For most people who want music, calls and useful smart features in one pair of sunglasses, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is the strongest all-around choice. If you want audio without cameras, consider the Solos AirGo 3; if long advertised playback is your priority, compare it with the Lucyd Lyte 2.5. None is a substitute for waterproof sports eyewear or high-fidelity earbuds, and the right pick depends as much on fit and lenses as on sound.
Bluetooth sunglasses use small speakers in the temples, leaving your ears open to surrounding sounds. That makes them handy for walking, travel and casual listening, but wind and traffic can drown out music, and people nearby may hear it. The recommendations below reflect manufacturer specifications and available independent testing as of August 18, 2026; they are not based on hands-on testing for this article.
Quick picks: which Bluetooth sunglasses should you choose?
| Pick | Best for | Why choose it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 | Best overall | Combines open-ear audio, calls, cameras and smart features in familiar frames. | Higher cost, Meta app/account requirements and camera-related privacy considerations. |
| Solos AirGo 3 | Best camera-free audio option | USB-C charging, approximately 10 hours of music playback claimed, and lens choices including prescription options. | Verify the exact frame and configuration; the product range is less familiar to many eyewear buyers. |
| Lucyd Lyte 2.5 | Longest advertised playback | Lucyd claims up to 12 hours and offers prescription-ready designs. | Stock, exact model specifications and final prescription pricing can vary. |
| Bose Frames, used or remaining stock | Legacy Bose fans | A historically audio-focused design. | Bose no longer sells them directly; used battery condition and support need scrutiny. |
| Ordinary sunglasses plus open-ear earbuds | Audio-first buyers | Choose eyewear and audio separately, without paying for cameras. | Two devices rather than one integrated pair. |
For a summer trip, distinguish light rain or sweat from swimming, saltwater exposure or prolonged heat. No pair here should be treated as swim goggles.
Best overall: Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2
Choose the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 if you want sunglasses that also handle music, podcasts, calls and occasional photo or video capture. Ray-Ban describes open-ear speakers, microphones, phone connectivity and touch and voice controls for playback in its official FAQ. An independent Tom’s Guide review found music clear with adequate bass, while noting that it falls short of the best wireless earbuds.

Battery, price and charging
Ray-Ban lists a US price of $379 for the Gen 2 Headliner configuration on its product page. That is a listed configuration price, not a promise that prescription or upgraded lenses will cost the same. Ray-Ban claims up to 8 hours on a charge and up to 40 additional hours from the charging case; actual runtime varies with use, settings, temperature and connectivity. Camera recording, calls, high volume and smart features can make real-world use differ from a headline estimate.
Weather and heat limits
Ray-Ban’s FAQ gives the glasses an IPX4 water-resistance rating: suitable for light splashes, not submersion or extended liquid exposure. Avoid heavy rain, swimming and saltwater. Wipe the frame dry and clear charging contacts of sweat, sand or residue before charging. Ray-Ban also warns that extreme temperatures can affect performance and shorten battery life on its product page; do not leave the glasses in a hot car or direct sun on a dashboard.
App, account and camera trade-offs
Setup and many smart functions require a compatible Android or iOS phone, the Meta AI app and a Meta account; some features, languages and voice functions vary by region. Basic Bluetooth audio can work with the connected phone without actively using the app, but setup and smart features depend on it. Check Ray-Ban’s FAQ and Wayfarer configuration page for current compatibility and lens options.

The cameras and microphones are useful for hands-free capture, calls and supported AI features, but they are unnecessary hardware if your only goal is music. A recording indicator does not replace consent: follow local law and venue rules, and do not record in private spaces or places where cameras are prohibited. See the Ray-Ban Meta feature page for the product’s camera and microphone functions.

The Solos AirGo 3 is the better fit if you want temple speakers without photo or video recording. Solos’ current Argon 4S listing specifies Bluetooth 5.2, USB-C charging, Android and iOS support, approximately 10 hours of music streaming, and an IP67 rating. The listed Argon 4S model weighs about 34 grams; do not assume the weight or performance is identical across every AirGo 3 frame.
Solos offers prescription, polarized, photochromic and UV-protective lens configurations on that listing. Confirm the specific frame, lens and prescription range before checkout, since available options and price depend on configuration. The IP67 label is not a promise of protection from every beach hazard: do not treat the glasses as swimming or snorkeling gear, and rinse neither the frame nor its contacts in saltwater. Sand, sunscreen and repeated exposure can still cause trouble.

For its listed mix of playback time, charging convenience and camera-free design, the AirGo 3 is a sensible outdoor option. Its water rating is a manufacturer specification, not proof that it will remain safe through every type of water exposure.
Best long-playback claim: Lucyd Lyte 2.5
Lucyd claims up to 12 hours of battery life for the Lyte 2.5 platform, with open-ear audio, four speakers and prescription-ready styles on its product page. Treat that as a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed day of mixed listening, calls and assistant use. Volume, temperature, Bluetooth conditions and battery age all affect runtime; figures from different manufacturers are not directly comparable unless test conditions match.

Lucyd’s FAQ and tutorials describe Lyte models as IP56 splash-resistant and advise against submersion. Check the exact product listing and stock before buying: styles and availability can change, and prescription lenses can raise the final price. The Lucyd app adds voice and AI functionality; do not confuse those optional features with basic music playback and calls.

Are Bose Frames still worth buying?
Bose’s official Frames page says the glasses are no longer available for purchase from Bose, though the company continues support for existing owners. They are best treated as a used or remaining-stock option, not a current default recommendation. A second-hand pair may have a degraded battery, and charging accessories, replacement lenses, warranty coverage and exact model condition need checking before purchase.
Bose’s historical announcement describes earlier audio-focused features, but does not establish the condition or support status of any particular used pair. If dependable new-product availability matters, compare current Solos or Lucyd options instead.

Hiking, cycling and outdoor exposure
Solos’ IP67 listing is the highest stated rating among the current candidates here, but a rating alone does not prove a good sports fit. Check whether the temples stay secure, whether the frame works with your helmet, whether touch controls are usable while moving, and whether the lens coverage suits your route. Local cycling and driving laws vary; no product can be called universally legal for those activities.
Beach days and water activities
For beach walks, protect charging contacts from salt, sand and sunscreen. Keep the glasses out of the water, dry them before charging and avoid sealing a wet pair in its case. For swimming, snorkeling or repeated immersion, use purpose-built waterproof equipment rather than relying on an eyewear IP rating.
Running and sports
Prioritize stable fit, temple grip, coverage and comfort under a helmet over a headline battery figure. A pair can resist splashes and still slide during a run or feel uncomfortable after hours of wear. Buy from a seller with a workable return policy or try the frame in person when possible.
What open-ear music sounds like in practice
Temple speakers keep ears open, which is useful for awareness but limits immersion. Wind can overwhelm audio, while traffic and beach noise make music harder to hear. Nearby people may hear sound, especially at high volume; claims of directed or private audio do not guarantee that it cannot leak. Podcasts and calls are often more practical than bass-heavy listening, and open-ear sunglasses are not hearing protection.
If the environment is too noisy, raising volume is not always the answer: it can increase leakage and hearing risk without making the experience pleasant. Use earbuds when isolation or better audio quality matters, and use proper hearing protection around concerts, power tools or loud engines.
Quick Recap
Lens, fit and ownership checks before you buy
- UV protection: Confirm the exact lens provides the UV protection you need; do not assume every tint or replacement lens is equivalent.
- Glare and changing light: Consider polarized lenses for glare. Check whether photochromic lenses get dark enough for your bright outdoor conditions and whether they suit driving needs.
- Prescription: Verify the precise frame’s prescription range, lens thickness requirements and optical provider. A listed frame price may exclude prescription, polarized, high-index or photochromic upgrades.
- Fit: Temple electronics can add bulk or weight. Head width, nose bridge and prescription lens thickness affect comfort. A dead battery may leave the glasses usable as ordinary eyewear, but do not rely on that if your lenses or controls depend on electronics.
- Charging and repair: A case is convenient but may be proprietary; USB-C is easier to share with other travel gear. Check battery replacement, warranty terms, lens replacement and whether third-party lens installation affects support.
- Heat and water: Keep smart glasses out of hot parked cars and direct sun on a dashboard. Dry the frames before charging, especially after sweat or rain.
- Backup: Carry ordinary sunglasses on a trip in case your smart pair runs out of power, is damaged or overheats.
Which type is right for you?
- Choose Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 for the broadest mix of eyewear, music, calls, camera capture and smart features.
- Choose Solos AirGo 3 if camera-free audio, USB-C and its listed playback and water-resistance specifications are more valuable than a mainstream smart-glasses ecosystem.
- Compare Lucyd Lyte 2.5 if the up-to-12-hour claim and prescription-ready frame options appeal, while checking current stock and the exact model details.
- Choose ordinary sunglasses plus open-ear earbuds when audio quality, independent replacement and avoiding cameras matter more than one-piece convenience.
- Do not choose any of these as swim goggles or hearing protection.
