The Audemars Piguet 5043BC is a vintage white-gold dress watch built around Calibre 2003, a manual-winding movement just 1.64 mm thick. AP’s 1972 archive leaflet identifies Model 5043 as an “ultra-thin” watch equipped with that calibre. “Ultra-Thin” is descriptive rather than part of the formal reference name, but it has a period basis in AP’s own material.
What is the Audemars Piguet 5043BC?
Reference 5043BC belongs to Audemars Piguet’s very thin dress-watch lineage. The official AP archive preserves a 1972 leaflet for Model 5043 and calls it an ultra-thin wristwatch equipped with Calibre 2003. The leaflet illustrates a yellow-gold variant, so it documents the model family and movement rather than the specific white-gold BC configuration.
The “Ultra-Thin” wording warrants a distinction: specialist publication Fratello says it is not the official model name, while AP itself used “ultra-thin” descriptively in its period material. The clearest name for the watch is therefore Audemars Piguet 5043BC or reference 5043BC.
What does the 5043BC look like?
Fratello’s reported 5043BC example is an 18K white-gold watch with a white lacquer dial, black printed indices, a cambered mineral crystal and a snap-in white-gold caseback. Its compact, exceptionally slim proportions suit a restrained dress-watch design.

These are measurements and specifications for the example Fratello documented, not a complete official technical sheet for every 5043BC. Individual watches and configurations can differ. Fratello also describes the watch on a black leather strap with a white-gold pin buckle, or on a seven-row Gay Frères white-gold bracelet; it notes that bracelets were optional, not universal original equipment. Confirm the lug width on the individual watch before ordering a replacement strap.
Why Calibre 2003 matters
Calibre 2003 succeeded Calibre 9ML, a movement of similar dimensions made by Louis Elisée Piguet. AP says it bought 774 9ML blanks between 1938 and 1952, and that Maurice Audemars developed the Calibre 2003 blank at LeCoultre & Cie under reference 803. AP’s history gives 1952 as the calibre’s introduction; Fratello describes its release as 1953. The available accounts differ by a year, so the date is best expressed with attribution rather than as a single uncontested year.

AP’s figure for Calibre 2003’s thickness is 1.64 mm. That thinness helped make it a long-lived part of the manufacture’s output: AP says almost 75% of its watches were equipped with the calibre in 1958 and that more than 60,000 units were produced over more than half a century. These are AP’s historical production claims, not specifications of an individual 5043BC.

Calibre 2003 and 2003SQ are not interchangeable descriptions
The standard Calibre 2003 in the 5043BC example should not be conflated with Calibre 2003SQ, AP’s openworked variation. AP says it decided to openwork the movement in 1970. The 2003SQ has its own published technical specifications and a distinctive hand-finishing history.
AP reports that it used 14-carat gold bridges and plates for the openworked mechanism, that the first 250 pieces took five years to complete, and that a skilled artisan could spend almost a week at the bench on one movement. Those details refer to the openworked variant, not routine assembly of every standard 2003 in a 5043BC.

What AP’s 1972 leaflet can—and cannot—establish
The archive record places Model 5043 in AP’s 1972 material and identifies its movement as Calibre 2003, then described as 1.64 mm thick. The illustrated yellow-gold watch was listed at CHF 2,990 in that historical leaflet. That amount is a period price, not a present-day valuation. The record is useful evidence that the ultra-thin line remained in AP’s catalog context in 1972; it does not establish a precise production end date for the 5043BC.
AP’s innovation history places the 9ML and successor Calibre 2003 in a continuous movement lineage from 1938 to the early twenty-first century. Its own archive and movement-history pages provide the strongest evidence for that chronology and the calibre’s specifications.

What to check on a vintage 5043BC
A reference description does not establish the originality or condition of a particular watch. Fratello notes possible dial staining and refinished dials among examples it encountered, and cautions against over-polished cases. Those are collector observations, not a statistical survey, so inspection should focus on the actual watch and its documentation.
- Dial: Examine printing, finish and signs of refinishing or staining; ask for clear photographs and a specialist’s opinion if originality is uncertain.
- Case: Check that case edges and surfaces retain their definition and have not been excessively polished.
- Movement and records: Confirm the movement identity, inspect service documentation and have a qualified watchmaker assess function and condition.
- Marks and serials: Review the watch’s markings and serials as part of a broader authentication assessment; no single external feature proves authenticity.
- Bracelet: If fitted with a Gay Frères bracelet, establish whether it is original to the watch and correctly fitted.
- Water exposure: Fratello describes the example as having no water resistance. Do not assume a vintage 5043BC is safe around water; a watchmaker must assess the condition of its seals and case.
Availability and value
The historical leaflet’s CHF 2,990 figure cannot be used as a current market value, and the available sources do not establish present-day prices, recent sale results or live availability. Each example’s originality, condition, service history and configuration need to be assessed individually rather than inferred from its reference alone.
