Yes. An automatic field watch is accurate enough for commuting, appointments, work and general time awareness, provided you accept that it will gain or lose seconds each day and will need occasional resetting. Mechanical watches are not quartz-precise: the Japan Clock & Watch Association says their rate can vary from several seconds per day to several tens of seconds per day. A well-adjusted or chronometer-certified movement can be tighter, while an entry-level automatic may need more frequent correction. If exact seconds matter, choose quartz. If you value mechanical operation, legibility and rugged daily wear, an automatic field watch is practical when you measure its actual rate and plan around its drift.
What accuracy should you expect from an automatic field watch?
Expect a measured gain or loss in seconds per day, not perfect synchronization. The useful question is whether the watch stays within a drift you can live with during your normal week.

| Reference | Stated or typical rate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Japan Clock & Watch Association (2026 page; publication year not stated) | Several seconds per day to several tens of seconds per day for mechanical watches | A broad description covering many mechanical movements and conditions |
| Quartz watches | About ±20 seconds per month | Usually far less correction than a mechanical watch |
| Longines typical mechanical accuracy | About ±5 seconds per day | A tighter target than many basic automatic movements |
| Chronometer certification described by Longines | -4/+6 seconds per day | A documented certified tolerance, not a promise that every watch runs at the midpoint |
| Seiko 6R21 instruction | Factory-adjusted +25/-15 seconds per day at 5–35 °C | A specification measured under stated conditions; wrist performance can differ |
| Venezianico V5000 example (June 1, 2026 guide) | Approximately ±3 seconds per day | An example of a more tightly regulated movement |
| Seiko NH35 derivatives in the same guide | -20/+40 seconds per day | An example of the wider spread possible in common entry-level automatic derivatives |
These figures are tolerances or typical values, not guarantees for a particular watch. Two watches with the same calibre can show different rates because of regulation, position, temperature, winding state and wear patterns. Judge your own watch over several days rather than assuming a catalogue number describes its exact behavior.
What does “seconds per day” mean in practice?
A daily rate is the average amount a watch gains or loses over a measurement period. A watch that gains 10 seconds per day will be about five minutes fast after 30 days if the rate remains steady; one losing 15 seconds per day will be about seven and a half minutes slow. The actual total can vary because the rate changes with conditions.

Do not treat one unusually fast or slow day as the watch’s true accuracy. Grand Seiko advises judging mean values after one week to ten days, rather than from only one day. This averaging smooths out changes caused by winding, position and activity.
Why does an automatic watch gain or lose time?
The balance wheel and hairspring regulate the watch, but their motion is affected by energy, gravity, temperature and outside forces. The following factors explain most day-to-day variation.
Winding state
A fully wound mainspring generally delivers steadier torque. As the spring unwinds toward the end of its power reserve, the balance may receive less consistent energy and the rate can shift. Wearing a self-winding watch for more than eight hours, as Seiko recommends, helps maintain winding during ordinary activity, although it does not guarantee a particular rate.
Position
Gravity acts differently when the watch is dial-up, dial-down, crown-up or in another vertical position. Friction and tiny balance errors can make the watch gain in one resting position and lose in another. Overnight storage can therefore change the next day’s result even when the watch was worn identically.
Temperature
Metal components expand and contract as temperature changes. Seiko notes that high temperatures normally make a mechanical watch lose time and low temperatures make it gain. The stated 6R21 tolerance is specifically tied to 5–35 °C, so performance outside that range should not be compared directly with the factory figure.

Magnetism
Phones, speakers, tablet covers, hair dryers and electric razors can magnetize parts of a movement. A sudden, persistent gain or loss—especially after contact with a strong magnetic source—is a reason to have the watch demagnetized or examined. Magnetism is different from ordinary gradual drift: the rate may change abruptly and remain substantially off.
Shock and vibration
A hard impact can disturb regulating components or damage delicate pivots. Remove the watch for high-impact sport, hammering or activities where it may strike a surface. A rate change immediately after a knock deserves inspection rather than repeated manual corrections.
Wearing habits and measurement conditions
Arm movement, how fully the watch winds, when it is removed and where it rests all affect the result. A rate measured on a desk for two days may not match the rate during a full week on the wrist. Record conditions along with the time so you can distinguish a stable pattern from a one-off result.
How do you measure the accuracy of your own automatic watch?
Use a reliable time signal and a log covering at least seven days. The goal is an average daily rate under normal use, not a single impressive reading.
- Synchronize the watch. Set it against a trusted time signal and note the exact reference time to the second.
- Start from a known winding state. If practical, fully wind the watch according to its instructions, then wear it normally. Record whether you hand-wound it and how long it was worn each day.
- Check at the same time each day. Compare the watch with the same time signal and write down whether it is fast or slow, including the number of seconds.
- Continue for seven to ten days. Keep the watch in ordinary use. Note unusual heat, a hard impact, prolonged inactivity or suspected magnet exposure.
- Calculate the mean rate. Subtract the starting difference from the final difference and divide by the number of elapsed days. A positive result is a gain; a negative result is a loss.
- Repeat if the result is surprising. A second week helps confirm whether the first result reflected a temporary position or winding effect.
- Compare like with like. Check the average against the movement’s stated tolerance, including its temperature and test-condition qualifications.
For example, if a watch starts 2 seconds slow and ends 68 seconds fast after eight days, its net change is 70 seconds, or 8.75 seconds gained per day. That average is more meaningful than any single daily reading.

Is a Seiko field watch accurate enough for work?
Usually, yes, if your work allows a small amount of drift. The Seiko 5 Sports Field SRPG35 is a useful example: its 4R36 movement is automatic with manual winding, offers approximately 41 hours of power reserve, has 10-bar water resistance, 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance, a nylon strap and 20 mm lugs.
| SRPG35 specification | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| 4R36 automatic movement with manual winding | You can keep it running through wrist motion or supplement winding by hand |
| Approximately 41-hour power reserve | It may stop after roughly a day and a half off the wrist, depending on winding and condition |
| 10-bar water resistance | Suitable for ordinary wet-weather and recreational-water exposure when seals are in good condition; follow Seiko’s instructions |
| 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance | Published resistance level, not immunity from every magnetic field |
| 20 mm lugs and nylon strap | Compatible with a 20 mm nylon NATO-style replacement strap |
Those specifications do not establish the daily rate of an individual SRPG35. A particular example may run faster or slower within the movement’s guidance. Measure it over a week or more; if your job requires the second hand to agree with a reference clock, quartz is a safer choice.
Do you need to reset an automatic watch every day?
No. Most owners reset when the accumulated difference becomes inconvenient, not on a fixed daily schedule. The right interval depends on the watch’s measured rate and your tolerance for drift.
| Approximate steady rate | Accumulated difference in 30 days | Likely routine |
|---|---|---|
| 5 seconds/day | About 2.5 minutes | Reset every few weeks or before an important event |
| 10 seconds/day | About 5 minutes | Weekly or biweekly correction for people who need close timing |
| 20 seconds/day | About 10 minutes | Frequent correction if schedules depend on exact minutes |
| 30 seconds/day | About 15 minutes | Consider regulation, service or quartz if this drift is unacceptable |
Resetting is also sensible after the watch has stopped and been restarted, after travel across time zones, or before an appointment where a few minutes matter. If the watch is only used for approximate time awareness, a modest accumulated difference may never be disruptive.

Should you buy quartz instead of an automatic?
Choose based on correction tolerance, not on the word “field.” A field-style case and clear numerals improve readability and durability, but they do not change the underlying mechanical rate.

| Priority | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Least correction and dependable minute-level timing | Quartz | Less mechanical interaction and traditional movement character |
| Mechanical watch with a documented tighter tolerance | Chronometer-certified mechanical watch | Higher cost is common, and certification still describes a range rather than zero drift |
| Mechanical character, legibility and robust everyday wear | Ordinary automatic field watch | Expect seconds-per-day drift and periodic resetting |
| Ability to keep running after desk time or light activity | Automatic with manual winding | Hand-winding does not by itself guarantee better regulation |
Longines describes typical mechanical accuracy around ±5 seconds per day and chronometer certification at -4/+6 seconds per day. Those tighter figures are useful when comparing movements, but they remain different from quartz’s roughly ±20 seconds per month.
How can you keep an automatic field watch as consistent as possible?
You cannot eliminate mechanical drift, but consistent handling makes the rate easier to predict.
- Wear the watch regularly and for more than eight hours when possible so the rotor can maintain the mainspring’s charge.
- Keep the measurement and daily routine similar when evaluating accuracy; changing between desk storage and active wear can change the positional average.
- Store it away from speakers, magnetic tablet covers, hair dryers and electric razors.
- Remove it during high-impact sport or work that exposes it to repeated shocks.
- Avoid leaving it in unusually hot or cold locations, such as a car dashboard or an unheated shed.
- Record the rate after a major event—impact, strong heat exposure or suspected magnetism—rather than assuming the previous measurement still applies.
When should an automatic watch be demagnetized, regulated or serviced?
Seek help when the rate changes suddenly, remains far outside the stated tolerance, or the watch stops, rattles or shows other mechanical symptoms. A demagnetizer may correct a magnetized movement, but persistent error after demagnetizing points to regulation or service rather than more frequent resetting.

Seiko recommends taking a self-winding watch to a service center about once every three years for examination, cleaning and oiling where needed. Service intervals are maintenance guidance, not a promise that the watch will remain within a particular daily rate until that date. Water-resistance seals and the movement’s lubrication condition can both change with age.
What should you check before choosing an automatic field watch?
Use four comparison axes and give each a weight that matches your routine.

- Stated daily-rate tolerance: Find the movement’s actual guidance, including temperature range and whether the figure is factory adjustment or a typical result.
- Certification: Distinguish chronometer certification from a manufacturer’s internal adjustment. Certification documents a test tolerance; it does not make the watch quartz-accurate.

- Maintenance and resetting burden: Decide how often you are willing to check the watch, reset it and pay for inspection or servicing.
For office work, commuting and outdoor errands, an ordinary automatic field watch is generally sufficient. For laboratory timing, transport operations, medical dosing or any task where seconds are safety-critical, choose a quartz instrument or a mechanical watch with a documented certified tolerance only if its remaining drift is still acceptable for the task.
What is the practical verdict for everyday wear?
An automatic field watch is accurate enough when “on time” means staying within a few minutes over a normal interval and you are willing to check and reset it periodically. Measure the specific watch for seven to ten days, use its average daily rate to plan corrections, protect it from magnetism and shocks, and follow the maker’s service guidance. Buy quartz when correction itself is a nuisance; buy a chronometer-certified mechanical model when you want a tighter, documented mechanical range; choose an ordinary automatic field watch when the mechanical experience matters more than second-level precision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an automatic watch stop if I leave it on a desk?
Yes. A self-winding watch depends on stored mainspring energy, so it can stop after its power reserve is exhausted while unworn. Restart it according to the manufacturer’s winding and setting instructions, then set it against a reliable time signal.
Does a stronger magnetic-resistance rating make demagnetizing unnecessary?
No rating makes a movement immune to every magnetic field. If the watch develops a sudden, persistent gain or loss after contact with electronics or a magnetic accessory, have it checked rather than relying on the printed resistance figure.
Is a chronometer mechanical watch as accurate as quartz?
No. Chronometer certification documents a tighter mechanical tolerance, such as the -4/+6 seconds-per-day range described by Longines, but quartz is specified at roughly ±20 seconds per month by the Japan Clock & Watch Association. Mechanical watches still require occasional correction.
Will changing to a NATO strap change the watch’s rate?
The strap itself does not regulate the movement. A different strap can change how securely or actively you wear the watch, and that change in wearing pattern may alter winding and positional averages, so recheck the rate after a major routine change.
