Best Android smartwatch: top picks from Google, Garmin and Samsung

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updated August 10, 2026. The best Android smartwatch for most people is the Google Pixel Watch 4. Choose the Samsung Galaxy Watch9 if you own a Samsung Galaxy phone, the Garmin Venu 4 for battery life and general fitness, and the Garmin Forerunner 570 or Forerunner 970 for serious running and triathlon training.

Important before you buy: A Galaxy Watch paired with a Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, or other non-Samsung Android phone can perform many ordinary smartwatch and fitness functions, but Samsung Health Monitor features such as ECG and sleep-apnea monitoring require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. If those features matter, the phone ecosystem matters as much as the watch.

Best for Our pick Why choose it Main compromise
Most Android users Google Pixel Watch 4 Best balance of Wear OS apps, Google services, safety features, health tracking, and design Shorter battery life and optional Google Health Premium costs
Samsung Galaxy phones Samsung Galaxy Watch9 Strongest Samsung Health and Galaxy ecosystem integration Some major health features do not work on non-Samsung phones
Battery and general fitness Garmin Venu 4 Up to 10 or 12 days of battery life, multi-band GPS, and deeper training metrics Fewer apps and less capable smart features than Wear OS
Serious runners and triathletes Garmin Forerunner 570 Advanced training tools at the lower price of Garmin’s newest running range More fitness watch than everyday smartwatch
Running with maps and premium materials Garmin Forerunner 970 Built-in maps, advanced running metrics, flashlight, and premium construction $749.99 starting price
Rugged outdoor use Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Large, bright, durable, LTE-capable smartwatch with route and diving features 47mm case, high price, and Samsung-phone restrictions
Lower-cost option Samsung Galaxy Watch7 Worth considering when heavily discounted because it retains Wear OS and a broad feature set One-day battery and an older-generation platform

The quick buying decision

There is no single best Android watch because Google, Samsung, and Garmin optimize for different things. Answer these five questions before comparing specifications:

  1. Which phone do you use? Pixel Watch 4 requires Android 11 or newer and does not work with iPhone. Garmin is the most flexible because it supports Android and iPhone. Galaxy Watch9 is designed for Android, but its most important health features are reserved for compatible Samsung Galaxy phones.
  2. Do you want a smartwatch or a fitness watch? Pixel Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch9 are smartwatch-first products. They are better for apps, messaging, navigation, payments, and voice interaction. Garmin Venu 4 and the Forerunner watches are fitness-first products that put battery life, GPS, structured workouts, and recovery data ahead of app variety.
  3. How often are you willing to charge? Expect frequent charging from standard Wear OS watches. Garmin is the better choice if overnight sleep tracking, travel, camping, or several GPS workouts between charges are important.
  4. Do you need LTE? Buy it if you want to leave your phone behind for calls, messages, streaming music, or supported safety features. Skip it if you usually carry your phone and do not want another monthly cellular charge.
  5. Which specialist features matter most? Pick Pixel Watch 4 for Google services and safety, Galaxy Watch9 for Samsung Health on a Galaxy phone, Venu 4 for battery and general fitness, Forerunner 570 or 970 for training, and Ultra2 for rugged Samsung smartwatch capability.

Compatibility comes before features

Google Pixel Watch 4

The Pixel Watch 4 requires a phone running Android 11 or newer, the Pixel Watch app, and a Google Account. Android Go devices are not supported, and there is no iPhone compatibility. Google’s compatibility and region guide also lists carrier and regional requirements for LTE versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The LTE model can make the watch more independent from the phone once it is activated with a supported carrier. Full talk, text, and data functionality generally works best when the watch and phone use the same carrier network. In the United States, Pixel Watch 4 LTE units purchased from the Google Store or Best Buy are eligible for two years of data and texting at no charge under Google’s terms, but that offer is subject to carrier limitations and is not a promise of unlimited cellular service.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel Watch 4 (45mm) - Smartwatch - Moonstone Active Band - Wi-Fi
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

Samsung Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2

Samsung’s current mainstream model is the Galaxy Watch9, which became generally available in the United States on August 7, 2026. It starts at $379.99 for Bluetooth and $429.99 for LTE. The official Watch9 and Ultra2 announcement should be checked for the exact minimum Android version, supported phone models, and current feature availability before buying for an older Android handset.

Many ordinary functions work when a Galaxy Watch is paired with a non-Samsung Android phone: notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, GPS, Wear OS apps, and some payment and messaging features. However, Samsung Health Monitor is the crucial exception. A compatible Samsung Galaxy phone is required for Samsung’s ECG, sleep-apnea monitoring, and related Health Monitor features. Some phone-dependent features may also vary by region and software version.

Galaxy Watch warning: Do not buy a Galaxy Watch for ECG or sleep-apnea monitoring until you have confirmed that your exact Samsung phone model, country, software version, and carrier support the feature. Pairing it with Android is not the same as receiving feature parity with a Galaxy phone.

Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 do not support iPhone. LTE versions also require carrier activation and generally an additional cellular plan.

Garmin Venu 4 and Forerunner watches

Garmin Connect requires Android 9 or newer and a phone that natively supports Google Play. Android Go devices are not supported. Garmin watches generally also work with iPhone, making them the safest choice if you might change platforms later. Notifications and reply options are more capable on Android than on iPhone, and Garmin documents Garmin Connect compatibility requirements separately.

Garmin’s flexibility does not mean it is a second Wear OS watch. Venu 4 has notifications, music storage, Garmin Pay, calls through a paired phone, and voice features, but its third-party app selection and Android-service integration are much narrower than Pixel Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch9.

Best overall: Google Pixel Watch 4

Choose the Google Pixel Watch 4 if you want the most complete conventional Android smartwatch experience and do not mind charging at least every day or two.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting at $349.99 in the United States, the Pixel Watch 4 comes in 41mm and 45mm sizes. It is the clearest choice for people who use Google Maps, Google Wallet, Google Calendar, Google Health, and Google’s voice and safety services. The watch runs Wear OS 6 and supports a broad Wear OS app ecosystem, on-watch notifications, messaging, calls, music, navigation, and voice interaction including Google’s newer Gemini integration.

Google also gives the Pixel Watch 4 a strong sensor and safety package. The hardware includes a multi-path optical heart-rate sensor, dual-frequency GPS, ECG-compatible electrical sensors, SpO2 sensors where available, a skin-temperature sensor, and a cEDA body-response sensor. It tracks sleep, stress, heart rate, exercise, and activity. Loss of Pulse Detection is available on Pixel Watch 3 and 4 in supported regions, while Satellite SOS is limited to Pixel Watch 4 LTE and depends on Wear OS version, region, carrier, and conditions. These are safety and wellness functions, not substitutes for emergency planning or medical care.

Pixel Watch 4 battery and sizes

Version Google rating Fit guidance
41mm Up to 30 hours with always-on display Approximately 130–210mm wrist circumference
45mm Up to 40 hours with always-on display; up to 72 hours in Battery Saver Approximately 150–215mm wrist circumference

Google’s official figures are the comparable baseline. In independent testing, Tom’s Guide reported more than 60 hours from the 45mm Pixel Watch 4, but that result is a test outcome rather than a universal expectation. Always-on display, LTE, GPS, weak cellular signal, music playback, frequent calls, continuous sensors, animated watch faces, heat, and battery age can all reduce endurance.

The 45mm model is the better choice for battery life and readability, while the 41mm model is more practical for smaller wrists. The rounded display is attractive but exposes more of the screen to accidental knocks than a rugged outdoor watch. Also check the charger before upgrading: the Pixel Watch 4 charger is not necessarily compatible with older Pixel Watch chargers.

Google Health and the subscription question

Google says the Fitbit app is transitioning to the Google Health app beginning May 19, 2026. Each Pixel Watch purchase includes a six-month Google Health Premium trial. Deeper insights, workouts, mindfulness content, and coaching can require the paid service after the trial. The trial must be activated within 60 days and requires valid payment details, so cancel it if you do not want a recurring charge. See Google’s Pixel Watch Health Premium terms before activating it.

Google Pixel Watch 4 (41mm) - Smartwatch- Porcelain Active Band - Wi-Fi
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]

  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

Why it is not perfect: Pixel Watch 4 still cannot match Garmin’s battery life, and the best LTE and Health features can raise the ownership cost. It is also the wrong choice for an iPhone owner or an athlete who wants detailed training-load and recovery tools above all else.

Best for Samsung Galaxy phones: Samsung Galaxy Watch9

Choose Galaxy Watch9 when your phone is a Samsung Galaxy and you want Samsung’s most integrated mainstream smartwatch.

The Watch9 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes. The US starting prices are $379.99 for Bluetooth and $429.99 for LTE. It is the natural companion for Samsung Health, Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem, and Samsung’s watch-specific wellness features. It offers Wear OS apps, Google services, notifications, calls, messaging, payments where supported, GPS, sleep tracking, Energy Score, Vitals, and current Samsung software features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung’s BioActive sensor and Health platform can provide sleep tracking, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, ECG, sleep-apnea monitoring, and blood-pressure functions where the relevant regulatory and regional conditions are met. The restrictions matter more than the feature list: ECG and sleep-apnea monitoring require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. Samsung says its blood-pressure feature requires calibration with an upper-arm cuff every 28 days, and its support documentation states that blood-pressure monitoring is not available in the United States. Health scores and alerts should be treated as wellness information, not a diagnosis.

Battery life is the Watch9’s main ordinary-model weakness. Samsung’s launch specifications rate the 40mm model at up to 30 hours with the always-on display. In practical terms, most users should plan on roughly daily charging, especially with LTE, GPS, calls, or continuous sensors active. The larger model may last differently, so compare the exact size rather than assuming the quoted figure applies to every version.

A Pixel owner can still use many Galaxy Watch9 functions, but the decision is less clear. Choose Pixel Watch 4 for deeper Google integration and Pixel safety features; choose Watch9 only if Samsung’s design, Health platform, or Galaxy-specific functions outweigh that limitation.

Best battery and fitness balance: Garmin Venu 4

Choose the Garmin Venu 4 if you want a polished everyday watch that you can wear for days while getting substantially deeper fitness data than a typical Wear OS watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Venu 4 starts at $549.99 in the United States and comes in 41mm and 45mm cases. Garmin rates the 41mm version for up to 10 days and the 45mm version for up to 12 days in smartwatch mode. Those figures are not directly comparable to Pixel or Samsung ratings because brands use different test profiles, but the practical advantage is clear: Venu 4 is a much better candidate for continuous sleep tracking, travel, and multiple GPS workouts between charges.

Its fitness platform includes multi-band GPS, HRV Status, Body Battery, Training Readiness, recovery time, workout benefit, stress and sleep tracking, training status, race predictions, music storage, Garmin Pay, and structured workout support. Garmin ECG is available on Venu 4 in supported regions when the watch meets the required software version, including minimum version 14.07 where applicable. See Garmin’s ECG compatibility guidance for current regional details.

Venu 4 has a speaker and microphone. Calls and many voice commands depend on a paired compatible phone rather than an independent cellular connection. It has no LTE model. Garmin Pay depends on country, payment network, and issuing bank, while music services such as Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music may require their own paid subscriptions.

Why it is not the best smartwatch: Garmin’s app ecosystem is limited compared with Wear OS. You will not get the same breadth of Google Maps, Google Wallet, third-party watch apps, or on-watch Android interactions. Garmin’s advantage is not that it replicates a smaller phone; it is that it is a better long-term fitness instrument for people who value battery life and training context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Garmin also states that its health and fitness features are not medical devices. A larger number of training metrics does not automatically prove greater medical accuracy. Fit, activity, firmware, sensor contact, and the type of measurement all affect results.

Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

Best for runners and triathletes: Garmin Forerunner 570 or 970

The Forerunner 570 is the better value of Garmin’s newest running watches. The Forerunner 970 is the premium choice for athletes who need built-in maps, a flashlight, and Garmin’s most advanced running and outdoor feature set. Both are newer recommendations than the older Forerunner 265.

Feature Forerunner 570 Forerunner 970
Starting US MSRP $549.99 $749.99
Sizes 42mm and 47mm 47mm
Smartwatch battery rating Up to 11 days Up to 15 days
Built-in maps No Yes
Speaker and microphone Yes Yes
Training metrics Advanced running and triathlon tools More advanced running and outdoor tools
LED flashlight No Yes
ECG No Available in supported regions
Best for Serious runners and triathletes who want value Athletes who need maps and premium features

The Garmin launch announcement lists training status, wrist-based running power, running dynamics, acute load, VO2 max, Training Readiness, PacePro, SatIQ, multi-band GPS, Body Battery, sleep, stress, HRV, Garmin Pay, music, and Android notifications for the Forerunner 570. The 970 adds built-in maps, turn-by-turn course navigation, titanium and sapphire construction, running tolerance, running economy, step-speed loss, an LED flashlight, and ECG where supported.

The 570 does not have the 970’s onboard maps, but it still provides strong running GPS and course functions. Both watches use physical buttons as well as a display, which is useful in rain, cold weather, or sweaty workouts. Their compromise is lifestyle convenience: they look and behave more like training computers than miniature Android phones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The older Forerunner 265 remains worth considering if its sale price is substantially lower. Garmin rates the 46mm model for up to 13 days, so it may offer better value than the 570 for a runner who does not need the newer platform. It should not, however, be presented as Garmin’s newest running watch.

Best rugged Android smartwatch: Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2

Choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 if you want a rugged Samsung smartwatch rather than a pure sports watch.

The Ultra2 starts at $699.99 in the United States. It has a 47mm titanium case, an 800mAh battery, a display rated at up to 5,000 nits, and Samsung’s stated ruggedness ratings: IP69K, 10 ATM, and MIL-STD-810H. It also carries EN13319 diving certification. Samsung says it supports water activities down to 40 meters, while additional advanced diving features depend on a separate app and current availability. Follow Samsung’s water-use guidance; no water-resistance rating makes a watch universally waterproof or eliminates the need for safe diving practices.

Samsung rates the Ultra2 for up to 60 hours with the always-on display, which is a major improvement over the standard Galaxy Watch9. It supports trail running, GPX route loading, course guidance, bright outdoor viewing, LTE, and Samsung’s broader Wear OS experience. The large screen and 5,000-nit claim are especially useful outdoors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-offs are substantial. The 47mm case can be uncomfortable on a small wrist, under a shirt cuff, or during sleep. The watch is heavier and more expensive than the standard model, and its ECG, sleep-apnea, and other Samsung Health Monitor functions still depend on a compatible Galaxy phone. If your priority is multiday outdoor training rather than Samsung apps and calls, compare the Ultra2 with Garmin’s Fenix 8, Enduro 3, Forerunner 970, or Venu X1 before buying.

Best lower-cost option: Samsung Galaxy Watch7

Buy the Galaxy Watch7 only when it is heavily discounted below the newer generation. It remains a capable Wear OS watch with GPS, sleep and wellness tracking, notifications, Google services, and access to the broad Android watch-app ecosystem. Current software can also provide newer assistant features such as Gemini support.

The reasons to discount it are its one-day battery life, older-generation status, and the same Samsung-phone restrictions affecting Samsung Health Monitor features. A good sale can make it an excellent first smartwatch, particularly for a Samsung phone owner. At a small discount, the newer Watch9 is the more sensible purchase. Check the live US sale price on the day you buy rather than relying on an old MSRP.

Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch, or Garmin? The feature trade-off

Third-party apps Broad Wear OS selection Broad Wear OS selection More limited
Advanced running metrics Good general exercise tracking Good general exercise tracking Much stronger training and recovery platform

Battery life: ratings are not standardized

Use manufacturer figures to understand the direction of the comparison, not as a promise of identical real-world use. Always-on display, LTE, weak signal, continuous GPS, multi-band GPS, Bluetooth music, calls, frequent notifications, SpO2, skin temperature, cEDA, animated watch faces, temperature, and battery age can all change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Model Official or manufacturer rating What it means in practice
Pixel Watch 4 41mm Up to 30 hours with always-on display Frequent charging; overnight use requires planning
Pixel Watch 4 45mm Up to 40 hours with always-on display; up to 72 hours in Battery Saver Best Pixel Watch battery so far, but not Garmin-class
Galaxy Watch9 40mm Up to 30 hours with always-on display Plan on daily charging for normal use
Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Up to 60 hours with always-on display Much better than standard Galaxy models, but below long-battery Garmin watches
Garmin Venu 4 41mm Up to 10 days Good for sleep tracking and travel
Garmin Venu 4 45mm Up to 12 days Clear endurance advantage over Wear OS
Forerunner 265 46mm Up to 13 days Still a strong value option if discounted
Forerunner 570 Up to 11 days Newer training platform with a lower rating than the 265
Forerunner 970 Up to 15 days Longest-lasting option in Garmin’s newest running pair

Google’s official Pixel Watch 4 specifications, Garmin’s Venu 4 manual, and Garmin’s Forerunner announcement provide the manufacturer ratings above. For independent context, Tom’s Guide reported approximately 30 hours for the standard Galaxy Watch8, approximately 40 hours for the Watch8 Classic, and more than 60 hours for the 45mm Pixel Watch 4 in its testing. Those Galaxy results are for Watch8, not Watch9, so they should not be treated as a Watch9 test result.

Fitness, health, GPS, and navigation

Pixel Watch 4: best Google safety and general-health package

Pixel Watch 4 combines dual-frequency GPS with heart-rate, ECG-compatible, SpO2, skin-temperature, and cEDA sensors. It is a strong fit for general running, walking, cycling, sleep, stress, and safety use. Its GPS hardware should help in challenging environments, but GPS performance still depends on mode, buildings, trees, weather, satellite conditions, and fit.

Galaxy Watch9: strongest Samsung Health experience

Watch9 offers Samsung’s sleep, Energy Score, Vitals, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, ECG, and sleep-apnea features where supported. The phone and regional restrictions are decisive. Samsung’s blood-pressure estimates require recurring cuff calibration and are not available in the United States. None of these features should be used to diagnose, rule out, or treat a medical condition.

Garmin: strongest training context

Garmin’s HRV Status, Body Battery, Training Readiness, recovery time, training status, race predictions, running dynamics, load, and structured workouts are more useful to someone making training decisions than a simple daily activity score. That does not make Garmin readings automatically more medically accurate. Garmin also identifies its watches as non-medical devices.

GPS and maps are different features

  • Pixel Watch 4: dual-frequency GPS is well suited to everyday running, walking, and hiking.
  • Galaxy Watch9: suitable for ordinary exercise and navigation, with the exact route, map, and downloaded-content behavior dependent on the app and software.
  • Galaxy Watch Ultra2: adds GPX route loading, trail-running tools, course guidance, and a brighter outdoor display.
  • Garmin Venu 4: has multi-band GPS but is not equivalent to the Forerunner 970’s full onboard mapping experience.
  • Forerunner 570: provides strong running GPS and course and training functions without the 970’s built-in maps.
  • Forerunner 970: adds onboard maps and turn-by-turn course navigation.

Do not interpret the phrase accurate GPS as a universal ranking. A proper comparison must identify GPS-only versus all-systems or multi-band mode, route environment, weather, watch position, and the reference device.

Apps, notifications, calls, assistants, and payments

Wear OS wins for smartwatch behavior. Pixel Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch9 are the better choices if you want to install apps, use Google Maps on the wrist, interact with Google Wallet, answer messages, make calls, stream or control music, and use a voice assistant. Notifications are generally richer, and LTE versions can perform more tasks away from the phone.

Garmin wins for fitness behavior. Venu 4 and Forerunner watches provide detailed workouts, training plans, music storage, Garmin Pay, Android notifications, and in some cases calls and voice features through a paired phone. Garmin notification replies are Android-specific and vary by model. Voice commands generally use the phone’s assistant or Garmin’s limited on-watch commands. Garmin does not offer the same breadth of third-party apps as Wear OS.

Payment support is regional. Google Wallet, Samsung payment services, and Garmin Pay all depend on country, bank, network, software, and device configuration. Confirm your bank before treating payments as a deciding feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LTE: who actually needs cellular service?

LTE is useful when the watch must remain connected without the phone nearby. Buy an LTE model if you regularly run without your phone, need calls or messages independently, want to stream music, or want supported cellular safety functions. Expect a separate carrier plan for normal ongoing service.

Skip LTE if you usually carry your phone, primarily want GPS and notifications, or want to avoid monthly fees. A watch can still track workouts and use GPS without LTE; Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE, emergency calling, and satellite SOS are different forms of connectivity.

Pixel Watch 4 LTE safety functions can require an active LTE connection, a supported country and carrier, and adequate signal. Satellite SOS is limited to the LTE Pixel Watch 4 in supported regions and is not universal satellite coverage. Galaxy safety functions likewise depend on model, region, carrier, and connectivity. Do not buy an LTE watch assuming it guarantees emergency communication everywhere.

Fit and comfort are functional decisions

Case size affects battery, screen readability, weight, sleep comfort, and whether the watch catches on cuffs or equipment. Available sizes are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pixel Watch 4: 41mm and 45mm.
  • Galaxy Watch9: 40mm and 44mm.
  • Galaxy Watch Ultra2: 47mm only.
  • Garmin Venu 4: 41mm and 45mm.
  • Forerunner 570: 42mm and 47mm.
  • Forerunner 970: 47mm.

Measure your wrist circumference and check case diameter and thickness, not just the band length. A larger watch usually delivers a larger display and battery, but it may be uncomfortable overnight or under clothing. Sensor-bump shape, band material, weight, and button placement also matter. Physical buttons on Garmin Forerunners are particularly useful during rain, cold-weather workouts, or sweaty intervals; Wear OS watches depend more heavily on touch.

Google lists approximate Pixel Watch 4 fit ranges of 130–210mm for 41mm and 150–215mm for 45mm. Garmin’s Venu 4 uses 18mm bands on the 41mm model and 22mm bands on the 45mm model. Verify accessories before reusing old ones: Pixel Watch 4 chargers may not work with older Pixel Watch models, and Samsung’s newer strap system may not accept every older Galaxy Watch band. Garmin Venu 4 uses standard quick-release bands, though Garmin chargers remain proprietary across many product families.

Subscriptions and total ownership cost

The sticker price is only part of the decision:

  • Pixel Watch 4: includes a six-month Google Health Premium trial. Some deeper features require payment afterward, and the trial requires activation and payment details.
  • Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2: LTE adds a carrier plan. Promotional offers such as Strava or iFIT trials are temporary, not permanent included subscriptions.
  • Garmin: ordinary Garmin Connect data and training features are not presented as requiring a monthly subscription. Music services may require their own premium accounts, and Garmin Pay depends on bank support.
  • All models: budget for an LTE plan if needed, replacement chargers, proprietary accessories, and additional or replacement bands.

For a fair comparison, separate US MSRP from live sale prices. A discounted older watch can be excellent value, but a temporary trial or sale should not be mistaken for a permanent ownership benefit.

Health-feature limitations you should understand

Consumer watches estimate many health measurements. Optical heart-rate readings can be affected by loose fit, motion, sweat, tattoos, skin contact, and workout type. SpO2 is region-dependent and is not a diagnosis. ECG apps detect limited rhythm patterns and do not detect every heart condition. Sleep stages, calories, stress, readiness, and recovery scores are estimates.

Samsung’s blood-pressure feature requires cuff calibration and is unavailable in the United States according to Samsung’s support documentation. ECG and sleep-apnea functions require a compatible Galaxy phone. Pixel’s Loss of Pulse Detection and Satellite SOS have regional and connectivity restrictions. Garmin’s ECG is available only in supported regions and on compatible software. Read the manufacturer’s medical disclaimers, and discuss concerning readings or alerts with a qualified clinician rather than changing treatment based on a watch.

Which watch should you buy?

  • Buy Pixel Watch 4 if you use a Pixel or another Android phone and want Google services, apps, Wallet, Maps, safety tools, and a polished smartwatch interface.
  • Buy Galaxy Watch9 if you own a Samsung Galaxy phone and want the deepest Samsung Health and Galaxy integration.
  • Buy Garmin Venu 4 if battery life, sleep tracking, GPS workouts, and general fitness metrics matter more than app variety.
  • Buy Forerunner 570 if you train seriously for running or triathlon and want Garmin’s current training platform without paying for built-in maps.
  • Buy Forerunner 970 if you need onboard maps, premium materials, a flashlight, and Garmin’s most advanced running features.
  • Buy Galaxy Watch Ultra2 if you want Samsung apps and LTE in a large, rugged outdoor watch and accept its price and size.
  • Buy Galaxy Watch7 only when its discounted price is meaningfully below Watch9 and you accept daily charging and older hardware.

How to evaluate these watches fairly

This ranking separates official specifications from independent testing. Manufacturer battery ratings are useful for comparing product intent, but they are not standardized between brands. For independent context, Tom’s Guide describes testing heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, GPS, workouts, notifications, and battery life. Android Authority’s Venu 4 review provides additional independent GPS, heart-rate, and battery context.

If you are conducting your own comparison, use the same Android phone and a defined profile: begin at 100 percent, record always-on display settings, enable sleep tracking and notifications, run 30–60 minutes of GPS exercise, and keep LTE off unless LTE is the subject of the test. Run the same outdoor route, compare heart rate with a chest strap when possible, test sleep comfort over multiple nights, and check calls, voice commands, payments, music, app installation, and notifications. Test a Galaxy Watch on a non-Samsung Android phone if that is how you intend to use it. Report official claims and observed results separately.

Fixing common Android-watch problems

Galaxy health features are missing

First check the phone. If the watch is paired to a Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, or another non-Samsung Android phone, Samsung Health Monitor restrictions may be the explanation rather than a pairing fault. Confirm your country, phone model, watch model, app version, and software support in Samsung Health Monitor’s support documentation.

Garmin notifications stop arriving

Android battery optimization can put Garmin Connect to sleep. Garmin recommends the following troubleshooting sequence:

  1. Update Garmin Connect.
  2. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
  3. Remove and re-add the watch in Garmin Connect and in Android Bluetooth settings.
  4. Disable battery optimization for Garmin Connect or allow its background activity.
  5. Reboot both the phone and watch.
  6. Pair again from Garmin Connect, not only from the Android Bluetooth menu.

See Garmin’s Android battery-optimization troubleshooting for manufacturer-specific instructions.

You changed phones and your Pixel Watch will not transfer

Use Google’s supported transfer flow before factory-resetting:

  1. On the watch, open Settings → System → Transfer watch.
  2. On the old phone, open the Pixel Watch app.
  3. Select System → Transfer watch → Start Transfer.
  4. Pair the watch with the new phone.
  5. Restore the backup if prompted.

If transfer fails, Google recommends backing up, factory-resetting, and pairing again. The complete process is documented in Google’s Pixel Watch transfer instructions.

Other Garmin alternatives

The Venu 4 is the best Garmin comparison for a Pixel Watch or Galaxy Watch, but it is not Garmin’s most outdoors-focused model. The Venu X1 is worth considering if you want a very large display, built-in mapping, sapphire glass, a flashlight, speaker and microphone, and up to eight days of battery life. It costs more than Venu 4 and remains less app-rich than Wear OS. Garmin’s product comparison provides the current feature context. For extended outdoor use, also compare Garmin’s Fenix and Enduro families with the Ultra2 and Forerunner 970 rather than assuming every rugged watch serves the same athlete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Samsung Galaxy Watch9 with a Google Pixel phone?

Yes, many normal functions such as notifications, workouts, GPS, sleep tracking, and Wear OS apps can work on a non-Samsung Android phone. However, Samsung Health Monitor features including ECG and sleep-apnea monitoring require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, so it is not feature-equivalent to pairing the watch with a Galaxy.

Is Garmin better than Pixel Watch or Galaxy Watch?

Garmin is better for battery life, structured training, running metrics, recovery data, and cross-platform flexibility. Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch are better for third-party apps, Google or Samsung services, calls, messaging, payments, navigation, and voice interaction. The right choice depends on whether the watch is primarily a fitness computer or a small Android device.

Do I need LTE on an Android smartwatch?

No. LTE is worthwhile if you want to run, call, message, stream music, or use supported safety features without your phone nearby. If you normally carry your phone, Bluetooth GPS, health tracking, notifications, and most watch functions work without LTE and you avoid the additional carrier charge.

Can a smartwatch diagnose a heart or sleep condition?

No. ECG, sleep-apnea, blood-pressure, SpO2, sleep, stress, calorie, and recovery features have specific regulatory, regional, phone, and software limits. They are wellness or screening tools, not a substitute for clinical diagnosis. Discuss concerning readings or alerts with a qualified medical professional.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Google Pixel Watch 4 for the best all-around Android smartwatch and Google experience. Buy the Galaxy Watch9 for a Samsung Galaxy phone, but confirm Samsung Health Monitor compatibility first. Choose the Garmin Venu 4 when battery life and general fitness matter most, or move to the Forerunner 570 or 970 for serious running and triathlon training. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the rugged Wear OS choice, while the Galaxy Watch7 is worthwhile only at a substantial discount.
