Bosch Sensortec’s Smart Connected Sensors platform is a B2B hardware-and-software system that lets device makers build wearable full-body motion tracking with less integration work. It uses the programmable BHI380 IMU-based smart sensor system, wearable reference hardware and software for movement analysis and feedback. Bosch’s platform supports up to eight sensor nodes, making it relevant to rehabilitation, sports and fitness, gaming, and wearable devices—not just step or repetition counting.

What Bosch Sensortec’s full-body motion-tracking platform is

Smart Connected Sensors (SCS) is a platform for manufacturers building devices that analyze how a person moves. Its core is the BHI380, a programmable inertial measurement unit (IMU) smart sensor system. Bosch combines it with a wearable reference design, wireless connectivity and software that can recognize gestures and activities, detect body movement, estimate relative body angles and provide coaching feedback.

The aim is to give device makers a starting point for motion-tracking products rather than requiring them to assemble every hardware and software component themselves. The system is intended to describe the quality or form of a movement as well as its occurrence—for example, how an exercise is performed rather than only how many repetitions were completed.

How the wearable system works

The official product selector describes a BHI380-based wearable housing with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.3, external flash and smart power management. A BMM350 magnetometer and BMP581 pressure sensor are optional components. Multiple sensor nodes can be placed around the body, with their measurements combined to estimate movement and relative body angles.

  • Sequential Logic Input (SLI)
  • Internal vertical pointability
  • surveillance cameras; security cameras; screens LCD
  • Up to eight nodes: Bosch’s 2024 announcement and product selector describe a network of as many as eight sensor nodes.
  • Time alignment: Bosch’s product selector specifies synchronization accuracy of 1 ms over 24 hours.
  • Raw data: The selector lists raw sensor-data streaming at up to 50 Hz.
  • Motion representation: Bosch describes creating a full-body avatar from six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) inertial data, alongside joint-angle information.
  • Custom recognition: The platform can support customizable gestures or movement patterns.

These are platform capabilities in Bosch’s product information, not a guarantee that every finished product will provide the same experience. The final number and placement of sensors, recognition features and feedback depend on the device maker’s implementation.

Where Bosch says the platform can be used

Rehabilitation and exercise

For rehabilitation, sports and fitness, a multi-node system can be used to assess movement patterns and offer qualitative feedback. That is distinct from a basic activity tracker that mainly records totals such as steps, duration or repetitions. Bosch identifies these fields as target applications; its platform information does not establish a clinical outcome or replace professional assessment.

Gaming and immersive experiences

Body-motion data can also provide input for gaming and other interactive applications. Bosch lists gaming and AR/VR among its target areas. Whether a particular product is suitable for a given experience depends on its implementation, including sensor placement, software and the application’s motion requirements.

Wearables and hearables

Bosch’s broader wearables portfolio addresses health and fitness tracking, gesture detection, orientation, positioning or localization, and air-quality monitoring. Named components in that portfolio include BHI360, BMI270, BMM350, BMA530, BMP585, BME690 and BMV080. These are portfolio examples, not interchangeable substitutes for the BHI380-based SCS system.

How the BHI380 platform differs from Bosch’s BMI5 launch

At CES 2026, Bosch introduced the BMI5 motion-sensor platform, a separate set of sensors aimed at devices such as XR products, robotics controllers and wearables. The BMI5 launch does not replace the BHI380-based SCS platform: the former is a motion-sensor product family, while SCS is a wearable multi-node system with a reference design and motion-analysis software.

What this means for watch and wearable buyers

Smart Connected Sensors is aimed at companies designing products, not a consumer watch or standalone app that buyers can simply purchase and use. A watch or fitness device could incorporate Bosch sensors, but the platform announcement does not identify a particular consumer watch using SCS or establish that a finished product is on sale.

For consumers, the practical takeaway is that motion-tracking features depend on the finished device and its software, not the sensor name alone. For manufacturers, the platform offers a way to prototype multi-point body tracking and movement feedback using Bosch’s reference hardware and software. Bosch’s product information does not specify a consumer price or publicly establish a retail route for the SCS reference design.

Bosch Sensortec’s wider direction

Bosch Sensortec says it delivered more than 1 billion MEMS sensors in 2024. Its company page also states a plan for 90% of its products to include integrated microcontrollers or software from 2027, and a target of more than 10 billion integrated-feature MEMS sensors by 2030. These are company-reported delivery data, plans and targets; they are broader business figures, not specifications or shipment figures for Smart Connected Sensors.
