Bulova’s current Snorkel 98B445 is a separate, smaller quartz model rated to 100 m / 333 ft—not the returning 666-foot Oceanographer.
Why is the Bulova Oceanographer called the Devil Diver?
Bulova says it introduced the Oceanographer in 1972. The original watch displayed “666 feet” on its dial in place of the more traditional 200 metres, and Bulova says that unusual marking gave rise to the “Devil Diver” nickname. The number is a depth rating, not a reference to a separate model or certification.
In a 2019 release, Bulova said 300 feet was common at the time the original watch appeared. That is the brand’s historical context, rather than an independently established industry statistic. What does 666 feet mean on the modern Oceanographer?
Bulova’s current Oceanographer Devil Diver 96B322 is specified for 200 m / 666 ft water resistance. The two figures are Bulova’s paired metric and imperial ratings for the watch. The 666-foot wording echoes the original dial and nickname; it is not itself the watch’s dive-watch certification.

Bulova’s manual separately identifies the 96B322 as certified to ISO 6425, a dive-watch standard. It also says to screw the crown back into its normal position to ensure optimal 200 m water resistance. Oceanographer Devil Diver 96B322 vs. Snorkel 98B445
The names can be confusing because the Snorkel shares design cues with the Oceanographer. Bulova’s current specifications, however, describe two different watches:
