Usually, but not with every watch. A Marine Nationale (MN) strap is a one-piece pass-through strap, so it normally fits a watch with conventional open lugs, removable spring bars, a strap width that matches the lug width, and enough space for the webbing between the bars and case. Fixed bars, integrated connectors, unusual lug shapes, tight clearances, and some smartwatch sensor layouts require a different strap or a model-specific solution. Measure the lug gap and inspect the attachment before buying; case diameter alone cannot tell you whether an MN strap will fit.
What is a Marine Nationale strap?
A Marine Nationale strap is a one-piece watch strap, generally made from woven nylon or elastic webbing. Instead of attaching as two separate pieces to the lugs, the long strap passes under the watch case and around both spring bars. The watch therefore sits on top of the strap while the free length wraps around the wrist, through a buckle and one or more keepers.

The webbing has to pass through the space occupied by a conventional two-piece strap, and the spring bars carry the load generated by the entire watch and strap assembly. A strap that looks the right size can still fail to fit if the bars are fixed, the doubled webbing is too thick, or the case leaves almost no clearance.
Will an MN strap fit my watch?
It will fit when four conditions are met: the watch has compatible attachment points, the strap width matches the inside lug width, the case provides enough clearance for the strap, and the spring bars are suitable and correctly seated. Check these in that order.

Esprit Nato’s FAQ states that “the strap width must match the lug width of your watch.” That is an inside-to-inside measurement in millimetres, not the diameter of the case and not the width of the old buckle. Prometheus Design Werx describes one of its models as fitting watches with 20 mm lugs and removable spring bars, plus some watches with fixed bars; the qualification matters because fixed-bar geometry is not standardized.
How do I measure the correct MN strap width?
Measure the distance between the inside faces of the two lugs at the spring-bar position. Record the result in millimetres and buy that width. A watch specified as 20 mm takes a 20 mm strap; a 22 mm watch takes a 22 mm strap. Do not round a 19 mm or 21 mm gap to a nearby size unless the strap maker explicitly provides a compatible option.

- Use a ruler with millimetre markings or digital calipers to measure the clear gap from one inner lug wall to the other.
- Measure at the bar, not across the outside of the lugs.
- Confirm the result against the exact watch reference or the manufacturer’s specification.
- Keep the measurement separate from strap length: width controls lug fit, while length controls wrist and over-suit adjustment.
Published product examples show why the measurement matters. Those are product-specific figures, not universal MN standards, so check the listing for the exact width and construction you intend to buy.
What clearance does a one-piece strap need?
The strap sits between the spring bars and the caseback. There must be enough vertical and lateral room for the webbing to slide under the case without being pinched, folded sharply, or forced against the caseback. A thin strap may pass where a thick, heavily reinforced or doubled-end strap will not.
Inspect the watch from the side with the spring bars installed. Look for a continuous path under the case from one lug opening to the other. Pay particular attention to watches with a recessed caseback, hooded lugs, sharply curved lug tips, or very short bars. The clearance must accommodate the strap’s normal thickness and any section that is doubled near the buckle or keeper.
Thickness is not interchangeable between models. The 1.2 mm figure published by SELECT-HEURE applies to that particular product. Elastic MN straps can also become thicker where the webbing folds, is stitched, or passes through a keeper. If the strap catches while you slide it under the case, stop and inspect the geometry rather than pulling harder.

Does a Marine Nationale strap work with fixed lugs?
Fixed bars are the main exception to the usual MN installation. A conventional closed-end two-piece strap cannot be removed over a permanently attached bar, but an open-ended or elastic MN-style strap can sometimes pass around the bar. Compatibility depends on the strap’s end construction and the gap between the bar and case.
Removable spring bars
With removable bars, take both bars out, slide the strap under the case, and reinstall the bars through the lug holes. This is the straightforward configuration described in installation guidance from Esprit Nato and Luminox. The strap must still be the correct width and thin enough to clear the case.
Fixed bars
For fixed bars, choose a strap explicitly described as open-ended, fixed-bar compatible or designed to wrap around fixed bars. Elastic webbing may stretch over the bar, but the folded or doubled section can be too thick for a narrow opening. Test the fit gently with the watch off your wrist. Never lever a thick strap through a gap that could cut the webbing or bend the bar.
Integrated and proprietary connectors
Some watches use a molded end link, screw-in connector or brand-specific rail instead of a standard spring bar. A universal pass-through strap cannot replace that hardware. Use the connector made for the watch or select a strap system that states compatibility with the exact case.

One-piece straps put more tension on spring bars because the strap loops under the case and the watch’s weight is retained by both bars. Esprit Nato specifically warns that one-piece straps put more tension on spring bars. Use bars in good condition, with the correct shoulder and diameter for the lugs, and replace any bar that is bent, rusty, loose or missing an end.
After installation, look at both bar tips from the outside of the lugs. Each tip should be fully inside its hole or slot, with no visible gap. Push the watch head lightly from side to side while holding the strap; a bar that shifts, clicks out or fails to spring back is not ready for wear. A spring-bar tool can help with removable bars, but forcing the tool against polished lug edges can scratch the case.

Do not treat an MN strap as a substitute for damaged hardware. If a lug hole is enlarged, a bar is too short, or the bar does not match the lug design, have the watch repaired before fitting a new strap.
Can an MN strap cover smartwatch sensors?
Yes. A pass-through strap lies directly against the underside of the watch and may cover optical heart-rate, blood-oxygen or other sensor windows. Check the watch maker’s instructions before using a one-piece strap, especially if the sensor depends on direct skin contact and an unobstructed optical path.

A sensor reading that becomes intermittent after changing straps is a reason to stop using that arrangement, not to tighten the strap until it presses harder.
How do I choose strap length?
Length is independent of lug width. Once the width and attachment style are confirmed, measure the wrist in the way you will wear the watch and account for the watch’s case length. A short strap may not leave enough tail for the keeper; an excessively long strap can create bulky folds.
- Daily wrist wear: choose a length that leaves a manageable tail after the buckle is closed.
- Over a wetsuit or uniform sleeve: select the maker’s longer or extended option and verify the stated adjustment range.
- Elastic construction: allow room for stretch so the watch is secure without excessive pressure.
- Two keepers or a fixed keeper: confirm that the tail can pass through the intended keeper layout.
Manufacturers use different ways to state length, such as total strap length, wrist range or usable adjustment. Compare like with like and do not infer fit from width alone.
How do I install an MN strap on removable spring bars?
You need the measured lug width, a compatible strap, a spring-bar tool and a clean, stable surface. Work with the watch face protected and keep the bars under control so they do not scratch the case or fly away.

- Place the watch face down on a soft cloth.
- Use the spring-bar tool to release one bar, then the other. Keep the bars and note their orientation.
- Identify the long side of the MN strap and slide it under the caseback in the direction shown by the strap maker. Luminox’s installation sequence passes the long side under the case and back through the keeper.
- Align one spring bar with both lug holes and compress it into place. Repeat on the opposite side.
- Pull the strap slowly in both directions so the webbing lies flat and centered beneath the case.
- Inspect both bar ends, then apply light side-to-side pressure to confirm that neither bar releases.
- Wear the watch for a short period indoors first and recheck the bar seating before normal activity.
The final check is mechanical, not cosmetic: both bars must be fully seated, the strap must not be cut or pinched, and the watch must remain centered when the strap is tensioned.
How do I fit an MN strap around fixed bars?
Use only a strap whose construction explicitly allows fixed-bar installation. Feed the open end around the first bar, under the case and around the second bar according to the maker’s instructions. Keep the webbing flat and avoid twisting the elastic.
- Remove the watch from your wrist and inspect the gap around each fixed bar.
- Check the strap end for an open slot, split end or elastic section intended to pass the bar.
- Feed the end through without tools. If it snags, reverse direction and inspect for a thickness mismatch.
- Center the watch and check that no stitched or doubled section presses against the caseback.
- Apply gentle tension by hand. If the strap deforms, frays or pulls the bar against the lug, do not wear it.
A fixed-bar solution is successful only when the strap can be installed without force and remains clear of the case throughout its adjustment range.
What problems indicate an incompatibility?
- The strap will not enter the gap: the webbing or doubled end is too thick, or the case has insufficient clearance.
- The watch sits crooked: the strap is twisted, the width is wrong, or one bar is not fully seated.
- A bar keeps popping out: the bar may be damaged, too short, the wrong diameter or overloaded by a poor fit.
- The strap bunches under the case: the caseback or lug profile does not provide enough room for that thickness.
- A smartwatch loses readings: the strap may cover or displace the optical sensor.
- The fixed-bar end frays: the design is being forced through a gap it was not made to use.
Stop wearing the watch when a bar releases, the strap is visibly damaged or the sensor cannot maintain contact. Moving to a thinner strap, a different end construction or the manufacturer’s connector is safer than stretching an incompatible strap into place.

Compare the following specifications rather than relying on the “Marine Nationale” label alone:
- Lug width: the exact 19, 20, 21 or 22 mm option that matches your measurement.
- Attachment compatibility: removable spring bars, fixed bars, or a named proprietary system.
- Thickness and end construction: especially where the webbing doubles or is stitched.
- Elastic stretch: useful for changing wrist size or wearing over clothing, but it should not create excessive pressure.
- Spring-bar quality: correct length, diameter and shoulders for the watch.
- Buckle and keeper construction: inspect whether the tail can be secured without sharp edges or slipping.
- Sensor clearance: essential for watches with optical sensors on the caseback.

What is the practical decision rule?
Choose an MN strap when your watch has open or explicitly compatible fixed bars, the measured lug width is available, and the strap can pass under the case without pressure. Choose a different attachment when the watch uses an integrated connector, the clearance is too tight, the spring bars are questionable, or a smartwatch maker warns against covering its sensors.
A three-minute inspection prevents most failures: measure the lug gap, identify removable versus fixed bars, compare strap thickness with the under-case clearance, and verify spring-bar seating before wearing the watch outside. The correct strap is the one that satisfies all four checks, not merely one that matches the watch’s appearance.

Can I use a 20 mm MN strap on a 22 mm watch?
No. The strap should match the measured inside lug width. A narrower strap can shift sideways and load the spring bars unevenly, while a wider strap may not enter the lug opening.
Do I need to remove the spring bars to install an MN strap?

Is an elastic MN strap safe for diving or swimming?
