Apple’s reported push toward thinner products has partly become reality: Apple Watch Series 10 arrived in 2024 with a thinner case, and the iPhone 17 Air followed in 2025 as Apple’s thinnest iPhone. The MacBook Pro part is still prospective. The original June 2024 report described a design ambition, not an official product roadmap, and the later launches show that Apple pursued thinness selectively rather than making every model in each family slimmer.
What Apple’s 2024 thin-device report actually said
On June 17, 2024, BGR summarized a Bloomberg report that Apple wanted future devices—including an iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro—to become substantially thinner and lighter, with an ambition to make them among the thinnest and lightest in their categories. BGR’s account of the Bloomberg report was reporting about Apple’s direction, not an Apple announcement.
At the time, names, dimensions, battery capacities, ports, and product timing were not established. Nor did the report establish that every model in each product family would change. The later evidence points to one especially thin iPhone, a thinner standard Apple Watch, and a MacBook Pro redesign that has not yet been confirmed by Apple.
Apple Watch Series 10 made thinness tangible first
Apple announced Apple Watch Series 10 on September 9, 2024, and called it the thinnest Apple Watch yet. Apple said its case was nearly 10% thinner than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9; its technical specifications list a depth of 9.7 mm. It came in 42 mm and 46 mm case sizes. The redesign was not simply a smaller watch. Series 10 has a larger display and a wider aspect ratio, while Apple says a new S10 SiP and redesigned metal back—with the antenna integrated into the housing—helped enable the thinner construction. Apple retained an advertised 18-hour battery-life rating. That is Apple’s stated rating, not a guarantee of every wearer’s real-world endurance.
Apple listed a U.S. starting price of $399 at launch in September 2024. That is a historical launch price, not a current-price quote. The Series 10 is the clearest example of the report’s wearable direction, but it does not mean the more rugged Apple Watch Ultra followed the same design approach.

iPhone 17 Air turned the iPhone prediction into a specific model
On September 9, 2025, Apple introduced the iPhone 17 Air, a design-focused member of the iPhone 17 family measuring 5.6 mm thick. Bloomberg described it as roughly one-third thinner than Apple’s contemporary standard handsets. Bloomberg’s launch coverage reported a $999 launch price. The 5.6 mm figure belongs to the Air, not to every iPhone 17 model.
The Air is strong follow-up evidence for the 2024 report’s iPhone direction, but thinness is a design choice rather than a universal upgrade. A buyer comparing it with other iPhone 17 models should weigh battery endurance, camera versatility, price, and handling alongside the slimmer profile. The original report does not establish the Air’s battery capacity or prove that its thinness necessarily reduces battery life; those claims require model-specific specifications or reliable testing.

Historical comparisons help put the design in context, but should not be mistaken for current specifications: the earlier BGR account cited approximately 7.8 mm for the standard iPhone 15, 8.25 mm for the iPhone 15 Pro, and 6.9 mm for the iPhone 6. The 5.6 mm Air is thinner than those cited examples, though a camera bump can affect how uniformly thin a phone feels in use.
The MacBook Pro redesign remains a report, not a launched product
Apple continued updating MacBook Pro models after the 2024 story. Bloomberg covered M5-series MacBook Pro models in March 2026, focusing on performance and configuration changes rather than a completed ultra-thin redesign: Bloomberg’s March 2026 coverage and its hands-on report.

Later reporting points to a possible redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with a thinner chassis, OLED displays, and touchscreen functionality, potentially arriving in late 2026 or early 2027. Those features and timing remain unconfirmed expectations, not Apple specifications or a guaranteed release window. MacRumors’ reporting roundup covers the forecast.
A professional laptop has different constraints from a phone or watch. Sustained workloads depend on cooling and power delivery; a thinner chassis would have to balance those with battery capacity, ports, speakers, and structural strength. Until Apple announces a product, there is no confirmed thickness, port layout, release date, or M6 Pro or M6 Max specification to plan around. Buyers who need a Mac now should compare available models on performance, memory, display, and connectivity rather than assume a future redesign will arrive on a particular date.

Why thinness can matter—and what it can cost
Apple has not publicly explained the 2024 report as a single synchronized program. A reasonable design analysis is that thinness is visible differentiation in mature product categories, where improvements in speed alone may be harder to notice. Integration can also free space for a larger display, new components, or a different internal layout. Series 10’s integrated antenna housing is a documented example of a specific engineering change; it does not prove that all Apple products use the same solution.
The trade-offs depend on the device. A thinner enclosure may limit room for batteries, camera assemblies, cooling systems, ports, speakers, or repair access, but the exterior thickness alone cannot establish the actual effect. Better component efficiency can offset some space constraints, and strength depends on materials and construction as well as dimensions. Claims that a thin product must have poor battery life, weak durability, or limited performance need product-specific evidence.
- Battery: Compare official endurance ratings and independent real-world testing for the exact model. A rating such as the Series 10’s advertised 18 hours is not equivalent to a guaranteed daily result.
- Cameras: If camera versatility is a priority, compare sensor and lens configurations rather than assuming a thin phone matches a thicker Pro model.
- Heat and sustained performance: Laptop buyers should look for workload testing and cooling details, not infer performance from chassis thickness.
- Ports and accessories: Check the actual connector layout, display support, charging setup, and compatibility with existing cases, bands, docks, and cables. The 2024 report does not establish that Apple will remove USB-C.
- Durability and service: Look for documented drop testing, repair assessments, and service information. Thinness alone does not settle how robust or repairable a product is.
How to decide whether to buy or wait
- If you want a lighter-feeling standard Apple Watch: Series 10’s thinner case and larger display are concrete design changes; consider whether its battery rating and features suit your routine.
- If you prioritize phone thinness: Compare the iPhone 17 Air with other iPhone 17 models on camera needs, endurance, and price. Do not treat the Air’s dimensions as the dimensions of the whole lineup.
- If you need a professional laptop now: Choose based on current performance, memory, screen, and ports. The future thinner/OLED MacBook Pro is still a reported possibility with uncertain timing.
- If you are considering an upgrade mainly for a future redesign: Waiting may make sense if a thinner MacBook Pro or OLED/touchscreen features are essential to you, but the timing and final specifications are not confirmed.
