Choose Apple AirTag for an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 for a Samsung Galaxy device, and Motorola moto tag for a compatible Google Pixel or other Android phone. For a mixed iPhone-and-Android household, Chipolo POP is the most flexible choice, while Chipolo CARD and Pebblebee Clip 5 solve wallet and rechargeable-battery needs better than a standard circular tag.
These products are Bluetooth smart tags, not miniature GPS trackers. They can ring when your phone is nearby, or report an approximate location when another participating phone detects them. They cannot provide continuous live tracking for a vehicle, pet, child or person.
This guide covers products available during 2025. It does not include the second-generation AirTag or Moto Tag 2, both of which arrived in 2026.
Quick picks: the best smart tags in 2025
| Best for | Pick | Network | Battery | UWB finding | Water rating | Subscription |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone users | Apple AirTag | Apple Find My | Replaceable CR2032; about one year under typical use | Yes, with a compatible iPhone | IP67 | No for core finding |
| Samsung Galaxy users | Galaxy SmartTag2 | Samsung SmartThings Find | Replaceable CR2032; up to 500 days claimed | Yes, with a compatible Galaxy phone | IP67 | No |
| Pixel and non-Samsung Android users | Motorola moto tag | Google Find Hub | Replaceable CR2032 | Yes, with compatible Android hardware and software | IP67 | No |
| Mixed iPhone/Android households | Chipolo POP | Apple Find My or Google Find Hub | Replaceable CR2032; up to one year claimed | No | IP55 | No for core finding; companion features are free |
| Rechargeable keychain tag | Chipolo LOOP or Pebblebee Clip 5 | Apple Find My or Google Find Hub | USB-C rechargeable | No | IP67 / IP66 | No for core finding |
| Wallet | Chipolo CARD | Apple Find My or Google Find Hub | Qi rechargeable | No | IP67 | No |
| Independent cross-platform network | Tile Pro (2024) | Tile/Life360 | Replaceable battery; about one year claimed | No | IP68 | Core finding is free; some extras are paid |
Prices vary by country and retailer. The main US reference prices during 2025 were $29 for one AirTag, $29.99 for one moto tag, approximately $29.99 for one SmartTag2, $29 for one Chipolo POP, $39 for Chipolo LOOP and CARD at launch, $34.99 for Pebblebee Clip 5, and $34.99 for Tile Pro.
For most buyers, the choice is straightforward:
- iPhone: buy AirTag unless you specifically need a wallet card, louder alarm, rechargeable power or a tag that can later move to Android.
- Samsung Galaxy: buy SmartTag2, especially if you use SmartThings routines or have a UWB-equipped Galaxy phone.
- Google Pixel or another Android phone: buy moto tag if your phone supports UWB; otherwise compare Chipolo POP, Pebblebee Clip 5 and Tile Pro based on battery, sound and network preferences.
- Mixed household: buy Chipolo POP, LOOP or CARD, or a Pebblebee universal model. Configure it for either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, not both at the same time.
How smart tags actually find things
A smart tag is usually a Bluetooth Low Energy beacon. It broadcasts a short-range signal containing an identifier. Your phone can detect that signal, connect to the tag, show an approximate nearby distance, or make the tag play a sound.
#1 Best Overall
- FIND YOUR ITEMS ON FIND MY — AirTag (2nd generation) helps you keep track of what matters. Attach one to an item you want to keep track of using the Find My app.*
- EXPANDED PRECISION FINDING ON IPHONE AND APPLE WATCH — Get step-by-step directions to your lost item on iPhone and, now, Apple Watch.*
- ENHANCED SPEAKER — With a 50% louder speaker and a new, distinctive chime, it’s easier than ever to hear and find AirTag.*
- PING FROM FAR AND WIDE — Upgraded Ultra Wideband and Bluetooth chips allow you to find your items from even farther away than ever before.*
- SHARE ITEM LOCATION — Share AirTag location access temporarily and securely with trusted contacts, third parties, or over 50 airline partners if you lose something important.
There are two different finding experiences:
- Nearby finding: your own phone connects directly to the tag over Bluetooth. The app can normally make it ring. Some combinations of tag and phone also use ultra-wideband, or UWB, to provide direction and distance.
- Out-of-range finding: another participating phone detects the tag and anonymously relays an approximate location to the relevant network. The map position may be the last reported location rather than the tag’s current position.
This distinction matters more than an impressive Bluetooth-range number. A manufacturer’s claim of 90 m, 120 m or 500 ft describes a maximum direct connection under favorable conditions, usually in open space. Walls, vehicles, luggage, metal cases and underground locations can reduce it considerably. It does not mean that you can track the tag from 500 ft away in every building.
Out-of-range performance depends on the density of participating phones, their settings, how often they pass near the missing tag, and whether the tag is enclosed. A tag in a busy airport may be detected quickly; the same tag on an empty rural road, in a warehouse or inside a metal container may remain invisible.
Network size claims also need caution. Google announced a Find My Device network of more than one billion Android devices in 2024, but the number of Android devices in existence is not the same as the number actively reporting a particular lost tag. Samsung relies on opted-in Galaxy devices, and Tile relies on Tile or Life360 users and participating apps. There is no reliable reason to describe one network as universally fastest or largest without a defined, independent test.
1. Apple AirTag: the best smart tag for iPhone
Choose AirTag if you use an iPhone and want the strongest combination of network reach, nearby precision finding, battery convenience and accessory support.
The 2021 AirTag remained Apple’s relevant model throughout 2025. It works with Apple’s Find My network and includes Bluetooth, NFC and UWB hardware. Apple lists a 31.9 mm diameter, 8 mm thickness, 11 g weight, IP67 protection and a replaceable CR2032 battery. Full setup requires compatible Apple hardware and iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. See Apple’s AirTag specifications and AirTag setup and finding documentation.
Why AirTag is the iPhone default
- Find My network: Apple devices near the tag can report its approximate location when it is beyond your iPhone’s Bluetooth range.
- Precision Finding: a compatible UWB-equipped iPhone can provide direction and distance for a tag nearby.
- Replaceable battery: replacing a CR2032 is faster and cheaper than replacing the entire tag or waiting for it to recharge.
- Lost Mode and NFC: someone who finds the tag can tap it with an NFC-capable phone to see the contact information you choose to provide.
- No subscription: the core Find My features do not require a monthly plan.
- Large accessory ecosystem: cases, key rings, luggage holders and wallet mounts are widely available.
AirTag drawbacks
The tag has no built-in keyring hole, so attaching it to keys or a bag usually means buying a holder. Its round shape is also thicker and less convenient in a wallet than a purpose-built card tracker. AirTag has no native full-featured Android setup or tracking experience, so it is a poor choice for someone likely to switch from iPhone to Android.
The speaker can be hard to hear when the tag is buried in luggage, under furniture or inside a vehicle. AirTag is also an object-finding device, not a GPS tracker and not a suitable substitute for a live pet, child or vehicle tracker.

Apple allows an AirTag or compatible Find My item to be shared with up to five other people when account, device and software requirements are met. Shared users can help locate the item without receiving unwanted-tracking warnings for that legitimately shared tag. Details can change with software versions, so check Apple’s current sharing instructions.
2. Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2: the best tag for Samsung Galaxy
Choose Galaxy SmartTag2 if your primary phone is a compatible Samsung Galaxy device. It is not a generic Android tracker; its normal setup and strongest features are tied to Samsung’s SmartThings Find ecosystem.
Samsung claims up to 500 days of battery life in normal mode and up to 40% more in Power Saving Mode, although the latter reduces functionality. The tag uses a replaceable CR2032 battery, has an IP67 rating, and offers a manufacturer-claimed Bluetooth range of up to 120 m without obstacles. It also supports UWB-based Compass View on compatible Galaxy devices. Samsung’s SmartTag2 specifications and compatibility page lists the relevant phone and account requirements.
SmartTag2’s advantages
- SmartThings Find: the Galaxy Find Network can help report the tag when it is outside your phone’s Bluetooth range.
- Compass View: compatible UWB Galaxy phones can guide you toward a nearby tag with direction and distance information.
- Physical button: pressing the tag can trigger selected SmartThings routines or connected smart-home actions.
- Replaceable battery: useful for a tag expected to stay attached to luggage, keys or equipment for years.
- IP67 protection: better suited to wet bags, bicycles and outdoor use than an IP55 splash-resistant tag.
- NFC Lost Mode: a finder can tap the tag and view the contact details you have made available.
SmartTag2 limitations
A non-Samsung Android owner should not buy SmartTag2 merely because the tag uses Bluetooth. Samsung requires a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet, a Samsung account and SmartThings Find registration. UWB features require a compatible UWB-equipped Galaxy phone.

3. Motorola moto tag: the best Google Find Hub tag with UWB
Choose the original Motorola moto tag if you use a Pixel or another compatible Android phone and want UWB-based nearby finding through Google’s network.
The original moto tag was introduced in 2024 and remained a major Google-network option during 2025. It supports Google Find Hub, Bluetooth, UWB, a replaceable CR2032 battery and IP67 protection. Motorola’s moto tag finding guide explains both nearby Bluetooth/UWB finding and remote finding through Find Hub.
The launch US reference price was $29.99 for one tag or $99.99 for four, although sales and regional prices varied.

Google renamed Find My Device to Find Hub in May 2025 and announced UWB nearby finding, initially available with moto tag. That means reviews published before May 13, 2025 may describe a different Google finding experience from the one available later in the year. Google’s announcement is here.
UWB is not automatic merely because the tag contains UWB hardware. Motorola says precise finding requires a UWB-capable phone, enabled UWB, compatible app and firmware versions, and availability in the relevant region. Check the moto tag UWB requirements before buying.
Why moto tag is appealing
- It uses Google Find Hub rather than Samsung’s separate SmartThings Find system.
- Compatible Android phones can use UWB for a more precise nearby search.
- Its replaceable CR2032 battery and IP67 protection are practical for luggage, keys and outdoor equipment.
- The familiar circular design fits many third-party accessories.
- Motorola’s companion software adds phone-finding and camera-shutter functions on supported devices.
Why it is not automatically the best Android tag
Without a compatible UWB phone, the moto tag’s biggest differentiator disappears. A Chipolo POP may be better if a louder alarm and built-in attachment loop matter more; Pebblebee Clip 5 may be better if you prefer USB-C recharging.
Independent testing found inconsistent out-of-range performance among Google-compatible trackers compared with AirTag and SmartTag2. That is useful context, but it is not a universal measurement: results depend heavily on geography, phone density, settings and test conditions. See Android Authority’s network testing rather than treating the result as a guarantee for every city.
4. Chipolo POP: the best flexible choice for mixed households
Choose Chipolo POP when the tag may move between an iPhone and an Android phone, or when a built-in keyring loop and loud alarm are more useful than UWB.
Chipolo POP can be configured for either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub. It cannot use both networks at the same time. Moving it between ecosystems requires resetting or reconfiguring the tag, so “works with iPhone and Android” does not mean simultaneous dual-network tracking.
Chipolo lists an approximately 120 dB alarm, up to 90 m or 300 ft of direct Bluetooth range, IP55 dust and splash protection, a replaceable CR2032 battery lasting up to one year, and compatibility with iOS 14.5 or later and Android 9 or later with Google Play Services. The full specification is on the Chipolo POP product page.
POP’s strengths
- Platform flexibility: it avoids committing a mixed household to Apple, Samsung or Google hardware.
- Built-in attachment loop: no separate keyring holder is required.
- Loud alarm: useful when the tag is nearby but hidden under cushions or in a bag.
- Companion-app features: Chipolo provides functions such as Call Your Phone and free out-of-range alerts through its app.
- Replaceable battery: the tag does not have to be discarded when its first coin cell expires.
POP’s weaknesses
There is no UWB Precision Finding. IP55 means splash and dust resistance, not IP67-level temporary immersion protection. The 120 dB claim should also be treated as a manufacturer specification, not a directly comparable laboratory result: decibel figures from different brands may use different distances, environments and test methods.

5. Chipolo LOOP and CARD: rechargeable late-2025 alternatives
Chipolo introduced LOOP and CARD on August 27, 2025, so they should be treated as late-2025 choices rather than products available throughout the year.
Rank #3
- Smart Finder:The luggage GPS tracker makes it easy to manage your valuables. Working with the Find My app(IOS ONLY), you can quickly locate your items. It comes with one case, allowing you to attach the tag to your keys, wallet, backpack etc.
- Find Nearby:Use the Find My app to ring your luggage tracker when it's within Bluetooth range,or ask your Siri to find it for you.Click the 'Play Sound' Button, the tag tracker will make a sound 'di di di'. You can according to the sound find your items
- Find Far Away: When outside of Bluetooth range, use the Find My app to view your 'Item Locator's most recent location on a map. You can use the network and GPS of millions of Apple devices to locate it anywhere in the world.Reduce the loss of your items
- Share Your Items and Privacy Protection:The item finders tag lets your family view the location of your items (a feature for iOS 17).The chip in this Bluetooth tracker is MFi certified, guaranteeing that your location data is encrypted and protected
- Water Resistant & Replaceable Battery: Designed for outdoor adventures, this tracker can withstand rain, ensuring you can use it confidently in various weather conditions. Plus, it features a replaceable CR2032 battery that lasts up to a year
Chipolo LOOP
LOOP is a good rechargeable keychain tag for users who want Apple-or-Google flexibility without replacing a coin cell. Chipolo’s current product information lists Apple Find My or Google Find Hub compatibility, USB-C charging, IP67 protection, up to 120 m or 400 ft of direct Bluetooth range, approximately 125 dB sound and approximately one year of battery life. It has an integrated attachment design and is available in multiple colors. Chipolo’s product site is here.
There is a battery-life discrepancy that buyers should know about. Launch coverage described approximately six months of battery life, while Chipolo’s later comparison information says approximately one year. The exact regional SKU, firmware and test assumptions may explain the difference. Check the listing for the precise model before treating either figure as a guarantee.
LOOP is more water-resistant and louder on paper than POP, but it costs more and its internal rechargeable battery eventually has a finite service life. Like other universal Chipolo products, it can use Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, not both simultaneously.

Chipolo CARD
CARD is the better physical design for a wallet, passport holder or luggage sleeve. It uses Qi wireless charging, is compatible with either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, and Chipolo lists up to 120 m of Bluetooth range, IP67 protection, approximately 110 dB sound and approximately one year of battery life.
Launch reports listed approximately six months of battery life, conflicting with Chipolo’s later comparison information. It is therefore more accurate to describe the battery as rechargeable with a manufacturer-claimed life that varies by published source, rather than promise a fixed duration.
CARD has no UWB. Its slim shape also creates predictable trade-offs: it generally cannot match a larger key-fob tag for speaker volume or battery capacity, and Qi charging requires a compatible charging pad and correct alignment. See Chipolo’s CARD product information.
6. Pebblebee Clip 5: the best rechargeable universal clip
Choose Pebblebee Clip 5 if you want a built-in clip, USB-C charging and Apple-or-Google compatibility. Pebblebee lists a $34.99 price, up to 500 ft or 150 m of direct Bluetooth range, up to 12 months per charge, IP66 protection, 10 g weight and compatibility with Apple Find My or Google Find Hub. The tag also includes a bright LED and an integrated attachment design.
Pebblebee’s support documentation lists the alarm at 97 dB. That is lower than Chipolo’s claimed figures, but cross-brand dB numbers should not be treated as a standardized ranking. The Clip 5 product page and support specifications provide the current details.
Clip 5 trade-offs
- The rechargeable battery is not user-replaceable. Battery degradation eventually means replacing the tag.
- IP66 means dust-tight protection and resistance to powerful water jets, not intentional submersion.
- It can be paired with Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, but not both at once.
- The optional Alert personal-safety function should not be described as a cellular emergency beacon. Its usefulness depends on the exact service, phone connection, permissions and terms.
For a wallet, compare Pebblebee’s card-shaped model with Chipolo CARD. For keys and bags, Clip 5’s built-in attachment and USB-C charging are more convenient than a circular tag that needs a holder.
7. Tile Pro (2024): the best independent Tile/Life360 option
Choose Tile Pro if you want a platform-independent Tile/Life360 system rather than Apple Find My, Samsung SmartThings Find or Google Find Hub.
The 2024 Tile Pro works with iOS and Android through the Tile/Life360 app. Tile lists up to 500 ft of range, a 110 dB alarm, a one-year replaceable battery, IP68 water resistance, 12 g weight and a built-in keyring. Its US launch price was $34.99. The model details are listed in Tile’s model table, and the lineup pricing appears in Life360’s launch announcement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why Tile Pro remains relevant
- It works across iOS and Android through one independent app.
- Its claimed 500 ft direct Bluetooth range is among the highest in this group.
- The alarm is loud, and the physical button can help find a phone.
- It has a built-in keyring and a replaceable battery.
- The Tile Network provides an alternative to Apple, Google and Samsung networks.
The subscription catch
Tile’s core finding features work without a subscription: nearby ringing, last known location and Tile Network functions remain available. However, Smart Alerts, expanded location history, some sharing features and other conveniences require Premium or Premium Protect. Tile’s US pricing page lists Premium at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year, with Premium Protect listed at $99.99 per year. Check current pricing because prices and regional plans can change.
Rank #4
- Works with Apple Find My (iOS Only): Connect easily through the Apple Find My app—no extra app or subscription needed. Simply add the tracker to the “Items” section, then use your iPhone to find your valuables right away.
- Smart Location Trackers: Never lose track of your luggage, keys, bags or personal items again. These trackers work perfectly with the Find My app (iOS Only), giving you the ability to quickly find your Cyberdot items wherever they may be.
- Find Nearby: When your tracker is within Bluetooth range, you can use the Find My app to play a sound, or simply ask Siri to locate it for you. Tap the “Play Sound” button, and the tracker will emit a clear beep to help you quickly find your items by following the sound.
- Find Far Away: Once your tracker is beyond Bluetooth range, you can still check its last recorded position in the Find My app. Supported by Apple’s worldwide network and GPS, you can locate your items across the globe and effectively avoid losing them.
- Waterproof Design & Replaceable Battery: This sturdy tracking tag is water-resistant and ideal for outdoor use. It comes with a user-replaceable CR2032 battery that delivers up to one year of dependable performance.
Tile Pro has no UWB Precision Finding and does not contribute to Apple Find My or Google Find Hub. It is a sensible choice for users who prefer Tile’s independent app, but it is not automatically a stronger out-of-range option simply because its direct Bluetooth range is rated at 500 ft.
8. Other Tile form factors: Mate, Slim and Sticker
Tile’s other 2024 models are best understood as shape-specific alternatives:
- Tile Mate: a less expensive general-purpose tag with up to 350 ft claimed range, a three-year non-replaceable battery and IP68 protection.
- Tile Slim: a wallet-shaped model with up to 350 ft claimed range, a three-year non-replaceable battery and IP68 protection.
- Tile Sticker: an adhesive option for remotes, bicycles and objects without a keyring, with up to 250 ft claimed range, a three-year non-replaceable battery and IP68 protection.
The key disadvantage is battery end-of-life. The batteries in these models are not user-replaceable, so the tag becomes disposable when the sealed battery is depleted. Product details are listed by Life360’s Tile lineup announcement.
Which tag is best for each type of item?
Keys and everyday bags
AirTag, SmartTag2 and moto tag are the best ecosystem-specific choices because they combine replaceable batteries with broad platform networks and, on compatible phones, UWB nearby finding. Chipolo POP is better for a mixed household or anyone who wants a built-in keyring and louder alarm. Pebblebee Clip 5 and Chipolo LOOP are preferable if USB-C charging is more important than a replaceable battery.
Wallets and passport holders
Choose Chipolo CARD or Pebblebee’s card-shaped tracker instead of forcing a circular tag into a wallet holder. A card is thinner and purpose-built for this use. Expect compromises such as no UWB, a potentially quieter speaker and either Qi charging or a sealed rechargeable battery.
Checked luggage
AirTag is the most natural choice for an iPhone traveler; SmartTag2 suits a Galaxy traveler, and moto tag suits a compatible Google Android traveler. Chipolo and Pebblebee are useful for mixed households. Put the tag inside the luggage rather than relying on an exterior accessory, but remember that luggage walls, airport structures and metal containers can weaken Bluetooth signals.
Remote controls and objects without attachment points
Tile Sticker is designed for adhesive placement and is a practical choice for remotes or other flat objects. A standard tag can also work with an adhesive holder, but check the holder’s durability and whether it obstructs the speaker.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBicycles and cameras
A tag may improve the chance of identifying a last-seen location, but it is not an anti-theft system. Use it as a supplementary recovery aid alongside a lock, registration, insurance and visible identification. Do not enter private property or confront a suspected thief because a map pin appears there.
Pets, children and vehicles
Do not treat a Bluetooth tag as live safety tracking. It only updates when it communicates with your phone or a participating nearby device. For a pet, child or vehicle that needs continuous location reporting, use a cellular GPS tracker designed for that purpose, with the required mobile service and charging routine.

| Main reason to avoid | Requires Apple hardware and a holder for keys | Not a universal Android tag | UWB and network performance depend on compatible Android hardware and local device density |
Chipolo POP vs. Pebblebee Clip 5
These are the most useful universal choices, but they solve different problems. Chipolo POP costs less, has a replaceable coin cell, a built-in loop and a louder manufacturer-claimed alarm. Pebblebee Clip 5 costs more, recharges over USB-C, includes a bright LED and offers a built-in clip, but its battery is not replaceable and its listed alarm is lower.
Both can use Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, not both simultaneously. Pick POP for long-term serviceability and sound; pick Clip 5 for charging convenience and its attachment design.
Battery choices: replaceable, rechargeable or disposable
| Battery design | Advantages | Disadvantages | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replaceable CR2032 | Quick replacement; the tag can remain in service for years | Requires spare coin cells; coin cells are dangerous if swallowed | AirTag, SmartTag2, moto tag, Chipolo POP, Tile Pro |
| USB-C rechargeable | Less disposable waste; convenient if you already charge devices | Easy to forget; internal battery is often not replaceable | Chipolo LOOP, Pebblebee Clip 5 |
| Qi-rechargeable card | Suitable for thin wallet designs; no exposed charging port | Requires a Qi pad and careful alignment | Chipolo CARD |
| Sealed non-replaceable battery | Long claimed service interval and sealed design | The complete tag may need replacement when the battery expires | Tile Mate, Slim and Sticker |
Battery claims should be read as “up to” estimates. Temperature, sound playback, connection frequency and battery quality affect actual life. Also keep loose CR2032 cells away from children and animals because coin-cell ingestion is a serious hazard.

Water resistance: what the IP ratings mean
IP ratings are not interchangeable with the word “waterproof.” In practical terms:
- IP55: dust-protected and resistant to water jets or splashes under the applicable test conditions. Chipolo POP is IP55.
- IP66: dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets, but not intended for immersion. Pebblebee Clip 5 is IP66.
- IP67: dust-tight and capable of temporary immersion up to 1 m for 30 minutes under controlled test conditions. AirTag, SmartTag2, moto tag, Chipolo LOOP and CARD are listed as IP67.
- IP68: stronger water resistance, with the exact depth and duration defined by the manufacturer. Tile Pro, Mate, Slim and Sticker are listed as IP68.
A tag inside a suitcase has different requirements from one attached to a bicycle or dog collar. Water resistance also does not guarantee that the tag will continue working after damage, aging seals or exposure outside the manufacturer’s specified conditions.
Privacy, sharing and unwanted-tracker alerts
Smart tags are useful precisely because they can be detected by phones belonging to people other than the owner. That creates a privacy responsibility: use a tag to locate your belongings or an item that has been legitimately shared with you, not to secretly monitor another person.
Apple and Google support cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts for AirTags and compatible Find My and Find Hub trackers. These systems are designed to warn someone when an unknown tracker appears to be traveling with them, but alerts are not necessarily instantaneous. Google says its system considers factors such as physical movement over time, generally provides only one alert per tracker per day, and may not alert if the tracker is no longer nearby or its identifier has changed. See Apple’s unwanted-tracking guidance and Google’s unknown-tracker documentation.
If you receive an unexpected tracker alert:
- Follow the instructions in the alert and play the tracker’s sound if that option is available.
- Check your clothing, bag, vehicle and other belongings.
- Save identifying information, such as the tag’s serial number or screenshots, if it is safe to do so.
- Tell a trusted person and contact law enforcement if you feel threatened.
- Do not confront a suspected owner or thief alone.
Legitimate sharing is different from covert tracking. Google Find Hub permits sharing a tracker with up to ten people on Android 9 and later, according to Google’s tracker-sharing documentation. Use the platform’s sharing feature when a partner, family member or coworker needs access.
What to check before buying
- Name the exact network. “Works with Android” is too vague. Look for Google Find Hub, Samsung SmartThings Find or Tile/Life360.
- Check your phone’s UWB support. A UWB tag cannot provide directional finding if your phone lacks compatible UWB hardware or the required software.
- Choose the physical shape first for wallets. A round tag plus holder is thicker than a card tracker.
- Confirm the battery type. Replaceable cells extend service life; rechargeable tags are convenient but may eventually need replacement.
- Check the attachment method. AirTag needs a holder for a keyring, while POP, LOOP, Clip 5 and Tile Pro have integrated attachment designs.
- Read the IP rating. IP55, IP66, IP67 and IP68 describe different levels of tested protection.
- Do not compare dB claims literally. Manufacturer sound figures may use different testing methods.
- Check subscription terms. Core finding is free on the major platforms, but Tile’s Smart Alerts and other conveniences require a paid plan.
- Verify the model year. Late-2025 products such as Chipolo LOOP, CARD and Pebblebee Clip 5 may have different availability, pricing or published specifications by region.
What not to expect from any smart tag
- It is not a GPS tracker.
- It does not continuously transmit its location.
- It cannot guarantee recovery of stolen property.
- It may show an old location when no participating phone has recently detected it.
- Bluetooth range claims do not predict real-world crowd-network performance.
- A tag hidden in a vehicle, suitcase, building or metal enclosure may be difficult to detect.
- Anti-stalking alerts can be delayed and should not be treated as a complete personal-safety system.
For theft-prone items, use the tag as one layer of protection alongside locks, serial-number records, insurance and sensible recovery procedures. For live tracking, choose a cellular GPS product with an appropriate service plan instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one Chipolo or Pebblebee tracker use Apple Find My and Google Find Hub at the same time?
No. The compatible Chipolo and Pebblebee models covered here can be configured for Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, but not both networks simultaneously. Moving the tag to the other ecosystem requires resetting or reconfiguring it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is an AirTag better than a Samsung SmartTag2?
Neither is universally better. AirTag is the better choice for an iPhone because of Apple Find My and Precision Finding. SmartTag2 is the better choice for a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone because it uses SmartThings Find, supports Compass View and can trigger SmartThings routines.
Can a smart tag track a pet or child in real time?
No. Bluetooth tags only update when they connect to the owner’s phone or a participating nearby device. For continuous location and safety monitoring, use a cellular GPS tracker designed for pets, children or vehicles.
Do smart tags require a monthly subscription?
AirTag, SmartTag2, moto tag, Chipolo and Pebblebee do not require a subscription for their core finding functions. Tile also offers core finding without a subscription, but features such as Smart Alerts and expanded location history require Tile Premium or Premium Protect.
Which smart tag is best for a wallet?
Choose a card-shaped tracker such as Chipolo CARD or Pebblebee Card rather than placing a circular tag in a holder. Card trackers fit better, but they generally lack UWB and may have a quieter speaker or rechargeable battery trade-offs.
Can a smart tag help recover a stolen item?
It may provide a useful last-seen location, but it cannot prevent theft or guarantee recovery. Do not enter private property or confront a suspected thief based only on a tracker map; provide relevant information to law enforcement instead.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: buy for your phone ecosystem before comparing specifications. AirTag is the safest default for iPhone, SmartTag2 for Samsung Galaxy, and moto tag for a UWB-capable Google Android phone. Chipolo POP is the most practical mixed-household choice. For a wallet, choose Chipolo CARD or another card tracker; for rechargeable keychain use, choose Chipolo LOOP or Pebblebee Clip 5. Whichever tag you buy, remember that network participation—not the printed Bluetooth range—is what determines how useful it will be after the item leaves your immediate surroundings.
