A pre-owned Omega Speedmaster has no single accuracy figure you can safely assume. The exact reference and caliber matter, and a certification tolerance describes a defined test—not necessarily how that individual watch runs today. Before buying, ask for its reference, service history and a recent rate check with the measurement conditions stated.
What accuracy do Omega Speedmasters have?
It depends on the watch. METAS says a finished mechanical watch qualifying as a Master Chronometer must meet a rate accuracy criterion of 0 to +5 seconds per day under METAS-N001. Omega’s customer FAQ gives size-dependent categories: 0 to +5 seconds per day for movements greater than 26 mm; 0 to +6 for movements greater than 20 mm and up to 26 mm; and 0 to +7 for movements up to 20 mm. The familiar 0/+5 figure is not universal across every movement size listed by Omega. METAS’s watch-certification guidance and Omega’s FAQ describe these criteria.
These figures are certification criteria, not a guarantee that a second-hand watch still performs within them. A watch’s condition can change after certification through magnetism, shock, wear or service history. Check the individual watch rather than relying on its original certification status.
Chronometer and Master Chronometer are not the same test
METAS distinguishes the movement test for an ISO 3159 chronometer from Master Chronometer testing of the finished watch. Its page lists −4 to +6 seconds per day as the ISO 3159 average daily rate deviation range for a chronometer movement, while the finished-watch Master Chronometer criterion is 0 to +5 seconds per day. Do not confuse the movement-test range with the finished-watch criterion.

Check the exact model before applying a tolerance
Omega’s manual for reference 310.32.42.50.04.001 describes eight Master Chronometer tests and the 0/+5 seconds-per-day criterion in that model’s context. It is not evidence that every Speedmaster generation or caliber is Master Chronometer certified. Confirm the exact reference and its documentation. Omega’s manual for reference 310.32.42.50.04.001 gives the model-specific details.
How to check a pre-owned Speedmaster before buying
- Identify the watch. Record its exact reference and caliber, then compare them with the watch, papers and service records. Omega says serial information can help identify a current model, but a serial match is an important indication—not an authenticity guarantee.
- Ask for dated service evidence. Request an invoice or warranty that identifies who serviced the watch and what work was done. Fratello author Jorg Weppelink offers a personal rule of thumb: without proof, assume a watch has not been serviced; he suggests treating an invoice older than three to five years as a reason to budget for service. This is editorial advice, not an Omega-mandated service interval. Weppelink’s buyer guidance was published on 2021-04-08.
- Request a rate check with conditions. Ask how the rate was measured, in which position or positions, and at what winding state. A watch timegrapher can provide a useful rate and amplitude screening measurement, but it cannot establish every aspect of a movement’s health.
- Arrange an inspection if the risks warrant it. A qualified watchmaker can open and examine the movement; a timing-device reading alone cannot reveal every lubrication, wear or parts issue. Weppelink describes very slow running—around −30 seconds per day or worse—as a strong service signal. That is specialist guidance, not a factory tolerance or a universal rule for every vintage caliber.
- Check originality and serviceability. If parts may be non-original, altered or mismatched, ask an Omega service centre or qualified independent watchmaker whether the reference can be serviced and whether parts are available. Omega says it may require paid replacement of counterfeit, altered or non-matching components, or refuse service in relevant cases. Service terms may vary by market. Omega’s Hong Kong FAQ explains its guidance on service eligibility and components.
How to compare two used Speedmasters
Compare the watches across the same practical factors rather than choosing by a rate figure alone:
Rank #2
- Stainless steel case
- Black dial
- Swiss-automatic movement
- Case diameter: 40mm
- Water resistant to 330 feet
- Exact reference and caliber
- Certification documentation and papers
- Measured rate and the conditions of the measurement
- Dated service records and the work performed
- Originality, visible condition and inspection findings
- Likely service exposure relative to the asking price
Omega says pre-owned value varies with functional and aesthetic condition, supply and demand, and country; it does not provide a valuation. Nor is there a representative published study establishing the daily accuracy of pre-owned Speedmasters as a group. Certification limits should not be presented as used-watch population averages.
