Its closest historical peer is Patek Philippe’s Nautilus. A meaningful comparison with other luxury sports watches has to be made reference by reference, because the Royal Oak family spans several sizes, metals and complications, and current like-for-like specifications and prices for the rival models could not be verified for this guide.
What defines the Royal Oak’s design
AP dates the Royal Oak’s debut to 1972 and credits Gérald Genta with its design. Four elements define the look, according to AP’s collection page:
- Octagonal bezel. The eight-sided outline is the shape that identifies the model.
- Eight hexagonal screws. The screws are visible on the case, so the construction is part of the design rather than hidden behind it.
- Tapisserie dial. The dial is finished with a grid-patterned texture. Current dial names such as Grande Tapisserie refer to variations of this pattern.
- Integrated bracelet. The bracelet is built into the case rather than attached as a strap. The next section looks at what AP says about it.
AP does not present any one of these features as unprecedented. The comparison therefore turns less on which features a watch has than on how well they are executed in steel.
What AP says it did, and did not, invent
AP’s heritage article “Birth of an Icon” (undated on the accessed page) describes the first Royal Oak bracelet as having 154 components and as the most complex sports bracelet made in steel at the time. The same account is explicit that the Royal Oak was not the first integrated steel bracelet. The distinction AP claims is the complexity of the execution and the high level of finishing.

Craft as the point of working in steel
According to AP’s heritage account, the aim was to make a steel sports bracelet to artistic-craftsmanship standards. AP’s material history attributes the prestige of the original steel model to its finely finished exterior and its luxury positioning. The argument is that steel can carry high-end craft, not that steel is a lesser material.
Olivier Audemars, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Audemars Piguet, puts the brand’s position this way in the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet’s “Designing time” material: “We make beautiful objects that will last many lifetimes… Everything we produce is an expression of our watchmakers’ craft.” This is the company’s own viewpoint, not an independent assessment.

How the Royal Oak lines up against its rivals

Nautilus: the closest historical peer
According to AP’s heritage account, Patek Philippe presented the Nautilus in 1976, and its launch campaign echoed arguments made for the Royal Oak 5402: finely crafted steel can support an expensive luxury watch suited to both formal and informal settings. That makes the two a natural pair for historical positioning. It does not show that one is superior, or that the two current models are interchangeable. Their present-day cases, bracelets and movements are not compared here.
How to run the comparison yourself
Because the Royal Oak family varies so much, start from a specific reference and use the maker’s current specification for it. Work through these steps for each model you are considering:

- Compatibility: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

- Pin down the exact reference. Take the reference number from the maker’s product page. “Royal Oak” on its own does not describe a particular watch.
- Compare physical size. Check case diameter and thickness, and lug-to-lug and wrist fit where the maker publishes them.
- Compare the bracelet. Look at link construction, finishing, taper, and how it sizes and adjusts. For the Royal Oak, the bracelet section above gives the historical context.
- Compare the dial. Note the pattern, the contrast of hands and markers, and how easily you can read it in the light you wear it in.
- Compare the movement and water resistance. Check the power reserve, any complications, and the stated water-resistance rating.
- Price the models in one market on one date. Retail prices change. Compare only figures in the same currency, market and day, and add availability, warranty and servicing terms.
- Judge comfort on your own wrist. Wrist size and taste determine comfort and visual presence. No independent wear testing is cited here, so try the watch on before you decide.
What the current Royal Oak range includes
AP’s 2022 design overview of the collection describes a refresh with models in 34, 37, 38 and 41 mm, slimmer bracelet links and ergonomic changes. It attributes a 60-hour power reserve to the new caliber 5900, and says 41 mm chronographs use caliber 4401. These are the details of that 2022 refresh, not a complete catalog for 2026, so check AP’s current listings before relying on them.
Example: reference 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06
AP’s US product page lists reference 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06 as a 41 mm stainless-steel selfwinding Royal Oak with a Grande Tapisserie dial in Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50. No price is quoted here, because prices and stock change. Confirm the current figure with an AP boutique or the product page for your market.
