The aim of this restoration was not to make a worn Seiko 7002 look new. It was to replace an aftermarket dial and hands with used original parts that better matched the watch’s already faded, scratched appearance, while having a watchmaker service its movement and repair its bezel click mechanism. The account is a personal restoration story—not proof that the watch’s wear was untouched, or that it is now safe to dive with.
Why restore the watch without making it look new?
In an August 13, 2021 account for Fratello, Nacho Conde Garzón describes his watch as a 1993 Seiko 7002. Its red-and-blue “Pepsi” bezel had faded toward pink and blue-gray, and the case showed corresponding wear. But the dial and hands were aftermarket replacements. He wanted the replacement parts to suit the watch’s existing character rather than refinish the whole watch to a box-fresh appearance. (Fratello’s restoration account)

The age of the bezel’s appearance is uncertain: Garzón says it already looked that way when he bought the watch, so he could not establish whether the fading was natural. That distinction matters when describing vintage-watch “patina.” Visible wear may be appealing, but its appearance alone does not prove how or when it developed. As Garzón put it, “The difference between damage and patina is quite a subjective one, and even I draw the line somewhere.”
What parts and work did the restoration involve?
Garzón reports sourcing used original Seiko 7002 dial and hand parts, along with a bezel click spring and ball bearing. He says he paid about €7–€12 for a dial and three hands, and about €20 for all the replacement parts he bought. Those figures are approximate prices from his 2021 account, not current prices or evidence of present-day availability.

According to the account, watchmaker David McKane installed the salvaged dial and hand set despite a missing dial foot. He also tore down, cleaned, oiled, and reassembled the movement; replaced seals and gaskets; and repaired the bezel click mechanism so it clicked unidirectionally. The article says the original models were bidirectional. These are the author’s descriptions of the work, not an independent inspection or a specification that should be assumed for every 7002 reference. (Fratello’s restoration account)
What this restoration does—and does not—establish
The story illustrates one way to balance preservation and function: retain a worn exterior, use parts intended to restore a more coherent original look, and entrust mechanical work to a watchmaker. It does not report a pressure-test result, so it does not establish that this individual watch is water-resistant now.

Seiko’s Cal. 7002 instruction manual describes an automatic diver’s watch with “200 METER WATER RESISTANCE.” That is the manual’s rating for the caliber instructions; it is not a certification of a decades-old watch after years of wear or after service. Present water resistance depends on the condition of the particular watch and should be verified by appropriate testing.
What Seiko’s manual says to check before diving
The manual lists several pre-dive checks. For a vintage 7002, these instructions are no substitute for confirming the individual watch’s condition and water resistance.

This approach suits an owner who values an aged appearance but wants the dial and hands to fit it better, and who is willing to have the watchmaker address mechanical condition separately from cosmetics. Before commissioning similar work, discuss the outcome you want and ask how the proposed parts and repairs affect originality and function.
- Preserving the exterior: Decide whether the existing case and bezel wear should remain, rather than assuming a full cosmetic refinish is necessary.
- Choosing replacement parts: Confirm the parts are appropriate to the watch’s reference and clarify whether they are original, used, or aftermarket.
- Addressing function: Ask what movement service, seal replacement, or bezel repair is included, and request a clear account of work performed.
- Establishing water resistance: If water use matters, ask whether the individual watch will be tested and what the result means for its intended use.
Garzón’s account describes a watchmaker-performed restoration, not a do-it-yourself procedure. It is a useful example of a preservation-minded choice, not a universal prescription for vintage divers.
