correct case-size family.
- Orient it correctly. Apple’s instructions say the text on the band should face you during insertion.
- Slide the connector horizontally into the channel. Do not push it down into the slot.
- Continue until it clicks into place.
- Without pressing the release button, gently tug the band to confirm that it stays fixed and does not slide freely.
If there is no click, Apple advises sliding the band left and right to center it, pushing it into place, and carefully wiggling it up and down. If it still does not lock securely, do not wear the watch.

These are case-size groups, not wrist-size measurements. The case size determines whether the connector fits; an S/M or M/L band selection determines wrist fit.
Apple also states that bands designed for Apple Watch Ultra models are compatible with 44mm and 45mm cases, but its guidance limits those smaller-case combinations to casual, everyday use rather than rugged activities. Physical compatibility is not the same as suitability for diving, climbing, or other high-impact use.

Band-specific removal instructions
Link Bracelet
Separate the bracelet before removing it from the watch:
- Close the butterfly clasp if it is open.
- Press one quick-release button on the inside of the bracelet.
- Gently pull the bracelet apart into two sections.
- Use the normal watch-case release button to slide each section out separately.
Only one quick-release button needs to be held while separating the bracelet. Do not twist or force the links.
Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop
These bands detach from the watch case in the ordinary way: press the case release button and slide the connector out. To remove one from your wrist, stretch the lower portion over your hand. Apple warns that the material should be stretched from the bottom when putting it on or taking it off.
Milanese Loop
Redesigned Milanese Loops from 2018 onward can open fully because the magnetic closure slides through the band connector. Older designs may not allow the closure to pass through the connector. Either way, detaching the band from the case still uses the standard release button and sliding motion.

Ocean Band, Alpine Loop, and Trail Loop
Open or adjust each band’s wrist closure first—the titanium buckle, loops, or pull tab, depending on the design. Then detach the band from the case using the standard release button. The wrist closure and the case-release mechanism are separate.
Modern Buckle
The Modern Buckle opens using release buttons on the sides of its magnetic closure. Those buttons open the band around your wrist; they are not the band-release buttons on the back of the watch case.
Titanium Milanese Loop
Keep the buckle parallel to the band while adjusting it. That adjustment is separate from removing the band connector from the watch case.
What to do if the band is stuck
Use this conservative sequence:
- Confirm that you are pressing the correct case-release button.
- Press it fully and keep holding it while sliding.
- Push the band slightly farther into the channel, then try sliding it out again.
- Try the opposite sliding direction.
- Gently rock the band left and right with only light horizontal pressure.
- Remove a case or accessory that may be blocking the button.
Apple specifically warns against forcing the band. Stop immediately if the connector, case, finish, or button begins to bend, scratch, or deform.

If the release button will not move
Do not insert a needle, knife, screwdriver, SIM tool, or other sharp object. Do not apply oil, lubricant, solvents, or household cleaners. Remove the watch from your wrist, remove its case, and brush away visible loose debris with a clean, soft, dry brush. Try the normal button-and-slide procedure once more without increasing force. If the button remains immobile or the band is wedged, seek Apple or qualified repair assistance.
Stuck-band reports in Apple Community discussion and another community thread are anecdotal, not Apple-approved repair instructions.
If the band was inserted backward or at an angle
Do not yank it out. Hold the release button down and slide the band back along the channel. If it will not release, center it and gently wiggle it while maintaining button pressure.
If it is a third-party band
A connector may bind because of incorrect dimensions, a burr, a bent lug, or coating buildup. Apple warns that third-party bands may fit improperly, interfere with Wrist Detection, cause material or skin concerns, or damage the watch. Do not sacrifice the watch to save an inexpensive band; professional service is safer if the connector is visibly distorted or the release button cannot be pressed.

How to tell whether the replacement is secure
- The connector should be fully seated and should normally click into place.
- The band should not slide freely from side to side.
- A gentle pull, made without pressing the release button, should not dislodge it.
- If it fails any of these checks, do not wear the watch—especially during exercise, water use, climbing, or other activities where losing it could be dangerous.
Cleaning after removal
Follow the care instructions for the specific band material. For Apple-branded bands, Apple’s user-guide material recommends a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with fresh water when appropriate. Dry the band thoroughly before reattaching it.
Do not soak leather; Apple identifies leather bands as not water resistant. Avoid treating alcohol, disinfectant, compressed air, lubricants, or household detergents as universally safe across all materials. Remove the band before cleaning the watch, and never reattach a wet band. See Apple’s band cleaning and care guidance for material-specific instructions.
Choosing a replacement band
Buy based on more than connector fit: consider wrist adjustment, material, closure, intended activity, and whether the band can be cleaned easily.
