Can You Use a Chronograph Watch in Water? Pushers, Ratings, and Precautions

For ordinary chronographs, avoid pressing the pushers underwater or while wet. Here is how to read water-resistance ratings, what seals and damage do, and what manufacturers advise before and after water exposure.

Usually not with the pushers. For an ordinary chronograph, the safe general rule is to avoid pressing the pushers underwater or while the watch is wet. Whether the watch can be worn in water at all depends on the exact model, its stated water-resistance rating, the permitted activity in its manual, and the condition of its seals. A rating printed on the dial or caseback is not a blanket permission to swim, dive, or sit in a shower with the chronograph running.

Why the pushers are a separate question

A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch function, and its pushers are the controls that start, stop, and reset that function. Each pusher passes through the case, so it is a sealing point in its own right, alongside the crown and crystal. That is why manufacturers treat pusher operation as a separate instruction from the case’s water resistance. A watch can carry a respectable rating and still be documented as unsuitable for operating its pushers in water.

What each manufacturer says about pushers

The brands reviewed for this article agree on the core precaution, but they differ on exceptions, service intervals, and cleaning. The table below lists the wording as each manufacturer states it. Where a brand gives no guidance on a point, the cell says so.

Brand Chronograph pushers underwater or while wet Recommended check or service interval Saltwater, condensation, or care guidance
Swatch “Crown and pushers must never be manipulated under water!” Not stated by Swatch Not stated by Swatch
TAG Heuer “Do not operate the pushers underwater.” Authorized-center check every two years for watches regularly exposed to water Not stated by TAG Heuer
Breitling “Never activate the chronograph pushers underwater or when the watch is wet.” Exception only for watches with its dedicated patented magnetic pusher systems Not stated by Breitling Condensation under the crystal needs immediate attention from a retailer or authorized service center
Patek Philippe Gives the same precaution against operating pushers in water Not stated by Patek Philippe Clean-water rinse for bracelets after contact with saltwater or chlorinated pool water
Casio Not stated by Casio Gasket replacement roughly every two to three years for its general water-resistant watches Rinse salt and dirt off with plain water
IWC Schaffhausen Not stated by IWC Schaffhausen Testing at least annually, as IWC recommends for its watches Not stated by IWC Schaffhausen

The Breitling exception is narrow. It applies to the brand’s dedicated patented magnetic pusher systems and cannot be extended to other chronographs, even from the same maker. If you are quoting the rule, keep the exception attached to it.

How to read a water-resistance rating

Meters and bars are test figures, not depth allowances

Casio is direct about what a meter figure means: “Watches with metre indications for water resistance cannot be used immediately in this water depth, however, as water resistance metre indications are merely a pictorial representation of the test pressure.” A “30 m” or “100 m” marking therefore tells you the pressure the watch was tested to, not that you can take it to that depth or use it in a given activity.

Swatch uses bar figures instead. It states model-dependent pressure indications of 2, 3, 10, or 20 bar, which it associates with hydrostatic equivalents of 20 m, 30 m, 100 m, or 200 m. These are model-specific indications. They are not a universal permission for any water activity.

What a rating does not tell you

  • It does not confirm that you can press the chronograph pushers in water. Pusher guidance is set separately, and some makers prohibit it outright.
  • It does not establish a minimum rating for swimming or diving across brands. No single figure is accepted as a universal allowance.
  • It describes the watch when new and in good condition. It is not a guarantee for an older or damaged watch.

Seals wear out, and damage removes resistance

Water resistance can decline as gaskets age, and impacts to the crown, pushers, or crystal can compromise it. Casio names all three as sources of reduced resistance. An older chronograph that was once rated for swimming may no longer be safe for that use, even though the dial still shows the same figure. This is why the service interval matters more for a watch that is regularly wet than for one worn on dry land.

Before you go in the water

  1. Find the exact model reference and open its official manual. Confirm the rating and the permitted activities listed for that model.
  2. Check whether the crown or pushers are screw-locked. If they are, screw them down fully as the manual directs before exposure.
  3. Do not pull the crown out, and do not press any chronograph pusher, while the watch is underwater or wet.
  4. Stop the chronograph and leave its hands and pushers untouched before the watch goes in the water. Starting or resetting it on the way in is what the precaution is meant to prevent.
  5. If the watch is more than a few years old or has been dropped, have the seals checked before relying on its rating.

After exposure: cleaning and checks

  • After saltwater contact, follow the model manual. Casio advises rinsing salt and dirt with plain water.
  • For a metal bracelet exposed to saltwater or chlorinated pool water, Patek Philippe recommends a clean-water rinse.
  • Have a watch that is regularly exposed to water serviced on the schedule its manufacturer gives. TAG Heuer recommends an authorized-center check every two years for regular exposure, and Casio suggests gasket replacement roughly every two to three years for its general water-resistant models. These are brand-specific intervals, not a universal standard, and the publication dates of these brand pages are not stated.

Strap material affects the watch, not the case rating

Breitling warns that water can damage leather and textile straps, and it suggests a metal bracelet or rubber strap for water-based activities. Changing the strap will protect the strap, but it does not make the case more water-resistant. The case rating is unchanged by whatever you attach to it.

When to stop and get the watch checked

  • Condensation under the crystal. Take the watch to a retailer or authorized service center right away, as Breitling advises. Do not press the pushers to test it.
  • A chronograph that feels stiff, gritty, or loose after exposure. Stop using the pushers in water and have the watch inspected before the next exposure.
  • Damage to the crown, pushers, or crystal. Treat the rating as unverified until a service center has checked the seals.
