Its calibre 2885 brings those functions together in a watch whose size, sound-making mechanism and intricate movement are as much a part of the experience as its complication count.
There is no single specification sheet for every example discussed here: Hodinkee’s 2013 account covers a three-piece titanium-and-ceramic edition, its 2024 revisit concerns a 2016 watch, and AP’s US product pages identify white- and black-ceramic references. The dimensions and prices below belong to those specific reports and references; they are not a claim of personal testing.
What makes the Grande Complication special?
It brings together three functions that solve very different problems. A split-seconds chronograph can time two events that start together but finish separately. A perpetual calendar tracks calendar changes, including leap years, while a minute repeater chimes the time on demand. In the versions described by Hodinkee, all three are driven by AP calibre 2885.
The result is not simply a chronograph with extra calendar displays. The movement has to coordinate elapsed-time measurement, calendar indications and a striking mechanism within one watch. Hodinkee’s 2013 report describes the calibre as containing 648 unique parts, each hand-finished, with some parts sandblasted.

Calibre 2885: what the complications do
Split-seconds chronograph
A split-seconds, or rattrapante, chronograph has two central seconds hands. They can begin together; one can be stopped to record an intermediate time while the other continues, then catch up when released. Hodinkee’s 2013 report says the chronograph uses a column-wheel mechanism.
Perpetual calendar
A perpetual calendar is designed to account for the differing lengths of months and leap years, reducing the need for manual correction compared with a basic calendar. The 2024 Hodinkee account of a 2016 example specifically identifies a leap-year indicator and moon phase alongside the perpetual calendar. Those are descriptions of that reported example, not evidence that every dial or edition has identical displays.

Minute repeater
A minute repeater sounds the time when activated, using chimes rather than relying only on a dial. Hodinkee’s 2013 account says the watch uses two gongs on the same level. This acoustic complication adds another demanding mechanism to the chronograph and calendar functions.
Which edition or example is being discussed?
The reports concern different watches, so their case materials, thicknesses and prices should not be merged. AP’s US product pages identify two ceramic references, while Hodinkee supplies details about a 2013 limited edition and a separate 2016 example.

The complication set is the common thread in the Hodinkee descriptions; it does not make the physical specifications interchangeable. AP’s product pages establish that it lists those ceramic references, but a product page alone does not establish whether either is currently in production or orderable.
How does it wear?
The available wear account is specific to the 2016 example: the 2024 Hodinkee author calls it heavy and wrist-filling and recounts wearing it at an auction preview. The reported dimensions are 44 mm across and 15.70 mm thick. That is a substantial profile, but no wrist measurement or broader fit comparison is given, so the account cannot predict how it will sit on another person.

The 2013 report gives a different thickness—17.5 mm—for its titanium-and-ceramic edition. That figure should not be substituted for the 15.70 mm measurement of the 2016 watch. Both reports state 20 m water resistance, a specification to treat as limited splash protection rather than a reason to use this highly complicated watch for swimming.

Price evidence is dated and tied to different contexts. Hodinkee reported a launch price of $741,600 in 2013 for the three-piece titanium-and-ceramic edition. In its 2024 account, it reported that a different example sold at auction for €455,000 against an estimate of €350,000–700,000. The auction result is a single reported transaction, not a standard market value; neither figure is a current retail quote.

The captured AP US pages for the white and black ceramic references display no price. They therefore do not establish a current price, production status or availability. Anyone considering a purchase would need current confirmation from AP or an authorized seller for the exact reference and market.
What the hands-on reports say about making it
Hodinkee’s 2013 report says a watchmaker spent over 860 hours on each watch and that each was assembled, tested and disassembled three times before leaving the workshop. These are manufacturing details reported for that edition in 2013, not independently verified claims about present-day factory practice.
The same account describes the watch as openworked and identifies the combination of its titanium case with ceramic bezel, crown and pushers. That construction gives the movement a visible role in the watch’s appearance, while the three complications explain why the calibre—not just the case—is central to what makes the Offshore Grande Complication unusual.
