Baselworld did not return in 2022. MCH Group announced a redesigned fair for 31 March to 4 April 2022, then cancelled it on 12 November 2021. The cancellation and the departure of major exhibitors point to a serious challenge for the event; they do not prove that nobody in the watch trade cared.
What happened to Baselworld 2022?
Baselworld was a major watch, jewellery and gems trade fair run by MCH Group. In 2021, the organizer announced a relaunch with a revised concept, including a digital business-to-business platform and a physical event planned for spring 2022. The proposed dates were 31 March to 4 April 2022, as reported by SWI swissinfo.ch.
That plan was cancelled before the fair took place. On 12 November 2021, MCH Group said it needed more time to develop the concept. The company cited renewed uncertainty around COVID-19, lessons from a Geneva Watch Days pop-up, and discussions with manufacturers and retailers. MCH Group’s announcement and contemporaneous coverage by Hodinkee reported the decision.
So “Baselworld is back” described an announced relaunch, not a completed 2022 edition. The distinction matters: there was no 2022 fair whose attendance or commercial performance can be assessed.

Why was the relaunch in doubt?
Major brands had left for Watches & Wonders
Contemporaneous reporting said that Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Chopard, Tudor, Hublot, Zenith, TAG Heuer, Grand Seiko and Oris had moved to Watches & Wonders. Their departure was a significant exhibitor problem for Baselworld, especially given the prominence of those names. It is not, by itself, a measure of how many retailers, visitors or other businesses still had an interest in Baselworld.
Watches & Wonders was therefore a visible alternative for some of the brands that had previously given Baselworld much of its draw. But the available reporting does not provide comparable attendance or sales figures for the two fairs, so it cannot establish which performed better commercially.

MCH was still working out whom the new platform would serve
MCH CEO Beat Zwahlen described the potential business-to-business concept as a platform connecting medium-sized and specialized manufacturers with independent retailers. He also said that those groups’ needs required further study, including their marketing and transaction needs and changes in distribution, internationalization and digitization.
“The conclusion is that the market exists for a B:B:C platform that brings together medium-sized and specialized manufacturers with independent retailers. But their needs must be analyzed in more detail.”

That statement, from MCH Group’s November 2021 announcement, suggests the proposed concept was aimed at a different part of the trade from a simple revival of the old flagship show. It also makes clear that the organizer was still evaluating what those potential participants needed.

The evidence supports a measured answer: Baselworld faced a serious exhibitor and concept challenge, but the available facts do not show that interest had disappeared altogether. The departing brands demonstrate that a number of high-profile exhibitors had chosen another event. MCH’s stated interest in a platform for smaller and specialist makers and independent retailers points to a possible audience the organizer believed existed, while its call for more analysis shows that the format and those groups’ requirements were not yet settled.

No suitable statistic in the reporting measures audience interest at the time of cancellation. Brand departures cannot be turned into an attendance figure, a measure of retailer demand or proof that the fair had no remaining value. And because the planned 2022 edition never happened, there are no results from that edition to use as a test of the relaunch.
What the cancellation meant
For watch fans, Baselworld 2022 was not a show to attend or a stage on which to see new releases: it was cancelled before opening. For the industry, the decision left MCH’s proposed physical-and-digital platform unrealized and the proposed audience still under study. Baselworld managing director Michel Loris-Melikoff decided to leave following the cancellation, according to Hodinkee’s report.
The available information here does not establish what became of the Baselworld name or whether a successor event followed. What it does establish is narrower and clearer: MCH planned a return, several prominent brands had moved to Watches & Wonders, and MCH cancelled the 2022 edition before it took place.
