How Apple Watch For Your Kids works
Apple Watch For Your Kids is the current name for Apple’s family-managed watch setup, formerly called Family Setup. A child does not need their own iPhone: a parent sets up and manages the watch from a compatible iPhone, and the child uses a separate Apple Account and phone number. The parent can approve contacts, manage apps and restrictions, set Schooltime, and use location sharing. The watch must be a supported GPS + Cellular model, and the carrier and plan must support the feature.
When a child has a compatible iPhone and usually carries it, pair the watch normally to that phone instead. That setup provides a fuller Apple Watch experience and allows a GPS model to rely on the nearby iPhone or Wi-Fi for many connected functions. Apple’s current setup and feature requirements are detailed in its Apple Watch For Your Kids support guide.

Best Apple Watch picks for girls
Apple Watch SE 3 GPS + Cellular: best for most children
The SE 3 is the practical first choice when the goal is a way to call family, share location, and use school restrictions without giving a child a smartphone. It is Apple’s lowest-priced current cellular-capable family-management choice in the listed U.S. configurations, and Apple specifically recommends the SE 3 GPS + Cellular for Apple Watch For Your Kids. The 40mm case is the sensible starting point for a younger child or smaller wrist; choose 44mm if the child is older, has a larger wrist, or finds small text difficult to read.
Apple’s U.S. store listed the 40mm GPS + Cellular version at $299 and the 44mm version at $329 on August 16, 2026. These are watch purchase prices, not a promise of included cellular service. See Apple’s SE buying page for the current configurations.
Apple Watch Series 11 GPS + Cellular: best for an older tween or teen
Series 11 is a reasonable upgrade for an older child who values a more premium display and design or may later use the watch paired to her own iPhone. Apple’s current lineup supports 5G capability on Series 11. In a managed child setup, however, several advanced health and other features are unavailable, so it is not automatically a better choice for calling, location, or Schooltime. Check the current Apple Watch buying page for configurations and pricing.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: only for a specific outdoor need
Ultra 3 is aimed at families who genuinely want a large, rugged, outdoor-oriented watch for an older, highly active wearer. Apple identifies it among the models that can support Apple Watch For Your Kids when configured with cellular. Its size, conspicuous appearance, and higher replacement cost make it a poor default for most children; the Ultra name itself does not provide the family controls.
GPS-only or an older cellular watch
A GPS-only watch makes sense when the child already has an iPhone and generally keeps it nearby. It is not a useful phone substitute for a child without an iPhone. Apple’s support documentation says Series 4 or later cellular models and cellular SE models can support Apple Watch For Your Kids, subject to software, regional, and carrier requirements. For a used watch, confirm cellular capability, Activation Lock removal, battery condition, physical condition, software compatibility, and carrier support before buying.

What safety features and parental controls actually do
Location sharing
Parents can share location and receive alerts about a child’s whereabouts or departure from a location such as school. It depends on account configuration, location permissions, power, and an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection; it is not guaranteed real-time tracking in every circumstance. Agree with the child who can see location, when it is used, and what to do if the watch is off or out of coverage. Apple describes the feature on its Apple Watch For Your Kids overview.
Approved contacts, app controls, and Screen Time
The managing parent can control approved contacts, app downloads and purchases, Screen Time restrictions, explicit-content and location-information restrictions, and certain watch settings. Ask to Buy can be enabled during setup. These are useful boundaries, but they are not equivalent to full parental control over a smartphone. Tell the child who may contact her and what the parent can monitor.
Schooltime
Schooltime restricts apps and notifications during scheduled hours, with a yellow indicator on the watch face. Emergency calls and designated emergency contacts remain available. It is a technical setting, not permission to wear a watch at school: policies may prohibit watches, require them to stay in a bag, or restrict cellular communication during tests.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Emergency SOS, Emergency Contacts, and Medical ID
Emergency SOS can contact emergency services, subject to cellular service or Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection from the watch or a nearby iPhone. It cannot guarantee a connection, and the child needs to know how and when to use it. Configure Emergency Contacts and Medical ID during setup, then review them as addresses, allergies, medications, and contacts change. Apple explains the connection requirement in its SE 3 announcement.
Activity and daylight
Family-managed watches support child-oriented Activity features, and Health Sharing can let parents view time spent in daylight. Treat these as activity and information tools, not medical monitoring or a complete fitness assessment.

Features children lose in managed setup
Apple Watch For Your Kids does not provide every feature available on a watch paired to an adult’s iPhone. Apple lists these unavailable features: ECG, irregular heart rhythm notifications, sleep tracking, Cycle Tracking, Medications, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, Blood Oxygen, Walking Steadiness, Shortcuts, Audiobooks, News, Double Tap, international roaming, and credit or debit card Apple Pay in Wallet.
Some features are also age-limited: high- and low-heart-rate notifications are for users 13 and older, Fall Detection is for users 18 and older, and children under 13 use move minutes rather than active calories for the Move goal. Review Apple’s current feature and age restrictions if a particular health capability matters to your family.

Choose by wrist and readability, not gender
- 40mm: The better first fit to try for a younger child or smaller wrist.
- 44mm: Consider for an older girl, larger wrist, or easier-to-read display preference.
- Try the case on in person if possible. A watch that is too large or heavy can be uncomfortable during school, sports, and sleep, and can catch on clothing or equipment.
Apple offers the SE 3 in 40mm and 44mm configurations. “For girls” is not a technical category: comfort, wrist size, durability, and personal style are the meaningful differences.
Pick a secure, comfortable band and useful accessories
Look for a soft, washable band with a secure closure, adjustment range for growth, and a color the child will keep enjoying. A spare band can be useful for sports, camp, swimming, or school. A case or screen protector may add protection, but avoid bulky charms or accessories that block the Digital Crown, side button, microphone, speaker, sensors, or access to Emergency SOS.
Before you buy and how to set it up
Pre-purchase checklist
- The parent has a compatible iPhone for setup and ongoing management.
- The child is in the parent’s Family Sharing group and has a separate Apple Account; the parent’s account has two-factor authentication enabled.
- If the child lacks an iPhone, the selected watch is GPS + Cellular and the carrier confirms the exact plan supports Apple Watch For Your Kids.
- The school permits wearable devices under its rules.
- The child understands charging, privacy, approved contacts, and emergency use.
Apple’s U.S. buying page lists Verizon, AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, and UScellular among national carriers offering Apple Watch service, but plan details and family-watch eligibility vary. Confirm monthly cost, activation charges, and eligibility directly with the carrier; some corporate plans do not support Apple Watch For Your Kids.
Family-managed setup sequence
- Erase the watch if it is not new, then turn it on and hold it near the parent’s iPhone.
- Tap Continue when prompted, then choose Add Family Member.
- Enter the family member’s Apple Account information and enable Ask to Buy if desired.
- Configure cellular service and Wi-Fi.
- Choose settings such as Location Services, Siri, Messages in iCloud, Emergency Contacts, Medical ID, Activity, and Health Sharing.
- Select approved contacts, set a Screen Time passcode, and configure Schooltime.
- Confirm it appears in Watch app → All Watches → Family Watches.
If activation or a feature fails
- Carrier missing: The carrier, plan, or corporate arrangement may not support the family-managed feature; confirm eligibility with the carrier.
- Watch will not activate: Check that it is cellular rather than GPS-only, Family Sharing and Apple Account settings are correct, the managing iPhone is updated, Activation Lock is removed on a used watch, and the carrier plan and coverage are eligible.
- Expected health feature is absent: Check Apple’s managed-watch exclusions and age limits before treating the absence as a defect.
When an Apple Watch is the wrong choice
- The school bans smartwatches or the child cannot keep one with her during the day.
- The family does not want recurring cellular service costs and the child has no iPhone.
- The child often loses devices, or the family does not have a compatible iPhone for management.
- The child only needs timekeeping, for which a basic watch may be simpler.
- The family wants more restrictive controls than Apple’s watch setup provides, or needs reliable multi-day power for outdoor trips.
A watch can be forgotten, lost, damaged, removed, or left uncharged. It should not be treated as a guaranteed way to reach a child or as a replacement for adult supervision and an agreed family safety plan.
