The Bausele Terra Australis is a large, deliberately unconventional watch built around a crown at 12 o’clock, a central rotating minute display and a clawed exterior. Its appeal is its distinctive design and use of Australian materials; its 46 mm prototype case and unusual time display make it a personal, taste-dependent choice rather than an obvious everyday watch. The key qualification: the detailed 2015 hands-on review covered a pre-production prototype, while a 2018 Red Back article describes a later production-era version.
What the 2015 hands-on review actually covered
Felix Scholz’s review for Time+Tide, published 28 May 2015, examined a pre-production prototype. Scholz explicitly warned that finishing, the strap and other design details were expected to change. Its specifications and observations should therefore be read as a record of that example, not a guarantee of every production watch’s final details.
The prototype had a 46 mm case, a crown at 12 o’clock, a central rotating minute disc, a Bauselite central component and a Soprod A10 automatic movement. The review gave a retail estimate of roughly $4,400 at the time; that is a 2015 prototype-era estimate, not current pricing or a present-day valuation.
How the Terra Australis displays the time
The 2015 prototype account
In the prototype reviewed in 2015, the minute display is a central rotating disc. The minute closest to the hour hand indicates the minutes. This is less immediately familiar than reading a conventional minute hand against a fixed chapter ring, so expect a learning curve rather than assuming the layout will be intuitive at first glance.

The later Red Back description
Time+Tide’s 2018 Red Back article describes a stationary red arrow at 9 o’clock indicating the minute against the central rotating disc. That account concerns the later Red Back version; it should not be silently substituted for the 2015 prototype description.
Design, size and wrist presence
The 2015 prototype pairs its top-mounted crown and central display with a prominent, clawed exterior structure. The result is not a restrained dress-watch silhouette. Zach Weiss, quoted in the 2015 review, summed up its maximalist character: “Clearly ‘less is more’ is not their design philosophy.” Whether that is a selling point or a drawback depends on how much visual presence you want from a watch.

Scholz considered the combination of a 46 mm case, crown at 12 and five claws polarizing, while noting that the curved caseback helped comfort on the wrist. Those are one reviewer’s observations about a prototype, not a universal fit verdict. Case diameter alone cannot settle fit: wrist shape, lug and case geometry, and individual preference matter too.
Australian materials and the Red Back era
The Terra Australis’s Australian identity is more than a name. The 2018 Red Back coverage describes Kimberley red dirt set into the crown and a central Bauselite component developed for Bausele in a relationship with Flinders University’s Centre for NanoScale Science & Technology. Bausele’s own Terra Australis article also identifies Kimberley red earth in the crown.

Founder and design director Christophe Hoppe described the intention as making a watch that was both innovative and distinctly Australian: “The Terra Australis is the timepiece I always wanted to make. It would have been easier to design such a watch and have it manufactured offshore, but I wanted to create something that was both innovative and uniquely Australian.” This is the brand’s stated design ambition, not an independent assessment of where every component was made.
What the 2018 edition figures mean
The 2018 Red Back article reports four special versions, each limited to 50 pieces, and 850 possible personalized combinations. These are figures reported for that coverage and period. They do not establish present-day stock, current production, or how many examples remain available.

Movement and ownership considerations
The 2015 prototype review identifies a Soprod A10 automatic movement. Bausele’s current general manual says movement details vary by model and names Sellita as its primary current movement supplier; that broad statement does not replace the specific historical identification for the reviewed prototype. For a particular Terra Australis, confirm the movement and service options with Bausele or a qualified watchmaker familiar with that example.
Bausele’s current general watch manual states that its watches carry a two-year international warranty for manufacturing defects and mechanical faults under normal use, recommends servicing every five to seven years, and says service typically takes four to six weeks depending on the issue and parts. These are general brand policies; applicability to a Terra Australis depends on its age, edition and circumstances, so verify coverage directly before relying on them.

The same manual advises ensuring the crown is screwed down before submersion and rinsing salt or sand away with fresh water after swimming. Treat these as general care guidance, not confirmation of the water-resistance rating or swimming suitability of a specific Terra Australis.
Is the Bausele Terra Australis available now?
The historical articles establish the watch’s design and some edition details, but they do not confirm current stock, a live retailer listing or a current market value. Before treating one as purchasable, check a current seller listing and confirm the exact edition, condition, movement, included strap and service history. A search for “Bausele Terra Australis watch” may help with collector discovery, but a search result by itself is not proof of availability.
