Not reliably, as a category. A production limit can create scarcity, but scarcity alone does not prove that buyers exist at a higher price later, that a watch will sell quickly, or that the owner will end up with a profit after costs. The evidence available as of October 2026 shows an active secondary market and some very high auction results. It does not show typical long-term returns for limited-edition watches, net of fees. Buy a limited edition because you want to own that watch, and treat any appreciation as an uncertain bonus.
What “limited edition” does and does not guarantee
A limited edition is a marketing and production decision. The maker chooses how many pieces to build, and that number is often printed on the dial, caseback or documentation. It does not oblige anyone to pay more for the watch later. Many limited runs sell out at retail and then trade close to retail, and some trade below it. Other runs find no strong buyer pool at all, because the design appeals to a narrow group of collectors.
The useful question is therefore not “Is it limited?” but “Who would pay for this exact reference, how often do they do so, and at what price?” A limit of 500 pieces means little if only a few dozen people want that model.
What the published figures show, and what they cannot show
Four widely cited figures from 2024 are often used to argue that limited-edition watches are a store of value. Each measures something real, but none of them measures the return an ordinary owner should expect.

| Listings worth $700 million used in an annual report | Bezel, 2024 | The value of listings for sought-after watches and brands on the platform’s data set | Completed sales, sale prices, appreciation, or profit after costs |
| 29% of attempted listings rejected (24% in the first half, 33% in the second) | Bezel, 2024 | The platform’s own rejection rate during 2024 | A market-wide rejection rate or a counterfeit rate for watches in general |
| $13.3 million total for the June 2024 New York Important Watches sale, with the top lot, a limited-edition Richard Mille RM56-02 AO Tourbillon Sapphire, selling for more than $3 million | Christie’s, 2024 | Results of one auction sale, led by one very rare high-end piece | The likely outcome for a typical limited edition or any other model |
| More than US$200 million in annual auction totals for four consecutive years, with an F.P. Journe record highlighted | Phillips, 2024 announcement | Activity at that auction house over several years | Returns for individual owners or limited editions in general |
The pattern is consistent. The figures describe how much money and attention moves through the top of the market. They do not describe what happens to a watch bought at retail and sold two or five years later.
Why headline auction results mislead
A top lot at a major auction is selected by the auction house for its rarity, provenance and condition, and it is sold to a buyer who can afford to pay a premium. Those conditions are not available to most owners. When a single piece makes several million dollars, it shows that exceptional demand exists for exceptional pieces. It cannot be turned into an expected return on a watch from the same brand that retailed at a fraction of that price.

- Materials: gold plated steel, mineral glass
- Features: chronograph function men's watch with quartz movement, featuring a gold-plated steel bracelet, with folding clasp. The watch case measures 42mm, with a thickness of 11.35mm. It surrounds a blue dial characterized by golden details and mounts a resistant mineral glass.
- Water resistance: The watch has a water resistance of up to 10 ATM
- Packaging: Maserati special packaging and 2-year guarantee
Survivorship bias compounds the problem. Auction catalogues are full of pieces that sold well. Watches that were bought at retail, held for years, and sold for less than the purchase price rarely appear in headlines, so the public record overstates what a typical owner experiences.
Listings are not sales
Platform data is useful for understanding what is being offered and at what asking price. It is not the same as a transaction record. An asking price may be revised, withdrawn or never met. A listing also does not reveal the fees the seller paid, the condition adjustment the buyer demanded, or the number of months the watch sat unsold. Before treating any listing price as a value, check whether comparable pieces have actually sold at that level.

Authentication and originality change the answer
Bezel reported that it rejected 29% of listings submitted to its platform in 2024, rising from 24% in the first half to 33% in the second. That is the platform’s own filtering result. It is not evidence about how common counterfeit or misrepresented watches are across the whole market, and readers should not read it that way. It does show that a meaningful share of submitted pieces did not clear a checking process, which is a reason to treat provenance as a core part of the purchase rather than an afterthought.
For a limited edition, originality carries extra weight. A watch whose dial, hands, bracelet or movement have been replaced may trade at a discount to an unmodified example, and some buyers will refuse it entirely. Papers, box, service history and the original purchase receipt can affect the exit price as much as the reference itself.

How to judge the net exit of a specific watch
Use the following sequence before paying a premium above retail for any limited edition.
- Identify the exact reference. Record the model name, reference number, dial and bracelet variant, and production year. Two watches sold under the same name can trade at very different levels.
- Pull completed sales of that reference. Look at recent sold prices, not current asking prices, and note how many sales occurred in the past twelve months. A handful of sales is a weak signal.
- Estimate a realistic sale price. Adjust the median completed price for the condition, completeness and originality of the watch you intend to buy or own.
- Deduct selling costs. Include the marketplace or dealer commission, any authentication or shipping charges, and any payment fees. Published category-wide cost figures were not available, so use the actual fee schedule of the channel you would sell through.
- Add the cost of ownership. Include the manufacturer’s service cost, which may be due every few years, and insurance if you carry it.
- Estimate time to sell. If the watch might take months to find a buyer, the opportunity cost matters, and a falling market can erase a gain while you wait.
- Compare the net figure with what you pay. Include any retail premium or dealer markup at purchase. If the net figure is below your purchase price, the watch needs to justify itself as something you will wear and enjoy.
Six questions to weigh before buying
| Factor | Question to answer | Evidence to gather |
|---|---|---|
| Demonstrated demand | Do buyers pay for this exact reference? | Completed sales of the same reference, not the limited-edition label |
| Liquidity | How quickly can it be sold? | Number and recency of credible sales, and typical time to sell |
| Net proceeds | What remains after costs? | Actual fee schedules and realistic sale price |
| Condition and originality | Is the watch complete and unmodified? | Service records, original components, papers and provenance |
| Authenticity and recourse | Who verifies the watch, and what happens if it is misrepresented? | Independent or platform authentication, seller reputation, and the buyer protections offered |
| Purchase price and personal use | Would you still be satisfied if the resale value fell? | Your own estimate of the watch’s value to you, separate from any resale expectation |
These factors are a way to organise a decision, not a scoring system with a validated pass mark. No representative study of returns by brand, price tier, edition size and holding period has been published in the sources reviewed, so no threshold can be presented as proven.

What remains unknown
The question of typical long-term, net-of-fee returns for limited-edition watches is not answered by the material available. Auction records and platform listing figures cannot stand in for that measurement. A reader who wants a quantitative answer should look for a published series of completed sales across many references and holding periods, and should be cautious about any source that presents one exceptional sale as a typical outcome.
Until such evidence exists, the sensible approach is to buy only what you would be content to own at a lower resale price, verify the exact reference and its condition, and assume that a limited edition is a watch first and an asset second.
