Who acquired Universal Genève, and when?
In an announcement filed with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 12 December 2023, Stelux Holdings said its subsidiary had agreed to sell Universal Geneve SA to Breitling SA. The filing identifies Breitling SA as the purchaser and describes Universal Geneve SA as a Swiss company wholly owned by the seller’s group at the time. Universal Genève’s official history places the transaction in a broader ownership context: it says Stelux acquired the brand in 1989 and describes 2023 as a new chapter, naming Partners Group and CVC Capital Partners as acquirers. For the direct legal buyer in the disclosed transaction, the HKEX filing names Breitling SA. These descriptions refer to different levels of the ownership story and should not be collapsed into a single buyer label. Universal Genève’s official history
How much did Breitling pay?
The HKEX filing disclosed CHF 60 million in total consideration for the disposal of Universal Geneve SA, subject to adjustments under the sale agreement. The target was to become the registered owner of Universal Genève trademarks and related domains and accounts. Its stated activities included trademark licensing, watch supply-chain management and distribution, and international warranty and after-sales services for retail watches.

The filing also records a separate inventory transaction: a total purchase price of CHF 5 million, subject to adjustment, for inventory held by the authorized retailer. These are distinct arrangements with different scopes.

The inventory figures are historical counts reported in that same filing, not an indication of stock available today: 4,713 watches were then offered for retail sale, with another 673 watches—including pieces without bracelets and incomplete watches—not then offered for sale. What is Universal Genève known for?
Universal Genève’s official timeline traces the company’s founding to 1894 in Le Locle by Numa-Émile Descombes and Ulysse-Georges Perret. It records the headquarters’ move to Geneva in 1919 and highlights a series of watches that help explain the brand’s place in Swiss watch history. Universal Genève’s official history
- Cabriolet: introduced in 1933, according to the brand’s timeline.
- Compax: a chronograph introduced in 1936.
- Tri-Compax: introduced in 1944.
- Polerouter: developed by Gerald Genta in 1954.

What did the acquisition mean for the brand’s future?
In January 2024, the Federation of the Swiss watch industry FH reported that Breitling intended the two brands to live side by side while preserving their individuality, and that Breitling aimed to restore Universal Genève. That report documents the ambition expressed at the time; it does not establish a particular product release, launch calendar, or present-day retail availability. For collectors, the Polerouter is a useful historical point of reference, but the transaction announcements and brand history do not establish current new-production status, live stock, market prices, or the condition of any individual vintage watch. Those details need to be checked against a specific listing or current official announcement.
