Before Buying a Watch, Ask the Manufacturer How It Was Made

A practical checklist for asking manufacturers where a watch’s materials and components come from, how suppliers are monitored, and whether the model can be repaired over time.

Before buying, ask the manufacturer about the exact model’s materials and origins, where its components were made, how far upstream it can trace suppliers, how it manages labor and environmental risks, and what repair support it offers. A country-of-origin label or broad sustainability claim cannot answer all of those questions.

What “how it was made” means for a watch

A watch’s production chain can extend well beyond its final assembly: raw-material extraction and refining, component production, assembly, and distribution all matter. A single watch may combine steel, gold, titanium, ceramic, tungsten carbide, leather, gemstones, or coatings, with different suppliers and production locations for different parts. WWF’s 2018 report describes this complexity and notes that impacts vary by material, process, location, and management: WWF’s watch-industry report.

Use the model’s actual components as a checklist: case, movement, dial, crystal, bracelet or strap, precious metals, gemstones, and coatings. Ask which stages and suppliers the company can identify. Where the watch is assembled is useful information, but it does not by itself establish where every component or raw material came from.

Questions to ask about the exact model

Which materials does it use, and where did they come from?

Ask for the material categories and sourcing regions relevant to the model, not only a general statement about “responsible materials.” If it contains gold, for example, ask whether the manufacturer can identify the source and the evidence behind that claim. Rolex describes mapping suppliers and the origin, sites, and manufacturing context of materials, and identifies risks that include forced labor, child labor, workers’ rights, and environmental impacts in its 2023 Sustainability Report.

How far upstream can you trace each material?

Ask which supplier tiers are mapped and which are supported by traceability evidence for the physical material or batch in question. A supplier map is not necessarily proof that a specific material lot can be followed through the chain. Ask where the available information stops.

Where are the components made, and where is the watch assembled?

Ask whether production is in-house or contracted, and which countries or factories make key components. WWF notes that components are often made at factories separate from the final assembly site, sometimes in other countries. The report dates to 2018, so it is useful for understanding the shape of a supply chain, not for ranking present-day brands.

How are suppliers screened and monitored?

Ask whether the manufacturer has a supplier code, conducts audits, requires corrective action when issues are found, and provides worker grievance channels. Find out whether it reports findings or only describes policies. Timex Group’s 2024 Sustainability Report describes supplier onboarding, audit controls, and monitoring; these disclosures describe that company’s system, not an industry-wide standard.

What environmental impacts are measured or reduced?

Where relevant to the model and its production, ask about material sourcing and processing, energy, water, waste, and transport. For any reported reduction or target, request the boundary, date, and supporting evidence. Impacts differ across materials, processes, locations, and how operations are managed, as WWF’s 2018 report explains.

What repair support is available?

Ask how long the manufacturer supports service, whether parts are available, and which repair options apply to the model. Patek Philippe says it maintains and repairs timepieces produced since its founding in 1839; that is a company-specific statement, not a guarantee from other manufacturers. Its sustainability information also discusses repair and longevity.

How to compare manufacturers’ answers

Use the same questions for each watch you are considering. A clear answer names the model or product range, defines what is covered, and points to evidence. A broad label or policy can be a starting point, but it is less informative than a disclosure that explains which materials, supplier tiers, factories, and controls are included.

Compare What to look for
Model specificity Does the answer cover the exact model, or only the brand generally?
Material origin Are materials and sourcing regions identified, with evidence for the claim?
Supply-chain reach Which supplier tiers are mapped or traced, and where does information stop?
Production locations Are component factories and assembly locations distinguished?
Labor and environmental controls Are screening, audits, corrective actions, grievance channels, and environmental measures described? Are results disclosed?
Repair support Are service duration, parts availability, and model-specific options explained?

Company reports and product pages are useful evidence of what a manufacturer says it does; they are not independent verification unless the source establishes that. For example, Rolex reported that 1,296 suppliers had signed its Sustainable Development Charter and that compliance questionnaires covered 64% of turnover with suppliers presenting a risk in its 2023 report. Those figures describe the scope of the company’s disclosures, not proof that every supplier or material in a particular watch has been independently verified.

What country-of-origin labels do—and do not—tell you

A label such as “Swiss Made” is one piece of production information, not a complete map of materials and components. WWF’s 2018 report discusses how components may be made elsewhere even when a watch is assembled in a traditional Swiss workshop. Swatch Group says local value creation for its watches ranges from 60% to 100% under the applicable Swissness regulation; that is the group’s disclosure and should not be generalized to every Swiss-made watch. Other company disclosures illustrate why scope matters. Chopard says that gold used in its workshops has been ethically produced since July 2018 and describes Lucent Steel as using industrial scraps and high-grade steel from other industries: Chopard’s responsible-sourcing information. Breitling says its Origins label provides documented, verified supply-chain information for certain watches and materials; that program applies to covered products, not all watches: Breitling’s sustainability information. Treat each statement as the company’s own disclosure and check whether it covers the model you are considering.

Useful follow-up when a reply is vague

  • If the answer says “responsibly sourced,” ask which material, supplier tiers, and sourcing regions that phrase covers.
  • If it gives an assembly country, ask where the movement and other components were made.
  • If it cites audits, ask what proportion or tier they cover, whether corrective actions are tracked, and whether results are shared.
  • If it makes an environmental claim, ask what boundary and date the figure uses and whether it concerns the specific model, a facility, or the company as a whole.
  • If it promises long-term service, ask whether the policy applies to this model and how to check parts and repair availability.

Timex Group reported that 77% of its watches were assembled in-house at facilities in Cebu, Baddi, and Lugano in 2024, and that it conducted 60 Tier 1 supplier audits that year. These are company-reported figures in its 2024 report, published in 2026; they describe Timex Group’s reported operations and audit activity, not the sourcing history of every individual watch.
