The strongest 1990s Breitling choices depend on what you want from a vintage watch: the Navitimer Aviastar A13024 is a substantial sports chronograph, the Old Navitimer Mécanique offers a hand-wound movement and Japan-market limited editions, the Montbrillant Spatiographe has an unusually displayed minute counter, and the Chronomat Blackbird brings a distinctive black-and-red design. These are different kinds of appeal, not an objective ranking; each watch’s reference, condition and originality matter.

What makes each watch distinctive?
Navitimer Aviastar A13024: a large, versatile chronograph
Fratello dates the Aviastar’s introduction to 1996 and its production end to 1998. The guide reports a 41.5 mm stainless-steel case and 16.4 mm thickness, with a black dial and unidirectional black bezel at launch. Early buyers could choose a leather strap or five-link Pilot bracelet; later executions included a Navitimer bracelet and brown or blue dial-and-bezel combinations. The automatic Calibre 13 is based on the Valjoux 7750. That range of executions makes reference- and variant-level identification important: the dial or bezel color alone does not tell the whole story.
Old Navitimer Mécanique: hand-wound and edition-specific
The guide reports a 1995 Japan-market A11022 limited edition of 250 pieces. For 1998 it identifies two A11022.1 editions: 200 white-dial watches and 400 black-dial watches. The A11022.1 is reported as a 41.5 mm steel watch with a manual-winding Calibre 1873 based on the Lemania 1873. These are historical production-count claims attributed to Fratello, not proof that a particular listing is genuine or belongs to a particular edition. Match the serials, dial, movement and documentation to the exact claimed variant before relying on an edition description.

Montbrillant Spatiographe A36030: a minute counter you can see through a window
The Spatiographe is reported as part of the Montbrillant collection from 1997 to 2002, so the model’s stated run extends beyond the 1990s. Its signature feature is a rotating minute disc displayed through a large window at 9 o’clock, rather than a conventional minute subdial. Fratello gives the case as 41.5 mm and identifies Calibre 36 as an ETA 2892-A2 integrated with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module. The Montbrillant line itself began earlier in the decade and expanded into different sizes and functions; do not treat every Montbrillant as a Spatiographe or as a 1990s production.
Chronomat Blackbird: dark finishing and red details
Fratello dates the Blackbird design to 1995 and links its name and look to the Lockheed SR-71. Its described combination is a black dial and subdials, red accents, and brushed rather than polished finishing. The article says the early Blackbird was part of the regular Chronomat line rather than having a unique reference; it identifies A13350 as the 1999 COSC-certified update. A seller’s use of “Blackbird” is therefore not enough to establish the exact version: check the reference and specific dial and finishing details against the watch itself.

How do these watches fit into Breitling’s 1990s history?
Breitling’s own history places the Aerospace’s introduction in 1985, describing it as a titanium watch with analog and digital displays and crown-operated functions. The Emergency followed in 1995 with a 121.5 MHz distress transmitter. Breitling also records an Emergency accompanying Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones on the 1999 Orbiter 3 around-the-world flight. These watches show that the decade’s Breitling story reached beyond mechanical chronographs, even though the four models above are the focus of this buying guide. Breitling’s Professional watches history provides the brand’s account.
For a broader view of the brand’s chronograph heritage, see Breitling’s history of its iconic chronographs. Brand histories are useful for context, while the identity and condition of an individual vintage watch still need to be assessed on their own evidence.

What should you check before buying a 1990s Breitling?
Decades of servicing can leave a watch with replaced parts, and fake or “Franken” watches—pieces assembled from components that do not belong together—are known risks. The available model guide does not provide a complete authentication checklist, so treat the following as a practical starting point, not a guarantee of authenticity.
- Pin down the exact reference and variant. Compare the reference, dial layout, logo, bezel and bracelet or strap execution with reliable documentation for that model. Breitling executions can differ in these details.
- Ask for clear evidence of what is inside. Request legible serial and reference information, movement photographs where appropriate, and documentation supporting any limited-edition claim. For an Old Navitimer Mécanique, verify the claimed dial and edition alongside the manual-winding movement.
- Assess originality and condition separately. A replaced part may be disclosed and acceptable to you, but it affects whether the watch remains in its original configuration. Ask which components have been changed and why.
- Review service history and provenance. Seek dated service records and a consistent ownership or sales history where available; missing paperwork is not by itself proof of a problem, but it leaves more to verify.
- Use a qualified vintage-watch expert. Have the watch and its claims examined before purchase when you cannot confidently verify the reference, movement, parts and condition yourself.
How should you think about price and rarity?
The 2021 Fratello article gives an approximate Blackbird market estimate of €2,500–€4,000, but that is an article-era estimate, not a current valuation. No live-market evidence establishes today’s prices or availability for these models. The historical 1996–2009 BreitlingSource list can provide period list-price context for some watches, including Old Navitimers, but it is not a resale-price guide: BreitlingSource historical price list (PDF).

Limited-edition counts can make a particular Old Navitimer variant appealing, but rarity does not establish authenticity, condition or value. For any of these watches, compare like with like: exact reference and execution, originality, service condition, documentation and provenance matter more than a broad model name.

The Fratello guide also notes the Colt, other Old Navitimer and Montbrillant models, Callisto, B01 and Superocean as possibilities. That range is a reminder that “best” depends on what you value: the four watches here are distinctive starting points, not a definitive list of the decade’s best or only choices.
