Fratello’s June 15, 2024 roundup highlighted five black or black-accented watches, plus a Shinola pocket-watch wildcard. Its prices and release context are historical, not current quotes or proof of availability.
Five stealthy watches featured in 2024
The watches below are a style-led selection, not a controlled comparison or a hands-on test. Specifications and prices are presented as Fratello reported them in 2024; current specifications, prices and stock have not been verified. Blancpain × Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms Ocean of Storms
This collaboration brings a black, striped-strap look to a 45 mm dive-watch interpretation. Fratello described it as relatively light and reported the automatic Swatch System 51 caliber and €400 price in 2024. The case size is substantial, so the dark color alone does not make it discreet on the wrist.
Bamford Neprosolar
The Neprosolar takes a more technical route: an angular black exterior, a blue OLED readout activated with a button on the right side, and a solar panel on top. Fratello reported a £582 price and said the first batch had sold out when the article appeared. That does not establish current availability; contact Bamford London for an up-to-date answer.

Breitling Avenger B01 Chrono 44 Red Arrows
At 44 mm wide and 15.2 mm thick, this is a large, assertive chronograph rather than a low-profile stealth watch. Fratello described a matte black ceramic case set against a blue dial and straps, with rider tabs on the bezel, and identified the movement as the B01 caliber. The 2024 article quoted €7,950 through an authorized Breitling dealer.
Dior Chiffre Rouge
The 38 mm Chiffre Rouge is the smallest of the five listed by case diameter. Its black DLC-coated, asymmetrical case and patterned dial and strap supply the architectural look; red touches on the seconds hand, date window and crown ring break up the dark palette. Fratello reported €7,600 in 2024; its article did not state a movement caliber.

Seiko Prospex Solar Speedtimer SSC923
The SSC923 is the list’s solar chronograph: Fratello identified its V192 solar-powered movement and a hard-coated steel case measuring 41.4 × 45.9 mm. The 21 mm nylon strap closes with a folding clasp. The 2024 article reported a €700 retail price. Current listing and availability are unverified.
A wildcard: Shinola Great Americans pocket watch honoring Elijah McCoy
For a different take on stealth styling, Fratello included this 45 mm black DLC-coated pocket watch. The 2024 description calls out “Old Radium” lumed numerals, gold hands, red accents and a Sellita SW210-1 caliber. Fratello reported a $1,750 price on Shinola’s website at the time; that historical figure is not a current quote.

What makes a black watch practical to wear?
Case size matters as much as color
A dark finish can make a watch visually recede, but it cannot reduce its physical footprint. The Ocean of Storms is 45 mm, the Breitling is 44 mm and 15.2 mm thick, while the Dior is 38 mm. Those dimensions offer a more useful starting point for judging wrist presence than the word “stealth” alone.
Check dial contrast, not just the case
Stealth describes the look, not necessarily how quickly a watch can be read. A dark case may hide its edges in low light, while the hands, markers, bezel markings and display determine dial legibility. The blue OLED on the Bamford and blue dial on the Breitling add contrast; the red accents on the Dior and Shinola punctuate otherwise dark designs. The 2024 article does not provide comparative legibility tests.

Readers commenting on Fratello raised concerns about coating wear and described their experiences with aging on one older watch and better durability on another. Those are individual observations, not comparative test results. The article does not establish how these models’ coatings perform over time, so it cannot support a durability ranking.

Fratello also mentioned the Boldr Odyssey Black Dragonfish, G-Shock models including the MRG Frogman, and the ceramic Zenith Skyline Tourbillon as honorable mentions; they were not part of its five core picks.
