Bronze Watch Patina Project: Can You Speed Up Patina?

A Fratello Watches experiment reported visible patina on one bronze watch after short salt-water and ammonia-fume sessions—but it does not establish a safe, repeatable method for every model.

Yes, bronze watch patina can be accelerated, but the Fratello Watches project that inspired this title is one informal experiment—not a generally validated watch-care method. Author Bert Buijsrogge reported visible changes on a Pinion Axis after alternating a salt-water dip with exposure to fumes from regular 5% cleaning ammonia. He observed substantial patina after about seven minutes, but that timing is not a reliable forecast for other watches.

What the bronze watch patina project did

In an August 17, 2018 article, Fratello Watches author Bert Buijsrogge described trying to speed up patina on his Pinion Axis bronze watch. It had recently been cleaned and had only light patina before the experiment. Read the original Fratello Watches account.

  1. Buijsrogge dissolved coarse salt in water and dipped the watch in the resulting salt water.
  2. He put a small amount of regular 5% cleaning ammonia in a separate container, then placed the watch on a bottle cap above it so it was exposed to ammonia fumes rather than deliberately immersed.
  3. He carried out the experiment outdoors because ammonia can irritate.

Buijsrogge reported that the case darkened quickly. After one session of approximately seven minutes, he saw substantial visible patina; further short sessions produced more darkening and color variation. He described dark brown, red, and bright green-blue areas. These are his observations on one watch, not controlled measurements or a repeatable performance claim.

Why the patina was uneven—and why the timing is not universal

The result varied across the Pinion’s case. Buijsrogge noted stronger patina where water had collected near the lower part of the case. He also reported that patina came off sharp edges after an accidental dip in ammonia. His account says vinegar removed much of the patina and that later ammonia exposure left the watch cleaner, but those informal observations do not establish a guaranteed or safe restoration process.

Bronze is not a single uniform material, and a watch’s appearance depends on its alloy and conditions of use. Baltic identifies CuAl8 as the alloy in its Aquascaphe Bronze and says patina color and intensity vary with wear and environment. Luminox likewise says environment, wear, and wearer body chemistry affect patina on its bronze watches. Neither manufacturer’s guidance establishes how Buijsrogge’s procedure would perform on a different model.

What to check before trying to accelerate patina

  • Find the guidance for your exact model. Check the watchmaker’s care instructions and warranty terms before exposing a watch to salt water, ammonia fumes, vinegar, or another treatment. The cited sources do not establish compatibility with every alloy, coating, crystal, bezel, strap, seal, or movement.
  • Consider the whole assembled watch, not just its case. The Fratello account documents a single watch and does not verify the effects of the procedure on other components or construction.
  • Do not assume a method is warranty-neutral. Baltic’s warranty excludes certain damage tied to abnormal use, negligence, accidents, incorrect use, or failure to follow its directions. That does not prove this experiment would void a particular watch’s warranty; it shows why the model’s own terms matter.
  • Be cautious about advice from sellers or other general guides. BronZeiko describes saltwater, vinegar and salt, and ammonia vapor as methods some owners use, while warning against contact with the crystal, bezel insert, and strap. This is commercial guidance, not independent testing or a substitute for the watchmaker’s instructions.

Luminox describes patina on its own bronze cases as protective and recommends professional cleaning to reduce the risk of unnecessary damage. Its discussion of lemon juice or vinegar with salt concerns cleaning; it is not an endorsement of those substances as a way to accelerate patina.

Patina acceleration is different from bronze conservation

Conservation literature describes artificial patination of bronze objects as chemically accelerating corrosion to create selected colors and textures, using chemical families such as sulfides, nitrates, oxides, acetates, and chlorides. That broader conservation context is not a watch-safe recipe. A 2025 paper, “Effects of artificial patination procedures on the composition and structure of bronze patinas,” examines patina composition and structure; it does not establish a safe procedure for an assembled watch.

How long does it take for a bronze watch to patina?

There is no universal timeline established here. Buijsrogge saw substantial visible change after approximately seven minutes in one session on his Pinion Axis, but alloy, prior condition, exposure, and environment vary. Treat that duration as a detail of his anecdote, not a recommended treatment time or promise of what another watch will do.
