Ceramic watches are appealing because their cases and bracelets can resist everyday surface scratches while staying relatively light and offering distinctive finishes. But ceramic is not unbreakable: a hard impact can damage it, and the protection applies only to the components actually made from ceramic. Choose by exact reference, construction, fit, water resistance, movement and service terms—not by the word “ceramic” alone.
Are ceramic watches scratch resistant?
Generally, ceramic watch components are highly resistant to everyday surface scratching, but “scratch-resistant” does not mean scratch-proof. The material and its properties vary by maker, and a ceramic case, bezel or bracelet may have different exposure to wear than a crystal.

Rado says its high-tech ceramic is sintered at 1,450°C and is five times harder than stainless steel. Rado also gives approximate hardness figures of 1,250 Vickers for high-tech ceramic, 1,750 Vickers for Ceramos and 2,500 Vickers for sapphire crystal. These are Rado’s own material claims, not independent comparative test results. See Rado’s high-tech ceramic information and its FAQ.
CHANEL describes its proprietary titanium ceramic as highly scratch resistant and close to sapphire in hardness. The brand says its formula took four years of research and development and is patented and exclusive to CHANEL. That description concerns CHANEL’s material; it should not be generalized to every ceramic watch. Details are in CHANEL’s watch FAQ.

Can a ceramic watch break?
Yes. Hardness helps resist surface wear, but it does not make a watch immune to impact. Rado cautions that its watches can break if dropped and puts the distinction plainly: “Our watches are hard but not indestructible.” A fall or sharp blow can be a more relevant risk than ordinary contact with other objects.
Before buying, ask the manufacturer or an authorized retailer how damage to the specific case, bezel or bracelet is assessed, and what repair or replacement options and costs apply. Do not assume a damaged ceramic component can be repaired like a metal one, or that warranty coverage includes impact damage.

Five ceramic watches to consider
These are useful starting points, not a ranked “best” list. A model family can include multiple sizes, materials and configurations, and regional availability changes. Verify the exact reference and current specifications with the brand or an authorized retailer before purchase.
1. TUDOR Black Bay Ceramic
TUDOR’s listed Black Bay Ceramic reference has a 41 mm ceramic case and ceramic bracelet; the product page also specifies a hybrid leather-and-rubber strap. Check which configuration is offered for the exact reference in your market, rather than assuming every version has the same bracelet. The brand’s official page is for reference M7941A1ACNU-0001: TUDOR Black Bay Ceramic. Compare the full specifications, price and service terms for the local listing.

2. CHANEL J12
The J12 is an established ceramic watch family, and CHANEL’s proprietary titanium ceramic is a distinctive part of its material story. Since the family includes different references, select a specific current model and check whether its case, bracelet or both use ceramic. CHANEL’s watch FAQ explains the material; its care guidance recommends replacing protective seals every five years to help ensure optimal water resistance. That interval is CHANEL guidance, not a universal schedule for all watches.
3. A Rado high-tech ceramic model
Rado makes multiple watches using high-tech ceramic, so choose a precise reference based on the style, dimensions and components you want. Confirm whether ceramic is used for the case, bracelet or both, then check the crystal, water resistance, movement, warranty and regional price. Rado’s ceramic campaign page describes its material, while the FAQ sets out its caution about impact damage.

4. Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon
The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon is identified as a ceramic-watch example in a 2026 overview, but that alone does not establish a current reference or its exact component materials. Treat the family name as a lead, not a complete specification. Before considering a particular watch, confirm its reference, current availability, case and bezel materials, dimensions, movement, water resistance and price through Omega or an authorized retailer.
5. Hublot Big Bang Integral Ceramic
The Big Bang Integral Ceramic is another candidate family, but a family name does not establish which exact reference is currently available or how its components are constructed. Check the manufacturer’s current listing for the chosen reference, including case and bracelet materials, dimensions, movement, water resistance, warranty, service arrangements and local price before treating it as a match.

How to choose the right ceramic watch
Check which parts are ceramic
“Ceramic watch” can mean a ceramic case, a ceramic bracelet, a ceramic bezel or a combination. A ceramic bezel does not mean the case and bracelet share the same scratch resistance. Identify each component in the exact reference’s specification sheet.
Judge fit from more than diameter
Compare case diameter, thickness, weight and lug-to-lug length where the maker publishes them. Diameter alone cannot tell you how a watch will sit on your wrist. A bracelet can also change the feel and balance compared with a strap, so check the precise configuration.
Separate crystal and case claims
Check the crystal material separately from the case and bezel. A hardness figure or scratch-resistance claim for ceramic does not describe the crystal, and a sapphire crystal does not make the case scratch-proof.
Compare practical ownership details
- Water resistance: Check the rating for the exact reference and follow the maker’s inspection and seal guidance.
- Movement: Compare movement type, power reserve and any stated certification rather than assuming ceramic determines timekeeping performance.
- Warranty and service: Confirm coverage, authorized service options and how impact damage to ceramic parts is handled.
- Price and availability: Check the current local price and whether the precise reference is available in your region.
What ceramic changes—and what it does not
Ceramic’s appeal is the combination of scratch resistance, low weight and a range of finishes. The trade-off is that hardness is not toughness: the material can still be vulnerable to impact. The right choice depends on whether the specific watch’s construction, fit, appearance and service arrangements suit the way you will wear it.
