The vintage Breitling for Bentley Mulliner Tourbillon is an oversized, hand-wound chronograph with a visible tourbillon and an unusual 30-second central chronograph hand. It is documented with Breitling Caliber 18B and reference variants that differ across archive and auction records. This guide uses catalog and archive descriptions—not a claim of personal handling or testing—to explain what distinguishes the watch and what to check in its records.
What is the Breitling for Bentley Mulliner Tourbillon?
It is a vintage Breitling for Bentley model documented with a hand-wound tourbillon chronograph movement, Caliber 18B. Its central chronograph hand completes a revolution every 30 seconds rather than every 60 seconds. Auction descriptions also record a date and a 15-minute register on specific examples.
The name can be confused with Breitling’s later Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 Bentley. That is a separate model: Breitling lists the Premier as a 42 mm 18k red-gold watch with Caliber B21 and a 25-piece limited edition. Those specifications do not describe the vintage Mulliner with Caliber 18B. Breitling’s Premier B21 Bentley listing is useful for distinguishing the names, not as a substitute specification for the older watch.
How does the 30-second chronograph work?
Instead of taking a minute, the central chronograph hand makes one revolution in half a minute. Antiquorum’s 2006 catalog says this configuration allows time to be read with a precision of 1/6 of a second. That is the auction catalog’s explanation; it is not an independently reported timing test. The same lot description lists a 15-minute register, date, tachometer, slide rule, and visible one-minute tourbillon regulator.

The combination of a tourbillon and a chronograph makes the watch more mechanically elaborate than a standard time-only model, but the available records do not establish a measured accuracy advantage or describe real-world legibility or operation.

The diameters place it firmly in oversized-watch territory. The small variations among published measurements should not be treated as proof of different case designs without examining the specific watch and its documentation.

References, metals, and customization
BreitlingSource lists H18841, K18841, and J18841 reference variants. Antiquorum and Christie’s each document an example under L18841. Because the records use different references, it is more accurate to attribute each designation to its source than to treat one as the sole established reference for every Mulliner Tourbillon.
The archive says buyers could choose the precious-metal case, dial color, crocodile-strap shade, and wood veneer for the caseback. Antiquorum describes the model as made in very few examples, but the sources cited here do not establish a total production count. Individual watches may therefore differ in configuration, and a reference number alone does not establish the precise materials or options fitted to a particular example.

What auction records establish—and what they do not
Antiquorum records its platinum example as sold for USD 82,600 in New York on 14 June 2006. This is a historical result for that lot, not a current valuation or a guide to what another watch should cost.
Christie’s documents a separate circa-2005 platinum example accompanied by a Breitling international warranty dated 28 December 2005, a COSC certificate, product literature, presentation box, key, and outer packaging. Those are lot-specific records; they should not be assumed to accompany another example. The Antiquorum lot record and Christie’s lot record are useful for comparing documented configurations and provenance.

Neither the old auction result nor an archive specification establishes a present asking price, current market value, or the condition and authenticity of a watch now offered for sale. For a specific example, compare its reference and configuration with its paperwork, inspect the movement and case through a qualified specialist, and distinguish included accessories from items shown only in another auction record.

What to verify when assessing an example
- Reference and configuration: Record the reference exactly as marked and compare it with the seller’s documentation. The cited records include H18841, K18841, J18841, and L18841, rather than one universally documented designation.
- Materials and options: Confirm the case metal, dial, strap, and any caseback veneer on the individual watch; the model archive describes these as selectable options.
- Movement and functions: Have a watchmaker verify the Caliber 18B and the operation of the chronograph, registers, date, and tourbillon. The catalog descriptions establish what was documented on particular lots, not the present working condition of another watch.
- Provenance and accessories: Check that any warranty, certificates, box, or other accessories belong to the watch being offered, rather than relying on another lot’s inventory.
- Dimensions: Treat the roughly 48–49 mm diameter figures as source-specific and ask for measurements of the actual example if case size matters to you.
