Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: only partly. Apple appears to have discontinued FineWoven iPhone cases by September 2024, but Apple’s U.S. store still listed FineWoven Apple Watch bands and a FineWoven MagSafe Wallet as of August 18, 2026. The April 2024 claim that Apple had ended all FineWoven production was a leak, not an official Apple announcement.
For Apple Watch buyers, the distinction matters: FineWoven bands remain available, but current listings prove sale or inventory—not that Apple is still manufacturing them.
What the original FineWoven rumor claimed
On April 21, 2024, 9to5Mac reported a claim from leaker Kosutami that Apple had stopped FineWoven production because of durability problems. The report did not cite an Apple announcement or manufacturing document.
That wording also blurred several different events:

- Product-line discontinuation: Apple no longer offering a successor or new models.
- Sell-through: existing inventory remaining available after production ends.
- Warranty replacements: replacement stock potentially continuing after retail sales stop.
Those are not interchangeable. The later evidence supports the end of FineWoven iPhone cases, but not a confirmed shutdown of every FineWoven product or production line.
Why Apple introduced FineWoven
Apple introduced FineWoven alongside the iPhone 15 generation in September 2023 as a lower-carbon replacement for leather accessories. Apple described it as a durable microtwill with a soft, suede-like feel and said it contained 68% post-consumer recycled content. The launch included iPhone MagSafe cases, MagSafe Wallets, Apple Watch Magnetic Link bands, and Modern Buckle bands. Apple’s announcement said the material had lower emissions than leather.
That environmental claim should not be expanded into a claim that FineWoven has better total lifecycle performance; the supplied evidence does not provide a comparative lifecycle study.
Why FineWoven attracted complaints
Complaints appeared soon after launch. Reported issues included scuffs, scratches, dirt and lint collecting in the surface, fraying or peeling, stains, and marks left by MagSafe accessories. Some owners also felt the material did not deliver the premium durability associated with the leather products it replaced.
AppleInsider’s review described indentations, snags, lint retention, and staining on its sample. Consumer Reports also tested a FineWoven case. These reviews provide useful product-testing context, but they do not establish that every FineWoven case failed or provide a formal defect rate.

- Made from a durable microtwill, the FineWoven material has a soft, suedelike feel. It was also designed with the earth in mind—made from 68% post-consumer recycled content and significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to leather.

- M/L - fits 165–205mm wrists
There is no evidence in the supplied sources of a recall, safety issue, formal defect finding, or published return-rate data. It is therefore more accurate to describe FineWoven as having a widely reported durability problem than to call every product defective.
Did Apple acknowledge the wear?
In September 2023, 9to5Mac reported retail guidance telling employees that FineWoven can change appearance with use, develop compressed fibers, and show slight imprints from MagSafe accessories. The reported guidance also recommended cleaning the surface with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
That indicates Apple was responding to customer concerns. It is not, by itself, an admission that the material was defective or that complaints caused a later production decision.
What happened to FineWoven iPhone cases?
This is where the rumor was substantially validated. MacRumors reported on September 9, 2024 that Apple had removed FineWoven cases for older iPhones and introduced no FineWoven cases for the iPhone 16. Apple instead offered silicone and clear cases.
That supports the conclusion that the FineWoven iPhone case line was discontinued. It does not prove the precise date on which factory production stopped, how much inventory remained, or that customer complaints were officially identified as the cause.

- The Venezia leather for this band is handcrafted in Arzignano, Italy. With an artisan heritage spanning five generations, the tannery has a history of partnership with some of the most prestigious names in fashion.
- A delicate milling and tumbling process enhances the beautiful pebbled texture.
- And magnets concealed within the soft, quilted leather allow you to simply wrap it around your wrist for a precise fit and a trim look.
- Medium/Large band fits 165–205mm wrists and are compatible with 42mm, 44mm and 45mm Apple Watch Models
Apple did not appear to restore leather cases in this transition. The reported iPhone 16 alternatives were silicone and clear cases, not a return to the previous leather range.
What happened to FineWoven Apple Watch bands?
The watch-band portion of the original rumor is not supported by Apple’s current U.S. store. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s FineWoven Apple Watch band page listed:
| Band | Listed U.S. price |
|---|---|
| FineWoven Magnetic Link | $99 |
| FineWoven Modern Buckle | $149 |
The listed colors included Caramel, Sage Gray, Navy, and Midnight Purple, depending on the design. Apple’s store still treated FineWoven as a current Apple Watch band category.
However, a store listing proves that Apple is offering the band or has inventory available. It does not prove that factories are currently producing it. The defensible conclusion is that Apple did not completely remove FineWoven watch bands from sale—not that ongoing manufacturing has been confirmed.
Which FineWoven accessories remain?
Apple’s reviewed FineWoven iPhone accessories page showed a FineWoven Wallet with MagSafe but no FineWoven iPhone case listings. The catalog also exposed a TechWoven material filter.

TechWoven should not automatically be described as Apple’s FineWoven replacement. The supplied source does not establish that every TechWoven listing is Apple-manufactured or explain the exact relationship between the materials. Verify each product separately.
What the evidence does—and does not—prove
- Officially documented: Apple launched FineWoven accessories in 2023 and described their recycled content and material characteristics.
- Reported but unconfirmed: a complete FineWoven production halt in April 2024, based on a leaker’s claim.
- Strongly supported by the later lineup: FineWoven iPhone cases were discontinued by the iPhone 16 launch.
- Shown by current Apple retail availability: FineWoven Apple Watch bands and a FineWoven MagSafe Wallet remained listed as of August 18, 2026.
- Not established: current factory output, production volumes, complaint totals, or the internal reason for discontinuing the iPhone cases.
No reviewed source contains an official Apple statement confirming that all FineWoven production ended. Avoid claims that Apple “admitted defeat,” that complaints definitely caused the discontinuation, or that Apple destroyed every FineWoven production line.

FineWoven can still make sense for a buyer who wants a soft, dressier alternative to Apple’s sport bands and accepts visible aging. The Magnetic Link and Modern Buckle designs offer Apple’s native fit, and they remain available directly from Apple in the U.S. store.
The trade-off is durability and maintenance. FineWoven may show scuffs, dirt, compression, discoloration, or marks more readily than silicone or metal. At $99 for Magnetic Link and $149 for Modern Buckle, the price is difficult to justify if your priority is ruggedness or easy cleaning.
FineWoven is a poor fit for frequent swimmers, heavy gym use, outdoor work, rough environments, or anyone who wants a band that can be wiped clean quickly. Apple’s band-material guidance identifies FineWoven Magnetic Link and Modern Buckle bands as FineWoven products and notes that not all Apple Watch band materials are water resistant.

Practical care
The cleaning method reported from Apple’s retail guidance is simple:
- Dampen a lint-free cloth with clean water.
- Wring it out until it is only slightly damp.
- Gently rub the FineWoven surface for about one minute.
Do not soak the band or use bleach, solvents, abrasive brushes, machine washing, high heat, or aggressive stain treatments. Even careful cleaning cannot restore fibers that have already frayed, compressed, or permanently stained.
What to do if your FineWoven accessory is damaged
Contact Apple or an authorized service provider and be prepared for an inspection. The outcome may depend on the purchase date, region, warranty terms, whether the issue is judged to be a manufacturing defect or ordinary cosmetic wear, and whether replacement inventory exists.
A discontinued iPhone case may be replaceable only while suitable stock remains. A replacement may be the same product if inventory exists, but Apple may not have the original color or model. Do not assume that a replacement will be free.
Apple’s general service policy says Apple and authorized providers may provide service and parts for at least five years after Apple last distributed a product for sale, subject to parts availability. That policy concerns Apple products and service parts; it is not a guarantee that every accessory will have replacement stock for five years.
Alternatives for Apple Watch owners
| Alternative | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sport Band | Exercise, water exposure, and easy cleaning | Less formal than FineWoven |
| Sport Loop | Soft, breathable everyday wear | Still a textile surface and can retain moisture |
| Milanese Loop | A dressier non-textile option | Metal comfort and possible snagging are personal considerations |
For the closest formal appearance, FineWoven remains the direct option, but its uncertain long-term stock and durability history should be part of the decision. For predictable availability and easier care, Sport Band is the safer practical choice. For a premium dress alternative without a textile surface, Milanese Loop is worth considering.
Bottom line
The April 2024 FineWoven shutdown rumor was partly true but too broad. Apple appears to have abandoned FineWoven iPhone cases by the iPhone 16 launch, while Apple’s U.S. store still listed FineWoven Apple Watch bands at $99 and $149, along with a FineWoven MagSafe Wallet, as of August 18, 2026.
So the accurate headline is not “Apple ended FineWoven.” It is: FineWoven iPhone cases are effectively discontinued, but FineWoven Apple Watch bands were still being offered by Apple. Availability does not reveal current manufacturing status, and Apple has not publicly confirmed a complete production shutdown in the reviewed sources.
