The decision is less about which is better than which kind of Calatrava suits you: restrained timekeeping or a useful complication.

How their designs differ
6119G-001: a traditional display with a distinctive bezel
The 6119G pairs an 18K white-gold case with a charcoal-gray, vertically satin-finished dial. Its defining detail is the guilloched Clous de Paris hobnail bezel. Faceted applied obus-style hour markers and Dauphine-style hands keep the dial focused on time, with subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. Patek Philippe fits it with a shiny black alligator strap.
The design belongs to a contemporary update of the Calatrava, but it also draws on the line’s history. In its April 2021 launch release, Patek Philippe traced the collection to reference 96 in 1932, which it described as the manufacture’s first model with a reference number. The release presented the 6119 as a new design and movement, with a slightly larger diameter, applied markers and a new manual caliber. Patek Philippe’s 2021 announcement is the source for that historical framing.

5212A-001: calendar information in a steel Calatrava
The 5212A has a steel case and a silvery opaline dial, with charcoal-gray hands and applied markers. Printed calendar lettering in a handwritten style gives the dial a more informal, information-rich character than the 6119G’s. Its light-brown, hand-stitched calfskin strap reinforces that difference in tone.
Alongside the time, the dial displays the day, date and current week number. Patek Philippe’s 2019 launch release explains that the week number appears with the corresponding month and provides further details about the calendar display and movement. Read the 2019 announcement.

Size, thickness and fit
The 6119G measures 39 mm across and 8.08 mm thick; the 5212A measures 40 mm across and 10.79 mm thick, according to Patek Philippe’s product specifications. The 6119G is therefore the thinner watch on the published dimensions, while the diameter difference is just 1 mm.
Those measurements alone cannot tell you how either will feel or look on your wrist. Case shape, lug geometry and individual fit also matter, and the official specifications do not establish comparative comfort or wrist presence. Try both if you can rather than treating diameter as a complete fit test.

Manual winding or automatic winding?
6119G: manual caliber 30-255 PS
The 6119G needs to be wound by hand. Patek Philippe lists a minimum power reserve of 65 hours, along with two barrels, 164 parts, 27 jewels and a frequency of 4 Hz. Its longer stated reserve does not make it automatic: winding remains part of owning this watch.
5212A: self-winding caliber 26-330 S C J SE
The 5212A winds itself through wrist movement in ordinary use. Its listed power reserve is 35–45 hours; Patek Philippe specifies 304 parts, 50 jewels and a frequency of 4 Hz. The calendar adds practical information, but the watch’s reserve is shorter than the 6119G’s stated minimum.

Which Calatrava should you choose?
Choose the 6119G-001 if you want
- A white-gold case and the hobnail-bezel detail.
- A thinner profile on Patek Philippe’s published measurements.
- A dial devoted to hours, minutes and small seconds.
- A manually wound watch with a stated minimum 65-hour power reserve.
Choose the 5212A-001 if you want
- A steel Calatrava with automatic winding.
- A calendar that shows the day, date and week number.
- A more information-dense dial with handwritten-style calendar typography.
- A watch whose calendar complication is central to its identity.
Neither specification sheet establishes which reference will be more comfortable, reliable or desirable to a particular owner. This is a choice between two different priorities: the 6119G’s slim, time-only presentation in white gold and the 5212A’s steel case and weekly-calendar utility.
