Double tourbillon watches put two rotating tourbillon structures—or, in some designs, rotations on two axes—on display. The label does not describe one standardized mechanism, and it is not proof that a watch will keep better time on the wrist. The most useful way to compare these watches is to start with how each mechanism moves, then weigh its documented specifications against fit, legibility and the details a seller can verify.
What does a double tourbillon do?
A conventional tourbillon places the escapement and balance wheel inside a mobile cage. Breguet’s official explanation describes the historical aim: in a pocket watch held vertically, gravity could affect the regulating organ, and rotating the cage was intended to average positional effects. That history explains the mechanism’s rationale; it does not establish that every modern wristwatch tourbillon is more accurate in ordinary wear.
“Double tourbillon” can refer to different arrangements. In Greubel Forsey’s Double Tourbillon 30° construction, an inclined inner cage sits inside a larger outer cage. The inner cage is angled 30° and makes one rotation per minute; the outer cage makes one rotation every four minutes. Greubel Forsey says the arrangement is intended to average positional errors due to gravity in usual wristwatch positions. That is the maker’s stated performance rationale, not independent comparative evidence that the watch outperforms other watches.
A double-axis tourbillon takes a different approach: its cage rotates on two axes. Jacob & Co.’s Astronomia Tourbillon Baguette product page describes a double-axis tourbillon on one satellite arm. It should not be mistaken for Greubel Forsey’s nested, inclined-cage system.

Are double tourbillon watches more accurate?
The historical tourbillon idea addresses positional effects on the regulating organ, but that rationale alone does not show how a particular wristwatch performs across real-world wear. Greubel Forsey says its nested 30° arrangement averages positional errors due to gravity in usual wristwatch positions. The cited material does not provide independent comparative testing establishing an accuracy advantage for that model over other watches, or for double tourbillons as a category.
For a buying decision, treat accuracy as a claim to verify for the exact watch, not an automatic benefit of having two cages or two axes. Ask what evidence the seller or maker can provide for the specific reference and condition; do not infer a daily-rate result from the mechanism’s name.

Because these watches differ in construction and their published specifications are uneven, assess the individual reference rather than buying by category name alone.
- Identify the mechanism. Confirm whether the watch uses nested cages, a double-axis arrangement, or another construction. Ask for the exact reference and maker documentation; “double tourbillon” by itself is not a complete description.
- Check fit against the case dimensions. The documented examples include a 47.5 mm Greubel Forsey Technique and a 45 mm Roger Dubuis RDDBEX0900. Diameter is only one part of fit, so try the exact watch on and assess how its case and movement display sit on your wrist.
- Decide whether the display works for you. Look at the watch in the conditions in which you expect to wear it. Consider whether the moving mechanism makes the time easy to read, and whether the dial’s layout and finishing suit your preferences.
- Match the reserve and water-resistance figures to your needs. The listed reserve figures range from 50 hours for the RDDBEX0900, according to AskMe.Watch, to 120 hours for the Double Tourbillon 30° Technique, according to Greubel Forsey. The published water-resistance figures for those two examples are 30 m.
