No—an Apple Watch does not measure blood glucose on its own. It can display readings from a separate continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch can send readings and alerts from its sensor straight to a compatible Apple Watch after setup in the iPhone app.
How glucose readings get to an Apple Watch
A CGM uses an external sensor to measure glucose in interstitial fluid. With Dexcom G7, the sensor is worn on the body; the Apple Watch is a display, not the sensor. The FDA device review describes the G7 as prescription-only and identifies a mobile app or receiver as display options. Apple Watch health sensors do not replace a glucose monitor. In this setup, the watch shows data measured by the external CGM rather than independently testing or estimating glucose.
Two ways to see CGM readings on a watch

Direct to Watch does not make the whole system phone-free: you need the iPhone to pair a new sensor and start or configure a session. Compatibility and setup requirements
Check the devices and software
Dexcom lists these requirements for Direct to Watch: Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 10 or later, an iPhone with iOS 17 or later, and a compatible G7 app. Compatibility can change as software is updated, so check Dexcom’s current requirements before buying or setting up a device.
Enable Direct to Watch
- Set up the Dexcom G7 app on the compatible iPhone.
- In the app, open Connections > Direct to Watch and follow the setup prompts.
- Pair each new G7 sensor and enable/configure the feature through the iOS app.
- Confirm that the watch is receiving current readings and alerts. If the app indicates it has switched to phone mirroring, keep the iPhone nearby.

Be cautious of watches claiming to measure glucose by themselves
The FDA says it has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate blood glucose on its own. That warning is different from using a watch app to display readings from an FDA-authorized device such as a CGM. The agency warns that inaccurate readings could lead to medication errors, including an incorrect insulin dose or use of medicines that can rapidly lower glucose. It advises consumers not to buy or use watches or rings that claim to measure glucose and to consult a healthcare provider about an appropriate authorized device when accurate measurements matter medically. Software corrections can affect whether readings or alerts arrive as expected. In a July 24, 2025 notice, the FDA described a correction for older Dexcom G7 app versions: a transmitter hardware or firmware failure could end a sensor session without a “Sensor Failed” alert, leaving a user unaware that readings and alerts had stopped. A separate FDA Class 2 recall record describes an April 14, 2026 correction for G7 iOS/watchOS versions 2.9.0 through 2.11.2. A software defect could replay older estimated glucose values and delay alerts.
