Sometimes, but not automatically. A chronograph describes a timing function, not a water-resistance rating, so whether a Seiko chronograph can go in water depends on the water-resistance marking on that specific watch’s case back. Read that marking, check which activities Seiko lists for it, and keep the crown and chronograph pushers untouched whenever the watch is wet.
Start with the case-back marking
Seiko directs owners to the marking on the back of the case to confirm both the water-resistance degree and the uses it covers. A collection name, the watch’s appearance, or the word “chronograph” does not establish the rating. Two chronographs that look nearly identical can carry different markings, so the reference number and the case back are the only reliable starting points.

What each bar rating allows
Seiko’s general water-resistance guidance groups its ratings by the activities it covers. The table below reflects that published chart. It is general guidance, not a guarantee for every reference, and the model’s own manual takes precedence.
| Case-back marking | Activities Seiko lists | Activities Seiko does not list |
|---|---|---|
| No water-resistance marking | None established | Do not assume water resistance; consult the manual or Seiko service |
| 3 bar / WATER RESISTANT | Accidental splashes and rain | Swimming, showering, bathing, diving |
| 5 bar | Swimming, yachting, showering | Bathing, shallow diving, scuba diving |
| 10 bar | Swimming, yachting, showering, bathing, shallow diving | Scuba diving |
| 15 bar | Swimming, yachting, showering, bathing, shallow diving | Scuba diving |
| 20 bar | Swimming, yachting, showering, bathing, shallow diving | Scuba diving |
A higher number does not turn an everyday chronograph into a diving instrument. Seiko’s chart separates everyday ratings from its Diver’s Watch line, so a 10, 15, or 20 bar figure on a dress or sport chronograph should be read as a splash-and-swim allowance, not an approval for scuba use.

Bar is a test rating, not a depth limit
Bar figures come from pressure testing. Seiko’s manual states that the test pressure should not be treated as equal to a real diving depth, because swimming movements can raise the pressure a watch experiences at a given depth. Treat a 5 bar watch as suitable for swimming in the activities listed, not as rated to 50 metres of static depth in practice.
Controls: keep the crown and pushers closed in water
The biggest practical risk to a chronograph in water is operating it while wet. Seiko’s manual warns against pressing buttons or turning or pulling the crown while the watch is wet or submerged, and that warning includes the chronograph pushers. Use this sequence before any water use:
- Check the case-back marking against the table above.
- Push the crown fully in and confirm it is seated.
- Do not press the chronograph pushers or adjust the crown until the watch is completely dry.
- Start, stop, or reset the chronograph only after you have dried the watch and wiped the case, crown, and pushers.
Model examples are not rules for the whole line
Seiko’s US product pages list specific ratings for individual references. The SSB479 is listed as a quartz chronograph with 5 bar water resistance, and the SSB427 as a quartz chronograph with 10 bar water resistance, based on those pages as checked in 2026. These two examples show why you must check your own reference. They do not establish ratings for all Seiko chronographs or for watches sold under related collection names, and specifications and availability can differ by market and change over time.

Seiko states that a watch’s water resistance is not permanently guaranteed. The rating assumes the seals and case are in original condition, so it can be reduced by:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Aged gaskets, which lose elasticity with time and wear.
- Deformation after an accidental knock or impact.
- Opening of the case or crown by someone other than an authorized service centre, where the seals were not restored.
- A service history that is unknown, particularly on an older or secondhand watch.
If any of these apply, have the watch inspected by an authorized Seiko dealer or service centre before relying on its rating in water.
Care after water exposure
Seiko recommends wiping off moisture, sweat, or dirt, and rinsing the watch after exposure to seawater. Its current water-resistance FAQ advises rinsing in still fresh water rather than under running water, and warns against washing the watch while the crown is pulled out. Dry the case thoroughly afterward, because salt residue left in the case-back and crown area is a common source of corrosion.
The manual for the 6M15 caliber family recommends having an authorized Seiko dealer or service centre check the watch every two to three years, covering the case, buttons, crown, gasket, and crystal seal. That interval comes from this manual and is not a universal schedule for every Seiko model.
Scuba diving
For scuba diving, use a model that Seiko markets as a Diver’s Watch and follow that model’s instructions. Everyday chronographs with 3 to 20 bar markings are not established for scuba use by Seiko’s published activity table, regardless of how high the bar number is.
Seiko’s own wording on water resistance is the standard to follow. Where a manual, the case back, and a general chart disagree for your watch, follow the manual and the case back, and consult an authorized service centre when in doubt.
