The Bulova Lunar Pilot is a chronograph for measuring elapsed time; the Accutron Astronaut is a GMT watch with a 24-hour display. Their space-era stories are distinct: Bulova associates the Lunar Pilot with Apollo 15 and the lunar surface, while Accutron traces the Astronaut to earlier aviation and space-program use. The modern examples differ just as clearly: cited Lunar Pilot references use Bulova high-precision quartz, while the Astronaut T reference 2SW8A002 uses a Swiss automatic GMT movement.
How the Lunar Pilot and Astronaut differ
| Question | Bulova Lunar Pilot | Accutron Astronaut |
|---|---|---|
| Primary function | Chronograph for measuring elapsed time | GMT with a 24-hour time display |
| Movement in the cited modern example | Bulova high-precision quartz; the 96B251 page lists 262 kHz | Swiss SW330 automatic GMT in Astronaut T reference 2SW8A002 |
| Historical association in brand sources | Bulova says a chronograph was worn on the Moon during Apollo 15 | Accutron links the Astronaut to Mercury-Atlas 9, X-15 pilots and the A-12 program |
| Example case size | 43.5 mm for 96K115; 45 mm for 96B251 | 41 mm for 2SW8A002 |
| Key buying distinction | Check the exact reference, dimensions and included straps | Distinguish the original tuning-fork history from modern automatic references |

What each watch does
Lunar Pilot: elapsed time
A chronograph adds stopwatch-style timing to the time display. Bulova’s official manual explains starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph, and identifies the subdials for elapsed minutes and 1/20-second readings: Bulova watch manuals. The precise operation can depend on the watch’s reference, so use its own manual.
Astronaut: a second time zone
A GMT watch is designed to show another time zone using a 24-hour display. Accutron describes the original Astronaut as using a 24-hour rotating bezel and a second 24-hour hand, along with a hacking function. The modern Astronaut T 2SW8A002 retains the GMT role but is a different movement proposition: its product page lists a Swiss SW330 automatic GMT movement, not the original tuning-fork mechanism.

Two separate space-era histories
Bulova’s Apollo 15 association
Bulova says a Bulova chronograph was worn on the Moon by Apollo 15 commander David Scott on August 2, 1971. Its 96B251 product page frames the story as part of Apollo 15, and a joint Accutron and Bulova announcement also connects the Lunar Pilot to that mission. These are brand-published accounts; the cited sources do not independently verify every detail of the lunar use. See Bulova’s Lunar Pilot 96K115 page, Bulova’s 96B251 page and the joint Accutron and Bulova announcement.
Accutron’s aviation and space-program account
Accutron says the Astronaut was first worn in space during Mercury-Atlas 9 in May 1963. In its account, the watch’s electronic operation, rather than a mainspring, made it suitable for aerospace use; Accutron also describes it as an official-issue watch for USAF X-15 pilots and says CIA pilots in the Lockheed A-12 program later used it. Those details are Accutron’s historical claims, not independent confirmation from the cited brand material. The 2023 announcement also reports that the partnership involved 46 NASA missions and 2,000 precision instruments and timing devices; those figures, too, are the brands’ report.

What current product pages specify
Bulova Lunar Pilot references
Bulova’s U.S. product page for reference 96K115 lists a 43.5 mm stainless-steel case, 20 mm lug width, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and 50 m water resistance, along with a high-precision quartz movement. The U.S. page showed a price of $895 when retrieved; price and stock are volatile, so check the live listing for current terms.
Bulova Canada’s page for reference 96B251 instead lists a 45 mm stainless-steel case, 20 mm lug width, a 262 kHz movement, sapphire crystal and 50 m water resistance. That listing specifies two straps: black leather and black nylon with a commemorative patch. These are details of the Canadian-listed 96B251, not a standard package for all Lunar Pilot references.

Accutron Astronaut references
Accutron’s page for Astronaut T reference 2SW8A002 describes a limited run of 300 numbered watches, a 41 mm stainless-steel case, Swiss SW330 automatic GMT movement, 56-hour power reserve, sapphire crystal, Super-LumiNova and a day/night bezel. Which one fits your needs?
- Choose the Lunar Pilot if you want a chronograph to time elapsed intervals and prefer the cited high-precision quartz examples. Compare references carefully: 96K115 and 96B251 differ in case diameter, and the 96B251 page specifies its own two-strap package.
- Consider the Astronaut if a GMT display is more useful than a chronograph. For the cited Astronaut T, reference 2SW8A002, expect an automatic GMT movement; do not assume it reproduces the historical tuning-fork movement.
- For either watch, compare the exact reference, case dimensions, movement and market-specific product page rather than relying on the line name alone.
What to know about original tuning-fork Astronauts
Accutron’s FAQ says it cannot currently service original tuning-fork watches because parts are unavailable. This limitation is specifically about original tuning-fork models; it does not establish that independent repairers cannot service them or that modern Astronaut references share the same service constraint. For current products, Accutron directs customers to authorized retailers to confirm availability: Accutron FAQ.
