Bell & Ross introduced the BR-01 in 2005, turning the look of an aircraft cockpit instrument into a wristwatch. A decade later, the brand marked the anniversary with a 500-piece edition in black ceramic. The BR-01’s “circle in a square” design helped make it a defining Bell & Ross shape; calling it an icon is a judgment about its place in the brand’s history, not a sales or market statistic.
What is the Bell & Ross BR-01?
Bell & Ross traces its founding to 1994, crediting Carlos-A. Rosillo and Bruno Belamich as its founders. The brand dates the BR-01 to 2005 and says the watch was directly inspired by aeronautical instruments. Its oversized, legible instrument-style display brought that visual language to the wrist. Bell & Ross’s official history identifies the BR-01 as the origin of the brand’s “circle in a square” signature, later carried into collections including the BR-03 and BR-05.
Why is the BR-01 square?
The design translates the form of a cockpit instrument into a watch: a round dial sits inside a square case. The contrast between the circular display and angular outline is the “circle in a square” motif. It is more than a case shape; according to the brand’s account, it became a recurring visual thread across later Bell & Ross lines.
What was special about the BR 01 10th Anniversary?
Presented at Baselworld in 2015, the BR 01 10th Anniversary revisited the model’s established design in a limited edition. Time and Watches reported that 500 pieces were made, engraved and individually numbered.

The anniversary model’s significance is in how directly it carried forward the original design: a black, instrument-like dial framed by the BR-01’s square outline. The ceramic case and limited production distinguished this edition without changing the basic visual formula.
How to distinguish the ceramic edition from another 10th Anniversary listing
“10th Anniversary” appears in the name of a separate BR01-92 reference, so the shared wording does not mean the watches are the same. Tourneau identifies its BR01-92 10th Anniversary, reference BR0192-10TH-CE, as a 42 mm steel automatic watch with 100 m water resistance. Those details differ from the 46 mm ceramic BR 01 10th Anniversary reported in 2015. A captured Tourneau listing marked the steel reference out of stock; that status can change and should not be taken as current availability.

For a collector comparing listings, start with the reference number rather than the anniversary label. Then check case size and material, movement, complications, condition, provenance, and whether box and papers are included. The available reports establish two distinct specifications, not that the watches are interchangeable.

The BR-01 gave Bell & Ross a recognizable design signature: the pairing of a circular dial and square case. The brand’s own history says that motif continued into later lines, making the model an important part of how the company presents its identity. “Icon” is best understood here as a description of that lasting brand recognition—not as a claim about sales figures, market share, or resale performance, for which no figures are established in the cited accounts.
