Iwate-pattern dial and blue GMT hand suited his taste better. His 2019 article describes one owner’s decision and experience—not a universal ranking of the two watches.
Why Broer chose the SBGJ201 over the Snowflake
In his February 8, 2019 account, Broer says he had expected to buy the SBGA211 Snowflake. He was drawn to its textured dial and Spring Drive movement, but two details gave him pause: the titanium construction felt too light for his preference, and he found the power-reserve indicator visually cluttering on a self-winding watch.

At Grand Seiko’s Knightsbridge boutique in summer 2017, he saw the SBGJ201 beside the Snowflake. The SBGJ201’s blue GMT hand, subtly textured dial and 44GS-inspired case caught his attention. After seeing both watches in person again, he decided the SBGJ201 was the one he wanted. That is Broer’s personal comparison, not a standardized test of the models.
What tipped the decision
- Material and feel: He preferred the weight and feel of the SBGJ201’s stainless steel to the Snowflake’s titanium.
- Dial and display: He liked the SBGJ201’s texture and blue GMT hand, and preferred its dial without a power-reserve indicator.
- Case: The SBGJ201’s 44GS-inspired shape appealed to him.
- Complication: The SBGJ201 offered a GMT function, while the Snowflake’s appeal for him centered in part on Spring Drive.
- Thickness: He recognized that the SBGJ201 was thicker, which he thought was likely related to its GMT function.
What the Grand Seiko SBGJ201 is
Grand Seiko’s US boutique lists the SBGJ201 as a Hi-Beat 36000 GMT with a stainless-steel case and bracelet. The brand describes its design as a modern interpretation of the 44GS, first launched in 1967. The dial’s ridged pattern is inspired by Mt. Iwate, visible from Studio Shizukuishi, where Grand Seiko mechanical watches are made. Broer initially thought the texture looked like rice paper and said it was most apparent up close.

Is the SBGJ201 a true GMT?
It is a GMT watch with an independent hour hand, according to Grand Seiko’s US specifications. That means the local hour can be adjusted independently while the GMT function tracks another time zone. The 9S86 is an automatic Hi-Beat movement operating at 36,000 beats per hour; the listing states a 55-hour power reserve and static accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day.
How it wore for Broer
After roughly six months with the watch, Broer wrote that he still felt good about his choice and wore it frequently. He praised the finishing of the hands, markers, case and bracelet. His own watch, in his observations, ran at -2 seconds per day dial-up and +1 second per day crown-down. Those are readings he reported for his individual watch, not an independent test or a promise of performance from every SBGJ201.
Bracelet or strap?
Broer tried a custom blue 19 mm alligator strap with a Grand Seiko buckle. He liked that it showed off the lugs, but found the combination made the 14 mm watch feel thicker and dressier. He returned to the steel bracelet for greater versatility, although its polished links were not entirely to his taste. The official listing confirms the watch’s 19 mm lug width, but any replacement strap should still be checked for lug-width fit and suitable spring bars.
