The watch uses optical sensor data and a personal calibration reference to estimate systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and pulse. It does not inflate a cuff or directly measure arterial pressure.
Samsung positions the feature as wellness monitoring, not a diagnostic tool. It can help you notice possible trends, but it should not replace a validated upper-arm monitor, diagnose hypertension, or guide medication changes.
Which Samsung watches can estimate blood pressure?
Samsung’s U.S. Health Monitor information lists the Galaxy Watch4 and later released Galaxy Watch models as the compatible watch family. Galaxy Fit devices are excluded. Current models listed by Samsung include the Galaxy Watch7, Galaxy Watch8, Galaxy Watch8 Classic, and Galaxy Watch Ultra.
Compatibility is not automatic for every unit. The watch must run Wear OS 4.0 or later, and the paired phone must run Android 12 or later. Samsung also requires a compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone; an iPhone is not sufficient for Samsung Health Monitor. Availability can vary according to the country, region, device origin, software, app version, and rollout status. Check Samsung’s current compatibility list before buying.

In the United States, Samsung began a phased rollout on March 31, 2026. Older articles saying the feature was unavailable in the U.S. may therefore be out of date. Samsung has also announced passive blood-pressure trend monitoring for later in 2026; that should not be confused with the currently available user-initiated spot measurement unless your device and region explicitly support it.
How does Samsung estimate blood pressure?
The watch uses optical photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors—the same general class of sensors used to track pulse. Light is emitted into the skin, and the sensor detects changes associated with blood volume and the pulse wave.
During calibration, the watch compares its optical signal with readings from an upper-arm cuff. Samsung’s algorithm then builds a user-specific relationship between the optical pulse-wave data and the cuff measurements. After calibration, the watch uses subsequent optical readings to estimate:
- Systolic blood pressure
- Diastolic blood pressure
- Pulse
This is why descriptions such as “the watch directly measures arterial pressure” or “the watch uses a tiny cuff” are misleading. The watch performs an algorithmic estimate from optical signals; it does not use the conventional inflatable-cuff method.
Samsung says sensor cleanliness and the optical properties of the measurement area can affect signal quality. Fit, movement, watch position, body posture, temperature, and changes in vascular condition can also influence a cuffless estimate.

How to calibrate a Galaxy Watch for blood pressure
You need a compatible Galaxy Watch, a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, the Samsung Health Monitor app, and a third-party upper-arm blood-pressure cuff sold separately. Samsung’s current setup process is:
- Pair the watch with the compatible Galaxy phone.
- Install or update Samsung Health Monitor on both devices.
- Open Samsung Health Monitor on the phone.
- Tap Blood pressure, then Calibrate the watch.
- Place the upper-arm cuff on one arm and wear the watch on the opposite wrist.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and complete three cuff measurements within 30 minutes.
- Enter or confirm the cuff readings in the app.
- Use the watch on the same wrist for future measurements.
Samsung requires recalibration every 28 days. The watch therefore does not eliminate the need for a cuff; it only avoids using one for every individual watch reading.
Prepare consistently for calibration
For more comparable readings, Samsung recommends avoiding smoking or nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, exercise, and bathing for at least 30 minutes beforehand. Rest for at least five minutes, support your back, keep both feet flat and your legs uncrossed, rest your forearm on a table, and remain still and silent during the measurements.
The cuff itself is part of the calibration chain. An incorrect cuff size, poor arm position, talking, movement, or an inaccurate cuff can transfer error into the watch’s estimates.
How to take a blood-pressure reading afterward
- Open Samsung Health Monitor on the watch.
- Tap Blood pressure.
- Tap Measure.
- Read the prompt and tap OK.
- Remain still and quiet until the measurement finishes.
- Review the systolic, diastolic, and pulse results on the watch or paired phone.
The cuff is not required for each reading after calibration, but it is required again when the 28-day recalibration is due.

What ranges can the app display?
Samsung lists the following operating ranges:
| Type | Systolic | Diastolic |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement range | 70–180 mmHg | 40–120 mmHg |
| Calibration range | 80–170 mmHg | 50–110 mmHg |
These are operating ranges, not guarantees of clinical accuracy. A watch can display a number within a stated range and still be inaccurate for a particular person or situation.
How accurate is Samsung’s blood-pressure feature?
There is no responsible single percentage that describes how accurate every Samsung watch reading will be. Performance depends on the person, calibration quality, watch fit, posture, signal quality, time since calibration, and the circumstances of the reading.

The technology has some encouraging evidence. A 2026 peer-reviewed study using Galaxy Watch 6 PPG data reported promising results for detecting meaningful changes in mean arterial pressure compared with invasive central measurements. However, the authors described the results as preliminary and said the protocol did not meet relevant validation requirements. Read the study.
Earlier research on the Galaxy Watch Active2 found systematic bias toward the calibration value: lower pressures tended to be overestimated while higher pressures tended to be underestimated. That study concluded the device was not ready for clinical use. Broader research on cuffless smartwatch blood-pressure systems also suggests performance can degrade in older, hypertensive, and more medically diverse populations. (Active2 study; broader validation study.)
The practical conclusion is that the watch may be useful for wellness tracking and identifying a possible change worth confirming. A single smartwatch result should not be treated as definitive blood-pressure measurement.

Tracking is not diagnosing
A Galaxy Watch can record estimated values, store them in Samsung Health Monitor, and help you observe patterns over time. It may provide useful information to discuss with a clinician.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt should not be used to:
- Diagnose or rule out hypertension
- Confirm that your blood pressure is normal
- Replace ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring
- Determine whether medication is working
- Change or stop medication
- Detect or rule out a heart attack
Do not confuse blood-pressure estimation with ECG recording, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, sleep-apnea screening, or ordinary heart-rate tracking. These are separate features with different purposes and claims. Samsung describes the blood-pressure feature as wellness monitoring and advises consulting a healthcare professional before interpreting or acting on its results.
What to do when the watch reading looks unusual
- Sit quietly and repeat the measurement with a validated, FDA-authorized upper-arm cuff.
- Use consistent posture and take more than one cuff reading if appropriate.
- Record confirmed cuff readings if you are monitoring a condition.
- Contact your clinician about repeated abnormal readings.
- Do not change medication based solely on the watch.
If you have chest pain, trouble breathing, one-sided weakness, confusion, fainting, or other emergency symptoms, seek urgent medical help regardless of what the watch reports. The FDA warns that inaccurate wearable blood-pressure readings can delay treatment or lead to inappropriate interventions. See the FDA safety communication.

The Blood pressure option is missing
Check that the watch is a supported Galaxy Watch4-or-newer model, runs Wear OS 4.0 or later, and is paired with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone running Android 12 or later. Update Samsung Health Monitor and check regional availability. Imported devices, travel, resets, account settings, and software differences can affect access.
Calibration fails or readings will not complete
Clean the watch sensors, tighten the strap without making it uncomfortable, keep the watch in the required position, and remove movement from the process. Repeat calibration with a correctly sized upper-arm cuff and the recommended five-minute rest period. Sweat, lotion, hair, tattoos, skin characteristics, poor contact, or movement can reduce optical signal quality; Samsung documents signal-quality limitations, but those factors do not make the feature suitable for clinical decisions.

The watch and cuff disagree
Do not automatically assume either device is correct. Check cuff size, cuff placement, posture, rest time, watch fit, and calibration date. Compare several readings under similar conditions. If the difference persists, use the validated upper-arm cuff for health decisions and ask a clinician about the discrepancy.
Readings seem unusually stable
A cuffless algorithm can be influenced by its calibration reference. Earlier Galaxy Watch research found a tendency toward the calibration value, so a watch that appears reassuringly stable should not override repeated cuff readings or clinical advice.
The result is outside the calibration range
The app’s calibration range is narrower than its measurement range. Treat an out-of-range or implausible result as a reason to repeat the reading with an upper-arm cuff, not as proof that the watch has identified a medical emergency or a definitive diagnosis.
Should you buy a Samsung watch for blood-pressure tracking?
If you already own a compatible Galaxy Watch and Galaxy phone, the most rational additional purchase is usually a validated upper-arm cuff—not a new watch solely for blood-pressure monitoring.

A Samsung watch makes more sense when you also want exercise, sleep, heart-rate, ECG, and Samsung Health features, and you are comfortable treating blood-pressure estimates as a convenience and trend-awareness layer. A premium model does not inherently make its blood-pressure estimate more clinically reliable.
Choose a dedicated upper-arm cuff when you have diagnosed hypertension, need to assess medication response, are pregnant, or have been instructed by a clinician to keep carefully documented readings. For high-stakes decisions, follow clinician-directed monitoring or ambulatory monitoring instead. The FDA recommends selecting an FDA-authorized device when accurate blood-pressure measurement is medically important.
Bottom line
Samsung Galaxy Watches can estimate blood pressure after calibration with an upper-arm cuff, and the feature is available to U.S. users through a phased rollout that began March 31, 2026. It is convenient for wellness tracking and spotting possible trends, but calibration, signal quality, positioning, physiology, and time-related drift all limit confidence.
Keep the cuff. Use the watch as a supplementary tracker, confirm unusual results with the cuff, and leave diagnosis and treatment decisions to a healthcare professional.
