Some older Samsung watches can connect to an iPhone, but current Galaxy Watch models cannot. Samsung’s 2018 Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active2, Galaxy Watch3 and selected older Gear devices are listed as iPhone-compatible. The Galaxy Watch4 and every newer Wear OS Galaxy Watch—including the Watch5, Watch6, Watch FE, Watch7, Galaxy Watch Ultra and, on Samsung’s newer regional listing, Watch8 and Watch8 Classic—cannot be set up with iOS.
If you use an iPhone and are buying a watch today, choose an Apple Watch for the closest integration or a Garmin for fitness and battery life. An older Samsung watch can make sense if you already own one or find it exceptionally cheap, but it will not deliver an Apple Watch-style experience.

Which Galaxy Watches do not work with an iPhone?
Do not buy a Galaxy Watch4 or newer model expecting to pair it with an iPhone. That includes:
- Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic
- Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro
- Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic
- Galaxy Watch FE
- Galaxy Watch7
- Galaxy Watch Ultra
- Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic
This is an operating-system incompatibility, not merely a missing convenience feature. A discounted Watch4, an LTE version or a watch advertised as “Bluetooth compatible” is still not an iPhone-compatible purchase.
Why newer Samsung watches fail with iPhone
Earlier Galaxy Watches used Samsung’s Tizen-based wearable platform and could be managed through an iPhone version of Samsung’s watch app. Starting with the Galaxy Watch4, Samsung moved its main smartwatch line to Wear OS.
Recommended Free Tools
Samsung says these Wear OS Galaxy Watches require Google Mobile Services or Google Play services, which are not supported on iOS. As a result, iOS cannot provide the setup and management environment that these watches require. Samsung’s documentation specifically says Wear OS Galaxy Watches are not compatible with iOS devices; its Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 setup guidance also says they cannot be set up with an iOS device or as standalone watches.
Installing Samsung Health, using ordinary Bluetooth pairing or finding a generic Bluetooth utility does not solve the problem. Bluetooth is only the radio connection. Full compatibility also requires the companion app, account services, firmware updates, watch-face and app management, notifications, health synchronization and operating-system services.

How to set up an older compatible Samsung watch with an iPhone
For a supported older model, Samsung’s documented setup route is:
- Install the appropriate Samsung Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Fit app from the iPhone App Store.
- Open the app.
- Tap START THE JOURNEY.
- Select the exact watch model.
- Follow the pairing instructions and approve the requested permissions.
- Complete Samsung account and notification permissions if prompted.
These steps apply only to models Samsung supports. They are not a workaround for a Galaxy Watch4 or later. Before buying an old watch, confirm that the required app is available for your iPhone and that Samsung still supports the model in your region.

Basic watch functions
An older compatible watch may still provide timekeeping, watch faces, alarms, timers, activity tracking, workouts, a Bluetooth connection and some notification handling. The precise feature set depends on the model, app version, iPhone, iOS release and region.
That is enough for someone who wants a basic wearable and already has the watch. It is not the same as buying a current smartwatch with full phone integration.
Phone integration
Samsung warns that some features and services may be unavailable when an earlier Galaxy Watch is connected to an iPhone. In practical terms, investigate the following rather than assuming parity with a Galaxy phone:

- WHY GALAXY WATCH8: Advanced health and sleep tracking features.* A lighter, more snug design for all day comfort.* Improved user interface.* Personal AI assistant for hands free help.⁴* 2-Year Warranty.

- How much of the available app and watch-face ecosystem remains accessible.
- Whether notifications are merely displayed or can be acted on fully.
- How reliably activity and health data synchronizes with Samsung Health or Apple Health.
- Which Samsung-specific services require a Galaxy phone.
- Whether current firmware and app updates remain available.
Older hardware also means a greater risk of battery wear, aging software and limited remaining support. Those are practical used-device concerns, not guarantees that every compatible model will fail in the same way.
Health features need extra caution
A sensor being physically present does not guarantee that its measurements, analysis or regulated health feature will work through an iPhone. ECG, blood-pressure monitoring, sleep analysis and other advanced functions may depend on the watch model, phone model, operating system, Samsung account, region, regulatory availability and whether the phone is a Samsung Galaxy device.
Check Samsung’s current documentation for the exact model and country before relying on any health feature. Do not assume that a feature demonstrated on a Galaxy phone will behave identically on iOS.
Does LTE make a Samsung watch compatible with iPhone?
No. LTE can reduce dependence on a phone after setup, but it does not turn an iPhone into a compatible setup device.
Cellular activation introduces separate requirements, including carrier support, account provisioning, regional compatibility and the correct companion software. A Galaxy Watch4-or-newer LTE model still cannot be set up with iOS merely because it has cellular connectivity.

Can you set up a newer Galaxy Watch with Android first?
Setting up a Galaxy Watch4 or later with an Android phone does not convert it into an iPhone-compatible watch. The watch remains dependent on the supported Android ecosystem, the Galaxy Wearable app and Google Play services. Once you switch back to an iPhone, you should not expect supported pairing or management.
Unofficial hacks, sideloading and partial Bluetooth workarounds are not reliable substitutes for official compatibility.
What iPhone and iOS version do older models require?
Samsung’s listed historical minimums include:
- iPhone 5 or later with iOS 9 or later: the 2018 Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active2 and several older Gear devices.
- iPhone 7 or later with iOS 10 or later: Galaxy Fit, according to Samsung’s compatibility material.
These are minimum compatibility figures, not a recommendation to use an obsolete iPhone. Samsung also notes that connections involving the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus may be unstable in certain configurations. Current iOS versions, app requirements and regional support can change, so check the live Samsung listing before purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Samsung Health enough?
No. Samsung Health and the watch-management app serve different purposes.
- Galaxy Wearable or the Galaxy Watch app: pairing, configuration and watch management for supported models.
- Samsung Health: health and activity data where the watch and platform are supported.
- Samsung Health Monitor: separate health functionality with additional phone, device, region and regulatory restrictions.
Samsung Health is available in Apple’s App Store, but that does not mean every Galaxy Watch can pair with iOS. App availability is not proof of watch compatibility.

Should an iPhone user buy an older Samsung watch?
Buy one only when most of the following are true:
- You already own a confirmed compatible model, or the price is exceptionally low.
- You mainly want timekeeping, basic workouts and limited notifications.
- You accept an older Tizen-based platform and less integration than an Apple Watch.
- You have checked the exact model, app availability, iPhone requirement and regional support.
- The battery, return policy and condition justify the used-device risk.
Do not buy one when you want current Samsung hardware, long-term software support, advanced health features, dependable messaging and app integration, or a new battery. Do not pay close to the cost of a current Apple Watch or compatible Garmin for aging hardware.
Used Samsung watch buying checklist
- Identify the exact model. “Galaxy Watch” may mean the 2018 Tizen model; “Galaxy Watch4” is a different, incompatible generation.
- Check the platform. Older Tizen models may be supported; Galaxy Watch4 and newer models use Wear OS and do not work with iPhone.
- Confirm app support. Verify that the required Samsung app is available for your iPhone and region.
- Inspect battery condition. Old batteries may provide substantially less runtime than when new.
- Confirm the watch is reset. Ask the seller to remove the previous account and activation lock, if applicable.
- Verify cellular details. For LTE models, check carrier compatibility and activation requirements separately.
- Use a return-protected seller. Marketplace descriptions often confuse Bluetooth connectivity with complete compatibility.
Better alternatives for iPhone users
Apple Watch: best for integration
Choose an Apple Watch if you care most about notifications, calls, messages, Apple Health, Apple Pay, safety features, native watchOS apps and simple setup. Apple’s compatibility page lists the iPhone and iOS requirements for each current generation. As of the cited support information, Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later; check Apple’s live requirements before buying.
The SE line is the value-oriented choice, Series 11 is the fuller general-purpose option, and Ultra 3 is aimed at outdoor users and athletes who want a rugged design and greater cellular independence. Verify current prices and country-specific availability on Apple’s Watch page and the Ultra page.

Choose Garmin when running, cycling, hiking, training metrics or longer battery life matter more than deep iPhone integration. Garmin Connect officially supports compatible Apple devices, making Garmin a credible cross-platform alternative. The trade-off is that it does not reproduce Apple’s Messages, Apple Health, Apple Pay and watchOS experience. Select a Garmin model according to your activity rather than treating the brand as one uniform product. See Garmin’s compatibility requirements.
Android phone plus Galaxy Watch
If current Samsung watch hardware is the priority, the practical route is a compatible Android phone that supports Google Mobile Services. That is an ecosystem switch, not a watch-only workaround, and should be judged against the cost and inconvenience of replacing your phone. Samsung’s Wear OS requirements explain the phone dependencies.
Final verdict
If you already own an older compatible Galaxy Watch, it may remain usable with an iPhone for basic smartwatch functions. If you are buying a Samsung watch for an iPhone, avoid the Galaxy Watch4 and every newer model: they cannot be set up with iOS. For a dependable purchase, choose an Apple Watch for maximum iPhone integration or a Garmin for fitness and battery life.
