Founded in Paris in 1775, according to the Maison, it offers collections ranging from the movement-forward Tradition to the formal Classique and sport-oriented Marine. Whether one is worth considering depends on the exact reference, its fit and features, and the evidence available for its price and condition—not the name alone.
What is Breguet known for?
Breguet says Abraham-Louis Breguet founded the Maison in Paris in 1775. Its current collection menu lists seven lines: Expérimentale, Reine de Naples, Tradition, Marine, Type XX, Classique, and Héritage. The brand also associates its history with inventions including the tourbillon, pare-chute, and perpetual watch; those are part of Breguet’s account of its legacy, rather than independently assessed claims here. Breguet’s official site also highlights silicon, magnetism, guillochage, engraving, and anglage in its present-day work.
Three collections make a useful starting point for understanding the range: Tradition emphasizes visible movement architecture, Classique brings together formal design codes and complications, and Marine takes a sport-watch direction. That distinction is a guide to where to look, not a substitute for checking a particular reference’s specifications.
Which Breguet collection should you consider?
| Collection | What defines it | Best starting point if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Tradition | Movement architecture and time display share the dial side, drawing on subscription and tact watches. | A mechanically expressive layout. |
| Classique | Breguet numerals, hollow apple-shaped hands, finely fluted cases, and guilloché or enamel dials; complications range from calendars to minute repeaters and tourbillons. | Formal styling and traditional watchmaking cues. |
| Marine | A sport-watch profile connected by the Maison to its founder’s naval appointment. | A sport-oriented design with technical features described by the maker. |
These are collection-level descriptions, not guarantees that every model shares the same materials, display, or functions. Check the exact reference for case dimensions, dial and case materials, winding system, water resistance, strap or bracelet, and legibility before deciding whether it suits your use.

Tradition: exposed mechanics
Breguet describes Tradition as a reinterpretation of subscription and tact watches, with the movement and time display together on the dial side. Its official page says nearly 700 subscription watches were sold, mostly between 1798 and 1805. The collection is the clearest place to start if you want the movement’s layout to be central to the design. See Breguet’s Tradition collection.
In a March 31, 2026 update, Breguet said it was revitalizing the range with Tradition 7037 and 7097, both featuring retrograde small seconds; 7038, with retrograde small seconds and a gem-set bezel and buckle; and 7067, with a dual-time display. The update also mentions Arabic numerals on certain models, Grand Feu enamel dials, revised movement finishing, and new straps. These details are specific to the references and update described, not a specification for every Tradition watch.
Classique: formal design and complications
Classique is the most direct starting point for Breguet’s traditional visual language: hollow apple-shaped hands, Breguet numerals, finely fluted cases, and dials that may use guilloché or enamel. The collection page lists complications including calendar indications, moon phases, minute repeaters, and tourbillons. Confirm the functions and materials on the exact model page; a collection name alone does not tell you which features a watch has. See Breguet’s Classique collection.
Marine: sport styling and claimed technical features
Breguet connects Marine to Abraham-Louis Breguet’s appointment as Horologer to the French Royal Navy in 1815. The company says the collection’s self-winding calibres are developed and assembled within its Manufacture, use silicon balance springs and escapements, and are tested in six positions for precision, reliability, and magnetic-field resistance. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent performance-test results. See Breguet’s Marine collection.

Other collections
Expérimentale, Reine de Naples, Type XX, and Héritage complete the seven collection universes listed on Breguet’s site. The available collection information here does not establish a reference-by-reference comparison of their dimensions, movements, materials, or prices. Review the official page for the specific model you are considering rather than inferring its details from the collection name. Browse Breguet’s collections.
What’s the difference between Tradition and Classique?
The main difference is where each puts the emphasis. Tradition makes the movement’s architecture and the time display part of the same dial-side composition. Classique puts more emphasis on a formal dial and case vocabulary—such as Breguet numerals, hollow hands, and fluting—with a broad range of possible complications.
Choose between them by looking at the exact watch, not just the collection label. Compare how easily you can read its display, whether its complication is useful to you, and whether the case materials and dimensions work for your wrist and routine.

It may be worth considering if you value the design and watchmaking features of a particular reference enough to justify its asking price. The collection descriptions explain the Maison’s intended character, but they do not establish comparative value, reliability, resale performance, or current market price. No single verdict applies across a range that includes formal, mechanically expressive, and sport-oriented watches.
For a meaningful decision, compare the exact reference with alternatives that meet the same needs. Verify the watch’s specifications and condition, account for service history and future servicing, and assess the seller and price against current evidence. The official collection pages are useful for maker specifications and positioning; they are not independent tests or proof of an individual watch’s condition.
How do you check a pre-owned Breguet watch?
Start with the exact reference and the watch in front of you. Breguet says its records, maintained since 1775 and preserved at Place Vendôme in Paris, document timepieces, commissions, sales, and owners. The Maison says those records can help with provenance research for certain historical watches, subject to conditions. This is a useful avenue to investigate, not a guarantee that every watch can be verified. An archive entry by itself does not establish the watch’s present condition or the seller’s legal title. Read about Breguet’s heritage and archives.
- Identify the reference. Match the seller’s description and documentation to the exact model, including its stated materials and functions.
- Compare the watch with maker information. Check the case, dial, hands, display, and movement details against the relevant official reference information. A mismatch needs a credible explanation.
- Request provenance and service records. Ask for available invoices, ownership documentation, and service history. Treat missing documentation as an unanswered question, not proof of wrongdoing or authenticity.
- Ask whether an archive inquiry applies. Breguet describes archive research as relevant to certain historical pieces and subject to conditions. Contact the Maison about eligibility and requirements rather than assuming every modern or vintage watch qualifies.
- Evaluate condition and seller separately. Have the watch’s condition and operation assessed by a qualified watch professional, and verify the seller’s identity, return terms, and title to the watch. A historical record cannot replace these checks.
What the available evidence does—and does not—tell you
Breguet’s official pages establish how the Maison presents its history, collections, and selected technical details. They do not independently establish how a given watch performs, whether its asking price is competitive, what it will resell for, or whether an individual pre-owned example is authentic and in good condition. Those questions require reference-specific, current evidence and, for a used watch, inspection of the watch itself.
